Simon and Garfunkel Just before Christmas, in the ice and snow, we had to have a new heating boiler. The difference it‟s made is unbelievable, the house is so much warmer. That‟s the good news. The bad news is, had this been done last year, the government‟s „Scrapage Scheme‟ would have virtually paid the bill. Things change! We have a massive national debt and a new government who are intent on paying it off, whatever we feel about their Revd. Bob Politt methods. In the 60‟s I remember the paranoia about the Cold War with the Communist Block nations: the „Russians are coming‟, was in all our minds. James Bond films gave us great reassurance that so long as Sean Connery was around we‟d all be okay. Now, we are told that a Russian government owned oil company has made a £10bn deal with
BP, whose offices are in the heart of London! Not to mention, so I wont (oh, go on…), the two shillings and eleven pence I can remember paying for a gallon of petrol, that is 15p in today‟s money. Gosh, have I got that right? And then there were the free grants for students, not to mention the… STOP! How times have changes. And that‟s where Simon and Garfunkel come in. I was listening to their version of „Turn, turn, turn‟ - you can listen on the internet—and it‟s words: “To everything there is a season, a time to be born and a time to die, a time to reap and a time to sow, a time to laugh and a time to weep…” The words come from Ecclesiastes, a book in the Old Testament, written by King Solomon the Wise, observing how life changes, and so quickly. For many people, parents, students, employees, managers, the sick, the elderly, these are worrying times and we are facing massive changes within our society which we‟re finding hard to grasp. As Jeremiah looked at the destroyed city of Jerusalem in BC 575 he wrote these words: “Lord, your love comes new every morning.” Jesus reaffirmed this when he said: “I will never leave you or forsake you…I will be with you to the very end of the age.” Whatever happens to us God‟s love never ceases. This doesn‟t mean that life is easy but knowing that someone who loves you is with you, can make all the difference. It‟s amazing how we can be strengthened to face the challenges we meet in our daily lives. Christian greetings, Page 3
New Oak Gates for St Leonard‟s Churchyard As many people will know, the churchyard at St Leonard‟s is almost full and the Parish Council have purchased land for a new burial ground adjoining the existing churchyard. In order to allow access to the new burial ground from the church, it is planned to erect two 3 foot oak gates mounted on oak posts. The cost will be in the region of £1,800. It has been suggested that somebody may like to donate these in memory of a loved one with a simple inscription carved into the gates. Update on St. Leonard’s Church Proposed Extension Many of you have been asking ―what is happening with the proposed church extension?‖ While there has been little visual activity, much work has been done behind the scenes, some of it two steps forward, one step back. This has been the case with our pre-planning proposal to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, which our architect recently submitted. The Council expressed reservations about our proposal to use an oak framed building, an internal staircase and the plan to abut the extension directly on to the west wall of the church. In order to meet these objections, the PCC asked our architect to redesign the extension to take these concerns into account.
Our architect felt the best way forward was to redesign the entire extension and he has, in fact, come up with a brilliant design showing a single story stone building with a glazed link to the west wall of the church. This new plan, which basically has the same type of internal space and facilities as the previous one, has been approved by the PCC and submitted to the Council, from whom we are expecting a reaction very shortly. Once we have this, we can go forward and extend our fund raising. The new proposal will cost in the region of £210,000, almost half of which we have already raised. As soon as we get preliminary consent from Basingstoke and Deane Council that they are likely to approve the new plans, we will publish them and display them at St. Leonard’s Church.
Please continue to pray for our extension, which is designed to bring toilets and much needed facilities to the church. Don’t forget Richard Elphick’s £10 talent scheme (call him on 01256 882860). Here’s a suggestion - buy £10 of plug plants and bring them on to sell at Percy’s Plant Sale in May. You would be surprised how much they will make.
Also, we hope you will consider generously sponsoring our Rector Bob and his wife Rody who, together with Veronica Upton, will be walking the final leg of the Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in April to raise money for this project. More news on this to come. Donald Dawson

Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council New Councillor At the last meeting, members co-opted John Darker to replace Lucy Marshall on the parish council. A warm welcome is extended to John and we hope he will find the work both interesting and rewarding. John’s contact details may be found on the parish council website www.sherfieldonlodon-pc.gov.uk. Thanks are also due to the other two candidates who put themselves forward for this post . New Tree Warden Members welcomed another new member to the team – Jane Jordan, who has replaced Geraldine House-Barklie as the parish tree warden. Jane’s contact details may also be found on the website. The role of the tree warden is primarily one of education and promoting an interest in trees by supporting and getting involved in tree planting schemes. However, the warden is unable to intervene in areas of dispute. Council Tax 2011/12 The parish council has now fixed its level of precept for the coming financial year – this is the amount that is levied on parishioners to enable the parish council to provide its services. It has been necessary to increase this owing to some unexpected expenditure in the current year, one of these items being the costs involved in removing the unauthorised encampment on the village green and the subsequent clear-up. As a result of this, the charge for a Band D property will be approximately £44.08 per annum, up from £39.18 per annum in the current year. The increases for the other bands will vary and these can be provided upon request. The charge will be included in your overall council tax bill which will also give a breakdown of the amounts charged by the various authorities. Collating the Loddon Valley Link The magazine is put together in the Sherfield Village Hall on the last Thursday of the month. A team of around 24 volunteers gather into four lines to assemble 1,400 copies. We start at around 1.30 pm and have the magazines ready for distribution by 3.00 pm. In order to have sufficient numbers present, we need a pool of around 36 volunteers. This ensures we can have the necessary numbers present to accommodate the housing development at Sherfield Park, who now receive 510 copies. We now have four production lines which could increase to six as the number of magazines increases further. We are looking for more volunteers who are prepared to give a couple of hours every now and again on the last Thursday of the month to help keep the Loddon Valley Link in production. We would love to see more people from Sherfield Park to help with the increasing demands the new development is placing on our resources.
