f The Twelve Apostles Lesson 8 Study Notes Philip: The Apostle Who Was Slow-Witted Simon the Canaanite: The Apostle Who Was A Revolutionist Text: John 1:43-45. John 1:43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Introduction: Philip is always listed as the fifth person in the list of the Apostles. While he may have not been as prominent as the first four men listed; nevertheless, he seems to be the head of the second grouping of the disciples. We must remember that God is of no respecter of persons so, Philip is not to be considered to be of less importance. Although Philip is mentioned in the four complete lists of the twelve (Matt. 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:14; Acts 1:13), it is interesting to observe that John is the only writer to tell us all that is to be said about Philip, yet he is the only one out of the four evangelists who does not quote the list. The first three evangelists give us his name and acquaint us with the fact that he was an apostle, but John loses sight of the dignity of the office that Philip filled and gives us a profile of the man himself with his own individualities and peculiarities. -

Chapter 1 The Earliest Magdalene: Varied Portrayals in Early Gospel Narratives Edmondo Lupieri In the early writings produced by the followers of Jesus, Mary Magdalene is connected with key events in the narrative regarding Jesus: his death on the cross, his burial, and his resurrection.1 At first sight, her figure seems to grow in importance through time. Her name and figure, indeed, are completely ab- sent from the oldest extant texts written by a follower of Jesus, the authentic letters of Paul.2 This is particularly striking, since 1 Cor 15:5–8 contains the ear- liest known series of witnesses to the resurrection, but only men are named specifically.3 1 All translations are the author’s. The Greek text of the New Testament is from Eberhard Nestle et al., eds., Novum Testamentum Graece, 27th ed. (Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1993). 2 This phenomenon seems to parallel the minimal importance of the mother of Jesus in Paul’s letters. Besides using her existence to reaffirm the humanity (and Jewishness) of Jesus (for a similar use of a similar expression to describe the humanity of John the Baptist, see Luke 7:28 / Matt 11:11), Paul does not seem to care about who that “woman” was. The only married disciple, at least esus went up on a mountainside according to what we know from the Gospels. His mother-in-law and called to him those he wanted, was healed by Jesus (Mark 1:30). At Caesarea Philippi (Matthew J 16:13ff), Jesus gave Simon the name Peter, which means “Rock.” and they came to him. Simon the Zealot
Simon the Zealot Simon Zelotes, the eleventh apostle, was chosen by Simon Peter. He was an able man of good ancestry and lived with his family at Capernaum. He was twenty-eight years old when he became attached to the apostles. He was a fiery agitator and was also a man who spoke much without thinking. He had been a merchant in Capernaum before he turned his entire attention to the patriotic organization of the Zealots. Simon Zelotes was given charge of the diversions and relaxation of the apostolic group, and he was a very efficient organizer of the play life and recreational activities of the twelve. Simon's strength was his inspirational loyalty. When the apostles found a man or woman who floundered in indecision about entering the kingdom, they would send for Simon. It usually required only about fifteen minutes for this enthusiastic advocate of salvation through faith in God to settle all doubts and remove all indecision, to see a new soul born into the "liberty of faith and the joy of salvation." Simon's great weakness was his material-mindedness. He could not quickly change himself from a Jewish nationalist to a spiritually minded internationalist. Four years was too short a time in which to make such an intellectual and emotional transformation, but Jesus was always patient with him. The one thing about Jesus which Simon so much admired was the Master's calmness, his assurance, poise, and inexplicable composure. Although Simon was a rabid revolutionist, a fearless firebrand of agitation, he gradually subdued his fiery nature until he became a powerful and effective preacher of "Peace on earth and good will among men." Simon was a great debater; he did like to argue. -

When he was in Bethany reclining at table in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of perfumed oil, costly genuine spikenard. She broke the alabaster jar and poured it on his head. There were some who were indignant. C. “Why has there been this waste of perfumed oil? It is a time to remember the suffering, death, and burial in preparation for the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As we approach and journey through Lent, let us focus on the women who were present when Jesus was crucified on Calvary and later at His tomb. Let us begin with prayer : Lord Jesus Christ, be with us as we study Your Word, meditating upon those women who were near You at the cross and the tomb. In Your holy name. Amen. Standing Near the Cross – read John 19:25-27 • Four women are mentioned: o Mary, the mother of Jesus o His mother’s sister – tradition holds this is Salome, mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee o Mary, the wife of Clopas – the only time she or Clopas are mentioned o Mary Magdalene The women took a risk by being present at the cross. It took courage for them to stand there in the midst of the hatred and ridicule. Their attendance was intended to encourage Jesus. Jesus’ mother, Mary, is experiencing what Simeon had predicted years before in Luke 2:35. As she stood there, her grief must have been nearly unbelievable. -

“The Twelve Disciples” Sermon # 10 The Final Three – the “lesser lights” James the Less: Simon the Zealot and Judas-the Apostle with Three Names In the story of the creation we read that God created the sun and the moon as two great lights; the sun to rule by day and the moon to rule by night. He made the stars as lesser lights. As among the heavenly bodies there are greater and lesser lights so among the men who made up the Apostles there is also such a distinction. [Herbert Lockyer. All the Apostles of the Bible. (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1972) pp. 167-168] The disciples did not all share the spotlight to the same extent. There were those disciples who great lights, like Peter, James and John and there were those disciples who we do not know very much about. Perhaps the final three disciples –the “lesser lights” should be more encouraging to us than those apostles that to us look like super saints. These “lesser” known apostles were just as important as the others and from them we can learn some valuable lessons. This is important because behind the scenes in any church there are always unsung heroes … people who serve quietly, without public acclaim, doing things that are essential to the health and growth of the church. The truth of the matter is that the majority of Christians must be ready to serve God in this way...anonymously...with little or no accolades because there are not many spotlights for Christian heroes on this side of eternity. -
A New Perspective on John the Baptist's Failure to Support Jesus
A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON JOHN THE BAPTIST'S FAILURE TO SUPPORT JESUS Laurent Guymot At the heart of all dialogues between Christians and Jews there is, inevitably, the question of the Messiah: "Are you he who is to come, or shall we wait for another?" —Jürgen Moltmann pplied to the New Testament, some of the tasks of the historical- critical method are to separate layers of redaction work in the Gospels, to Adetermine the oldest strata of tradition, and to present the most probably authentic words of Jesus and the events of his life. Conservative evangelical Christians are generally hostile to such an approach and insist that the complete New Testament is inspired and historically true. One possible meeting point between conservatives and historically-minded liberals which has gained some recent support is, to assert that since Christianity is founded on the resurrected Jesus, it need not be threatened by historical inquiry into Jesus' earthly ministry. One reason is sufficient, in my eyes, to justify the historical-critical method as part of Unificationist studies. Unificationism claims to rely not only on revelation but also on science, and it cannot be denied that archeology and critical exegesis, the basic tools of historical research, are scientific in nature. Beyond the polemic that they generate, most scholars involved in the "quest Laurent Guyénot graduated from the Unification Theological Seminary in 1990. He is presently director of Editions Exergue, a French publishing company. He is the author of three books, one of which, Le roi sans prophète (The King without Prophet) is about the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist.
