The Department-both the Teachers & students are actively involved in various activities conducted by the N.C.C., N.S.S. and also by other Associations in the College. The Department has adopted a two-way approach of achieving better performance and academic excellence- the Teachers are associated with and participating in various activities like Seminars, Workshops, Conferences and meetings of Mangalore University Economics Association about academic matters including syllabus review; and the knowledge and experience so gained is used by them to impart knowledge in a better manner to the students. Therefore the students are guided and encouraged to involve themselves in writing Assignments, presenting Seminars, participating in Inter- Class (also Inter-Collegiate) Academic Exchange Programmes, Field study based- research oriented Project work and such other activities, besides the regular class room functions. Faculty- Dr RadhakrishnaBhat M & MrPurushothamaK.V Presenting Papers in the National Conference-Tumkur University, Tumkur

III STUDENT ACTIVITIES 1. General Class Room Teaching Before the commencement of the Academic Year, a Departmental Meeting was held (03.07.2010); both the Faculty Members participated in the Meeting and the workload/syllabus was distributed among the two Faculty Members-Dr. RadhakrishnaBhat M and Mr. Purushothama K.V. On the basis of this division and according to the Time Table regular class schedules were arranged. Mangalore University gives the syllabus. In the Class room teaching, the medium of instruction is basically English; but Kannada language is also used extensively. (Kannada is the State Language, University encourages it and the learners find it easy to study the subject in the language of their choice.) The traditional methods of ‗chalk & talk‘, dialogue/discussion, interactive sessions, use of library resources, coupled with the modern methods of the extensive use of Computer/Internet generated material and the effective and innovative implementation of the programmes of Additional Academic Activities (Seminars, Assignments, Interclass academic exchange programmes, Field Visits/Research, Guest Lectures etc.)-all these methods were used in the class to impart knowledge. The class room teaching was basically ‗learner-centered‘; care was taken to cater to the academic needs of all types of students (Slow learners, Average learners, Advanced learners).

2. ICT Oriented Teaching-Learning Process The department is consistently and continuously making efforts to use ICT-oriented teaching-learning methods. Both the Faculty and the students make wider use of computer-generated study resources.  Faculty members download reference inputs from INTERNET and use the same for their class-room preparation. Both the Faculty members have their own personal computers with INTERNET facility, in addition to the one provided by the college and they use the same for updating their academic needs.  Students also download study material from INTERNET and use the same for their class- room preparation.  INTERNET-generated reference material is also used for the Additional Academic Activities of the students.  Faculty members use ‗Power Point‘ Presentations in their class room teaching and in other academic activities.  Students also use ‗Power Point‘ Presentations in their Class seminars and Inter Class Academic Exchange Programmes.  The Department takes special interest in encouraging the students to be the beneficiaries of ICT oriented teaching-learning process; they are asked to use INTERNET widely, use computer-generated techniques regularly, open E-mail ID and keep in touch one with other by using the same and thus update themselves in all these ‗modern necessities‘  The Department is trying to update itself by familiarizing with the ‗Catalyst‘ Software; which is used by the college office for its own ‗computerization.‘ Much of student-related data can be updated and perfected by using the same.  The Department, while arranging programmes by inviting external resource persons; either on its own or in association with other bodies in the college, also emphasizes the use of ICT methods. 3. Tests & Academic Performance i. Bridge Course Test The Department of Economics has conducted the Bridge Course Tests as follows: Sl No Date Duration Class Max Marks 1 21.06.2012 One Hour I B.A. 50 2 21.06.2012 One Hour I B.C. 50 3 25.06.2012 One Hour I B.C.-B 50 4 26.06.2012 One Hour I BBM 50 The Bridge Course Tests were conducted when the students just entered a new class. The main purpose was to judge the existing academic knowledge of the new entrants, to understand their ‗knowledge gap‘ and to plan for the remedial measures; so that ‗right academic inputs can be given to the right learners at right time.‘ ii. Class Tests Class Tests were required to assess the ability of students to grasp the teaching of the subject in the class and to observe their updates. These tests were in the usual traditional method; i.e. a one-hour test in the regular class with a short notice to the students and with limited portion. Even regular question- answer sessions were conducted in the classes which were treated as oral tests. Open book tests were also conducted to evaluate the ability of the students to trace answers from among various text and note books. The Department maintains a record of the important class tests conducted and the marks obtained by the students. iii. Internal Assessment Examinations As per the University Examination rules for every subject the students will score 20/30 marks on the basis of their performance in the Internal Assessment Examinations and the remaining 80/120 marks

