Students will learn how to apply science, mathematical methods, and empirical evidence to the innovation, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of different manufacturing systems. The Manufacturing Career Cluster® focuses on planning, managing, and performing the processing of materials into intermediate or final products and r elated professional and technical support activities such as production planning and control, maintenance, and manufacturing/process engineering. Successful completion of the Engineering program of study will fulfill requirements of the Business and Industry or STEM Endorsement. Course Sequence: 9th Grade ~ Principles of Applied Engineering 10th Grade ~ Manufacturing Engineering Technology I 11th ~ Engineering Design and Development (PLTW) 12th ~ Practicum in STEM INDUSTRY CERTIFICATION – ACU - Autodesk Certified User ~ CSWA – Certified SolidWorks Associate ~ NCCER Geographic Information Systems (GIS) The Information Technology Support and Services program of study explores the occupations and educational opportunities associated with administering, testing, and implementing computer databases and applying knowledge of database management systems. Under the Information Technology and Support Services, GIS is an applied pathway for students who have already mastered basic computer skills and wish to apply those skills in novel contexts with the use of geographic information systems and geospatial technologies. Upon completion of this pathway, students will develop the ability to reason spatially and analyze relationships among concepts; to capture, store, validate, integrate, analyze, and display data related to locations on the Earth; and to create, query, maintain, and modify geospatial datasets. Students will learn how GIS is used as a decision-making and data management tool to solve problems in various industries and fields. Furthermore, students will use GIS software to create a spatially accurate map with data retrieved from online or locally available resources. Successful completion of this Information Technology Support and Services program of study will fulfill requirements of a Business and Industry Endorsement Course Sequence: 9th Grade ~ Geographic Information Systems 10th Grade ~ Raster Based GIS 11th ~ Spatial Technology and Remote Sensing 12th ~ Practicum of Information Technology Graphic Design and Multimedia Arts The Arts, A/V Technology and Communications (AAVTC) Career Cluster® focuses on careers in designing, producing, exhibiting, performing, writing, and publishing multimedia content including visual and performing arts and design, journalism, and entertainment services. Careers in the AAVTC Career Cluster require a creative aptitude, a strong background in computer and technology applications, a strong academic foundation, and a proficiency in oral and written communication. Successful completion of the Graphic Design & Multimedia Arts program of study will fulfill requirements of a Business and Industry Endorsement. • School Board Members FROM: Terry B.Grier, Ed.D
MEMORANDUM January 23, 2015 TO: School Board Members FROM: Terry B.Grier, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools SUBJECT: VANGUARD PROGRAM: 2013–2014 CONTACT: Carla Stevens, 713-556-6700 According to Section 29.123 of the Texas Education Code, the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students (G/T) forms the basis of program accountability for state- mandated services for G/T students. In the Houston Independent School District, G/T students were served through one of two program designs: Board-approved Vanguard/Magnet or Vanguard Neighborhood. Attached is the evaluation report summarizing the effectiveness of the Vanguard Program during the 2013–2014 school year. The state plan outlines three different performance measures that may be viewed as a continuum: In Compliance, Recommended, and Exemplary. There are five components that are addressed in the plan: Student Assessment, Program Design, Curriculum and Instruction, Professional Development, and Family-Community Involvement. In 2007–2008, HISD implemented fourteen Vanguard Standards that were aligned to the five components of the Texas State Plan. The evaluation report centered on measuring the effectiveness of the Vanguard Program based on the state’s five components and comparing year eight of implementation of the Vanguard Standards with baseline data from 2006–2007. The Vanguard program supports the district’s strategic direction by supporting initiatives 1 and 3 by having an effective teacher in every classroom and rigorous instructional standards and supports. In 2013–2014, a total of 32,906 students attending 259 elementary, middle, and high schools participated in the district's Vanguard Program, reflecting 16.9 percent of the district K–12 population, representing a slight decrease from 17.0 percent in 2012–2013.
