4/16/2019 Proposal for an Undergraduate Major in Esports and Game Studies B.S. Arts and Sciences PRELMINARY PROPOSAL FOR A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN Esports and Game Studies I. Proposed Major This new major will be a Bachelor of Science degree through the College of Arts and Sciences in Esports and Game Studies (EGS). Initially, the major will focus on three tracks: 1.) Esports and Game Creation, 2.) Esports Management, and 3.) Application of Games in Medicine and Health. Additional concentrations and certificate programs may be proposed once the major becomes well established. II. Rationale A. Describe the rationale/purpose of the major. This new four-year Arts & Sciences major is a true collaboration between five colleges at The Ohio State University: 1) The College of Arts & Sciences, 2) The Fisher College of Business, 3) The College of Education and Human Ecology, 4) The College of Engineering, and 5) The College of Medicine. This new degree is a multidisciplinary collaboration that is driven by industry needs. The Esports and Game industry is growing at an enormous pace over the past few years. According to Newzoo’s 2018 Global Esports Market Report the global esports revenues have grown over 30% for the past three years and this rate is expected to continue beyond 2021. The revenues in the industry were $250 million in 2015 and expected to reach $1.65 billion by 2021. This growth has created a dearth of properly trained college graduates to fill industry needs. This new UG major has been created to fill the void in industry. -

As transmedia franchises increasingly populate our cultural environment, many questions arise about the effect of the different media involved in the depiction of storyworlds. Through the analysis of different examples, with special emphasis on the particular case of The Walking Dead, and drawing primarily from Henry Jenkins’s concept of “transmedia STORYTELLINGv AND *ENS 3CHRÙTERS CONCEPT OF INTERMEDIALITY THIS PAPER aims to show how different media aesthetics contribute to the process of storytelling and enrich the experience of the consumer. Usually overlooked in other analyses, we argue that these formal and aesthetical characteristics, such as the interactive nature of video games, call for a broader approach that transcends the accustomed search of common narrative aspects. This WILL BE EXEMPLIlED BY A CLOSER COMPARATIVE LOOK AT THE ADVENTURE GAME The Walking Dead: The Game (Telltale Games, 2012) and The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct (Terminal Reality, 2013). The transformations that the different media demand contribute not only to the narrative, but also provide different tools for the construction of storyworlds and different ways to engage with it. NeverDead limb-ers up for February release KONAMI dates original horror-themed title for PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360® SYDNEY, 2 December, 2011: Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH will release its demonic action title NeverDead for PlayStation®3 and Xbox 360® on February 3 rd , 2012, the publisher has confirmed. The brainchild of Shinta Nojiri, and co-developed with Rebellion Software, NeverDead stars an immortal hero called Bryce Boltzmann who, alongside his partner Arcadia, works for an agency tasked with dealing with demonic incursions. As demons from the dawn of time emerge on present-day Earth, so Bryce – armed with an arsenal of guns and a Butterfly-Blade – and the gun-toting Arcadia must locate and destroy the hostile invaders. As the malformed adversaries appear, the heavily-armed Bryce must protect his sidekick and work together to kill them all. However, as the monsters get larger and more vicious, the side-effect of Bryce’s immortality is revealed. For, as the player is attacked by the various miscreants, Bryce can be torn limb from limb, but can simply reattach the parts to his body. Even when all limbs have been removed, Bryce can roll around as a head, looking to reattach his lost parts. He can even use his amputated body parts as weapons, throwing arms into clusters of monsters, and still firing the attached gun, or lobbing his head into seemingly impossible areas, to gain access to new parts of the map. “For NeverDead , we‘ve gone all out to change the approach the player takes in battle,” explained Shinta Nojiri, creator of NeverDead for Konami Digital Entertainment.
