Jeremiah Chapter 38 Verses 1-6: Jeremiah was preaching surrender as the only way the people could survive the Babylonian onslaught. Believing he was weakening the war effort with his message, Judah’s military officers sought to put Jeremiah to death by throwing him into and abandoned cistern (see verse 6). Zedekiah again lacked the courage to act on the prophet’s behalf. Jeremiah 38:1 "Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying," Of these two people we nowhere else read about. Some think that Pashur, whose son Gedaliah was, is the same as is mentioned in (Jer. 20:1). Which is not likely, since he was a priest, and this son was a prince. "And Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah": These had been sent by the king to Jeremiah, to inquire of the Lord, and to pray for him and his people (Jer. 21:1). All four were princes, prime ministers of state, were of great power and authority. And to whom the king could deny nothing, or withstand (Jer. 38:4); these, "Heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people": That is, to as many of them as came to the court of the prison to visit him. Some out of good will and some out of ill will; and others just out of curiosity. Craving to know by the prophet how things would go with them. -

His preaching became extremely polarizing. These political factions could be categorized along a spectrum of support and hatred toward the prophet. Jeremiah’s imprisonment (Jeremiah 38) illustrates some of the various attitudes toward God’s emissary. This scene also demonstrates the political climate and spiritual atmosphere of Jerusalem at the verge of its collapse into the Babylonian exile and also gives insights into the beginning narrative of the Book of Mormon. Biblical Prophecy, the Prophet Jeremiah and His Book In this short article, I will deal with a simple matter, namely, who wrote the book of Jeremiah, one of the major prophetic books in the Bible. As is often the case, such a straightforward question has quite an intricate answer. However, before proceeding, given the specificity of the topic (many, I am sure, will be familiar with the Bible as a collection of books, but fewer might be acquainted with the minutiae of the prophet Jeremiah and the book named after him), some introductory notes are necessary. Counting fifty-two chapters, the book of Jeremiah is the longest book ascribed by the biblical tradition to one of the so-called ‘writing prophets’.1 Traditionally, Jeremiah bears the title of ‘prophet’ (in Hebrew, nāvi), and Prophets (Hebrew, Nevi’im) is also the title for that part of the Bible that goes from the book of Joshua to that of Malachi. As a prophet, Jeremiah acts as a mediator between the divine and the humane spheres,2 and, although Hebrew prophets are sometimes involved in the prediction of future things, they are not merely foretellers. -

INTRODUCTION Many attempting to make sense of prophetic literature in the Hebrew Bible would echo Carroll's assessment that "[t]o the modern reader the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel are virtually incomprehensible as books."1 For Carroll, the problem with reading these books as "books" is that there is a confusing mixture of prose and poetry, a lack of coherent order and arrange ment, and a shortage of necessary contextual information needed for accu rate interpretation.2 Despite the difficult compositional and historical issues associated with the book of Jeremiah, there is a growing consensus that -

This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case. -

Title 'Expanding the History of the Just
Title ‘Expanding the History of the Just War: The Ethics of War in Ancient Egypt.’ Abstract This article expands our understanding of the historical development of just war thought by offering the first detailed analysis of the ethics of war in ancient Egypt. It revises the standard history of the just war tradition by demonstrating that just war thought developed beyond the boundaries of Europe and existed many centuries earlier than the advent of Christianity or even the emergence of Greco-Roman thought on the relationship between war and justice. It also suggests that the creation of a prepotent ius ad bellum doctrine in ancient Egypt, based on universal and absolutist claims to justice, hindered the development of ius in bello norms in Egyptian warfare. It is posited that this development prefigures similar developments in certain later Western and Near Eastern doctrines of just war and holy war. Identifying military engagements in Egypt and the Levant, 1915- 1918 Roslyn Shepherd King Pike* Independent Scholar Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT This article examines the official names listed in the 'Egypt and Palestine' section of the 1922 report by the British Army’s Battles Nomenclature Committee and compares them with descriptions of military engagements in the Official History to establish if they clearly identify the events. The Committee’s application of their own definitions and guidelines during the process of naming these conflicts is evaluated together with examples of more recent usages in selected secondary sources. The articles concludes that the Committee’s failure to accurately identify the events of this campaign have had a negative impacted on subsequent historiography. Introduction While the perennial rose would still smell the same if called a lily, any discussion of military engagements relies on accurate and generally agreed on enduring names, so historians, veterans, and the wider community, can talk with some degree of confidence about particular events, and they can be meaningfully written into history. -

1 The Potter and the Clay By George Whitefield Sermon 13 Jeremiah 18:1–6 — “The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make [it]. Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay [is] in the potter's hand, so [are] ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.” At sundry times, and in diverse manners, God was pleased to speak to our fathers by the prophets, before he spoke to us in these last days by his Son. To Elijah, he revealed himself by a small still voice. To Jacob, by a dream. To Moses, he spoke face to face. Sometimes he was pleased to send a favorite prophet on some especial errand; and whilst he was thus employed, vouchsafed to give him a particular message, which he was ordered to deliver without reserve to all the inhabitants of the land. A very instructive instance of this kind we have recorded in the passage now read to you. The first verse informs us that it was a word, or message, which came immediately from the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah. -