Come and meet new friends, enjoy the social get-together, (tea and biscuits provided) while at the same time making a positive contribution to the community. The Revd John and Mrs Ann Lenton Our Rector, Revd Bob Politt, is now Priest in Charge of Bramley and Revd John Lenton is curate to Bob with responsibility for Bramley. We shall be seeing John from time to time ministering within our Benefice and so the following article, taken from an interview by James Witchalls with John and Ann Lenton for the Bramley Parish Magazine, will be of interest. Could you tell us something about your upbringing? John: My parents were regular churchgoers but only really became committed followers of Christ when I was about 11 years old. They certainly encouraged me in my Christian development, although I did wander off from faith as a teenager until my late 20’s. Ann: My parents were also strong Christians and brought me up to love and serve Christ – again, until my rebellious late teens. John and I were married very young and God graciously brought us both together along the same road back to faith. Before becoming a priest you worked in industry for many years. Could you say something about those years? I graduated from Oxford with a Modern Languages degree, which wasn’t really much use for anything but teaching, which I didn’t want to do. In my last year at Oxford, I started taking an interest in business and actually got a fantastic job as a financial analyst with a big American chemical firm, first in New York and then in Switzerland. They gave me really good training. I was hooked! I went on to do an MBA at Harvard Business School, and from then on worked in financial services of various kinds, finally working as a senior executive for American Express for nearly 15 years. You took early retirement at the age of 50 years in order to serve in full time Christian ministry. What was it that prompted you to do so? Was there a particular moment that you could say led you to this decision? My job at Amex had grown to such an extent that I was travelling and working almost non-stop. I felt that it was pushing out a number of other things on which I set a high value, such as being available to our family, leading a Bible study home group and taking a leadership role in the church. I began praying that God would prepare my heart for doing something altogether different, even if it meant giving up the big
Page 22 salary and bonuses. Over a period of about 18 months, that prayer increasingly got answered, especially when God showed me that I could be content with what I’d got and not have to go on wanting more. Where did you train for ordination and when and where were you ordained deacon? I trained at Oak Hill Theological College for three years: one year full time and the second and third part time, because after my first year, I was already teaching full time in Romania. I was ordained deacon in July 2000 at St Paul’s Cathedral and then ordained priest about 18 months later in our home church of St James, Muswell Hill. What was it that led you to take a particular interest in Romania? When I was casting around for how I could best serve God in my life after Amex, I arranged a meeting with Lord Griffiths, who is a great Christian man, a very senior banker and a good friend. He had just come back from speaking at the Graduation ceremony of a small private college, Emanuel University in Oradea, Romania, which had been set up by a big local church as part of its outreach to the community. Whilst there, the Rector of the college told him that the college was already training pastors, teachers and social workers but that they wanted now to reach out into the marketplace: so they wanted to launch a business school. Business in Romania was, and still is, deeply corrupt – so the aim was to teach excellent business skills, but to do so with firm Christian foundations, so that a new generation of ethical businessmen and women could begin to have an impact on the market. It Ann and John Lenton was an extraordinary experience, one that remains precious in our memories. We love Romania and the Romanians and we stay in touch with many of the students who passed through our hands over the next eleven years, seven of them full-time, four part-time. My main mission was to impart excellent Western business skills to young people, but to integrate the gospel of Christ
Page 23 and His way of life into everything I taught them. Ann: My main missions were to make the campus beautiful and comfortable for students. With the help of a wonderful Christian landscape gardener, we were able to accomplish the first over a period of about 5 years. The second, the comfort of students, is a work in progress! I was asked to take over the cafeteria which had become a byword for inedible food, and by the grace of God, my team and I transformed the cafeteria into a place students loved to come. Our aim was Graduation in Rumania to show God’s love through the way we treated students and the quality of the food we served: and over time, that’s what happened. I look back on that period with great joy and thankfulness. During those years you also served as an honorary curate at St. James’s Church in Muswell Hill, north London. Could you say something about your time there? During the years we were in Romania full time, I was only really able to help at St James at Easter and Christmas and the summer holidays. However, that was of course when extra help was both needed and welcome. But one of the things that persuaded Ann and me to return to London and only to go for one week a month to Romania was the fact that the vicar of St James became quite ill and needed extra support. You have two children as well as grandchildren. Could you say something about them?