4. Additional Academic Activities i. Class Seminars Conducting Class Seminars by the students for the benefit of the students is a significant Additional Academic Activity and the Department gives maximum importance to this. Students make use of Computer-based methods to present these Seminars. They go browsing; collect INTERNET generated reference material to prepare their seminar papers and opt for Power Point Presentations. The important Seminars are as follows: Jesmin Vilma Lasrado, III B.A. participated in the NHRC Sponsored National seminar on ―Human Rights, Indian Constitution & Globalisation and presented a paper on Human Rights and socio-economic Development at Govt.First Grade College, Haleyangadi, on 01.02.2013 and won First Prize.

ii. Class Assignments Another important Additional Academic Activity practiced in the Department is asking and guiding the students to write Assignments on certain specific topics which appear in their syllabus. Topics are announced; individual students/group of students from each class are selected, details of reference material are explained, even Internet sites are given and the students are asked to write and produce Assignments, (In this year, in order to encourage e-learning among the students in a rural college like ours, our Department initiated the process on online submission of some assignments; MrPurushothama K.V. asked all the students of VI Sem B.A. to compulsorily open their e-mail IDs and submit their Assignments through such IDs only). They were also asked to use ICT oriented learning system; they are valued, marks/grades are given to the students. The details are as follows:

iii. Inter Class/Inter-Collegiate Academic Exchange Programmes

Inter Class Academic Exchange Programme is a significant innovative idea practiced in the Department. The students of one class prepare a seminar paper on a subject required in another class; go there as guest speakers and present their papers, generally using Power Point + Chalk and Talk methods. Both the ‗learners‘ and the ‗teachers‘ enjoy these sessions; because this gives them new exposure, provides opportunities and encourages even others to opt for this kind of exercises. The details are:

Jesmin Vilma Lasrado, III B.A presented a Paper on Agricultural Marketing at St Mary‟s College Shirva on 02.02.2013 in a Seminar organized under the Inter-Collegiate Academic Exchange Programme of Departments of Economics of Pompei College Aikala and St Mary‟s College Shirva.)

Ms JYOTHI III B.A presented a Paper on Government steps to improve Agricultural Marketing in India at St Mary‟s College Shirva on 02.02.2013 in a Seminar organized under the Inter-Collegiate Academic Exchange Programme of Departments of Economics of Pompei College Aikala and St Mary‟s College Shirva.)

Mr Ashwin, III B.A. & Mr Prashanth, III B.A. –both students from St Mary‘s College Shirva were invited to our Department; they presented Paper on Globalization and Indian Agriculture on 04.02.2013; this programme was under Inter-Collegiate Student Exchange Programme.

iv. Field Visits/Research Based Activities

In order to expose the students to the real society in which they live, to encourage the research culture and to facilitate them to get the first-hand information and also to widen the scope of ‘experiential learning’, the Department of Economics arranges and coordinates certain Field Visits and Research based Activities.

To make this activity more meaningful, we do the following:  Orientation is given to the students about this activity  Project Plan is prepared in consultation of the participating students  Methodology is explained to the students  Questionnaire is carefully prepared  Student-groups are selected; specific work is assigned to them  Internet-generated sources and computer work is compulsorily made a part of the Project.  Project Reports are to be prepared and produced v. Any Other Activity The Department is striving hard- both inside the class formally and outside informally to create social awareness and self confidence among the students. Regular and continuous academic interactions with the students are conducted. A system of display of paper clippings related to the subject is arranged and the students are encouraged to involve themselves in these activities. Since the Faculty members of the Department are a part of many of the important activities and programmes of the College, they invite and encourage the students to participate in different activities and thus enrich themselves. 5. Remedial Teaching There are two types of Remedial Teaching practiced in the Department:  U.G.C. Assisted Remedial Coaching Classes to the students belonging to Minority Community  Remedial Teaching to the Slow Learners/Advanced Learners/Common Follow-up Action The College gets financial assistance under the Scheme of U.G.C.
