KATIE KARNEHM EDITOR JER NELSEN SARA SCHEUNEMANN HOLLY WILLMAN JWHC STUDENTS Published Summer 2012 2 INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY JOHN WESLEY HONORS COLLEGE A NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Thanks in large part to research conducted at UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute, a growing number of stakeholders in higher education are pondering how greater attention to spirituality might foster a more meaningful and holistic education for college students. This past May, the John Wesley Honors College hosted a national research symposium on “spirituality and holistic learning in collegiate honors education.” The symposium was part of an ongoing book project for the National Collegiate Honors Council that is exploring how research and the developing national dialogue on spirituality in higher education might relate to the efforts of honors programs to educate academic high achievers. The participants in the symposium hailed from a diverse range of academic communities, from public and private non-sectarian campuses to universities sponsored by the Jesuit, Franciscan, Baptist, Pentecostal, Reformed and Wesleyan Methodist traditions. As I listened to the various presenters reflect on how their schools integrate spirituality into the learning experiences of their honors students, I was struck by two things. Firstly, I was reminded of how blessed we are in the JWHC to have the freedom and resources necessary to cultivate a community of academic excellence that embraces the fullness of human development: intellectual, moral, spiritual, interpersonal and vocational. Secondly, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the increasing opportunities the Lord is giving us to share with the broader academy how a rigorous, holistic, liberal education forged in the historic Christian tradition can prepare students for meaningful lives of virtue and accomplishment. I hope and pray both that educators’ dissatisfaction with the reductionist nature of American higher learning will continue to grow in the years ahead and that we will have many more opportunities to embody and share the essence of the JWHC’s motto: “the glory of God is a human fully alive.” In this second issue of the Aldersgate Review, we are delighted to share with you some of the ways that the “glory of God” has been manifested in and through our learning community (of faculty, students and alumni) during the 2011-2012 academic year. It is particularly rewarding — and a sign of the vitality of the JWHC’s educational ministry — to see more than thirty JWHC student and faculty authors contributing to the richness of this issue. We are once again indebted to Katie Karnehm (JWHC alumna and assistant professor of English at IWU) and Sara Scheunemann (JWHC program coordinator) for the tireless editorial work they devoted to integrating the work of so many contributors into the final publication.     Panorama Preparing for Switchfoot & Anberlin SWOSU Concert 09.18.2007 Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s Panorama Committee has planned a major outdoor concert for Thursday, October 4, on the Weatherford campus. Bands Switchfoot and Anberlin, both popular bands among college/high school students and young adults, will be featured at the 7:30 p.m. concert at Milam Stadium on the SWOSU campus. Committee member Kevin Bartel, who is director of the SWOSU Fine Arts Center/ Conference Center, has been working with a professional production company to provide stage, lighting and video components equal to events that occur at major concert venues. “We are working to make this a special night for everyone,” Bartel said. “The Panorama Committee wanted to provide a quality setting for this event.” Ticket sales have been going very good, according to SWOSU Panorama Committee Chair Brian Adler. Advance tickets are $20 for SWOSU students and $25 for non- SWOSU students. Advance tickets for groups of 15 or more are $20. All tickets at the door will be $30. Tickets are available at the SWOSU Public Relations & Marketing Office, Room 205 of the Administration Building, and at the SWOSU Business Office, Room 109 of the Administration Building, both on the Weatherford campus. Switchfoot of San Diego, Calif., is an alternative rock band known for its energetic live shows that bring together secular and Christian rock audiences. An understanding of the core principles of cross-over songs and their relevance in contemporary culture is essential for Christian songwriters. Six albums marked by spiritual overtones or undertones, representing a broad spectrum of contemporary cross-over music, were examined. Selected songs were critiqued by analyzing the album of origin, lyrical content, author’s expressed worldview, and level of commercial success. Renaissance art also provided a historical parallel to modern day songwriting. Recommendations were developed for Christian songwriters to craft songs with greater effectiveness to impact the culture while adhering to a biblical worldview. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

Due to the genre’s flexible nature, many Christian artists over the years have used vague imagery and secular lyrical content to find favor among mainstream outlets. This study examined the most recent ten-year period of CCM to determine its ability to cross over into the mainstream music scene, while also assessing the impact of its lyrical content and genre on the probability of reaching such mainstream success. For the years 2008-2018, Billboard data were collected for every Christian song on the Hot 100, Hot Rock Songs, or Hot Country Songs in order to detect any noticeable trend regarding the rise or fall of CCM; each song then was coded for theological language. No obvious trend emerged regarding the mainstream success of CCM as a whole, but the genre of Rock was found to possess the greatest degree of mainstream success. Rock also, however, was shown to have a very low tolerance for theological language, contrasted with the high tolerance of Country.