Our son, Philip, is Chief Executive of a software company in Alton. He and his wife, Alison, have three lovely sons, all named after Old Testament prophets – Daniel (15), Zachariah (12) and Micah (7)! They are also expecting their fourth child in March this year. Phil is a fine keyboard player; the family attend Harvest Church in Alton. Our daughter, Sophie, has three children: Cathryn (8), Annabel (6) and Sam (3). She is currently working on an Open University degree and hopes thereafter to teach in a secondary school. They are all members of the Butts Church in Alton where Sophie helps with the music, playing guitar and keyboard. What led you and Ann to decide to settle in Bramley? Both our children and their families live in Alton; we have for some time wanted to live nearer to them, but the break-up of our daughter’s marriage (leaving her with three little children) decided us to do something about it. I wrote to the Archdeacon of Winchester enquiring about possibilities; we met and talked for some time; and some months later, he contacted me with the idea of Bramley. Once we had the pleasure of meeting Bob and Rody Politt, and also once we had read the Parish Profile that the PCC had put together, we were completely convinced that this was the place to which God was calling us. We still believe that! Do you have any vision of what you would like to achieve here? We would love to see the church grow and develop in such a way that the Diocese would want to put someone here on a full-time basis when our time is up. That’s our dream and we’ll be praying for it. I believe that God will bring growth to St James if we follow what the Bible teaches us about building a Christian community, committed to prayer and willing to give sacrificially. So with God’s help, that is what we shall aim to try and build up. And finally, how do you feel we as parishioners can best be of service to you? Our hope is that we will serve you! But please be patient with us as we try to learn names and adapt to traditions or practices that are different from our previous experience – and also, perhaps as we begin to introduce a few new ideas that we’ve learned elsewhere which could help us all as a church family. Thrive is a small national charity that uses gardening to change lives. They champion the benefits of gardening, carry out research and offer training and practical solutions so that anyone with a disability can take part in, benefit from and enjoy gardening. Thrive are setting up an exciting new project called Growing 4 Life (G4L) which is being funded by Ecominds. It involves people with direct experience of mental distress in environmental projects that improve their mental and physical health, and local communities. THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Reported by Ilene Iles
Dee Bulpitt, our President, welcomed Members and Visitors to our December/Christmas Meeting and thanked local W.I.’s for their Christmas Cards and invitations to other Christmas Meetings. Jerusalem was sung and the Business Meeting started. Val Denny went through the correspondence and up-coming events and advised those present that we had been invited to the Bramley School Nativity Play on 10th December at 10.30 a.m. She also mentioned our trips to Sleeping Beauty on 10th December, Gyles Brandreth at the Anvil on 9th February and Chichester and Fishbourne on the 12th April. Dee reminded everyone of the Carols at Pamber Place on the 13th December and mentioned that this is probably the last time that this event will take place. Members were also reminded that the January Meeting starts at 12 noon and will begin with Soup and Sandwiches, a Bring and Buy Table and Raffle, followed by the Business Meeting. Those present were warned about several ―scams‖ that are ―going the rounds‖ concerning undelivered parcels, prescriptions and ―cash back‖ on receipts when none was requested. Members were warned to be on their guard. The Business Meeting closed at 2.40 p.m. and was followed by Traditional Christmas Songs sung to us by Mr S Jorden who invited us to join the chorus of one or two. Catherine Wright gave the vote of thanks and a sumptuous tea followed and the Raffle was drawn. Our January Meeting started at 12 noon and the Committee served a choice of 4 soups and a variety of sandwiches followed by a choice of two trifles made by Tess Morris. Members were encouraged to visit the Bring and Buy Tables, buy Raffle tickets and Evelyn Holdaway was available to receive the Members’ annual subscriptions. The Raffle was drawn while everyone was enjoying a cup of tea. Dee then started the Business Meeting. The February Meeting is our Annual Lunch at BCOT on the second Wednesday, not the first, followed by our usual Meeting at approximately 2.30 p.m. NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, 9th FEBRUARY 2011 11.30 A.M. A brief mention of the end of 2010 includes the results of our Telephone Quiz in November. We scored 17 out of 23, plus answered the bonus question correctly, so felt we made a creditable attempt. Only five groups in the country scored full marks! We are inspired to try again this year! Our book evening went well. We all read ‘The L-Shaped Room’ by Lynne Reid Banks, a story about single motherhood at the end of the 50s, which most of us enjoyed. We celebrated Christmas with the Posada figures in residence once more. A delicious spread on beautifully decorated tables started the evening, after which we did a Christmas quiz and followed this with party games and readings.
We have now planned our meetings for 2011. Our theme for the year is ‘Around the World’ which is a very wide one and gives lots of scope. In view of the forthcoming royal wedding, we are looking at how other countries celebrate their weddings. Each member will research the customs and hopefully illustrate their talk at our April meeting. Other ‘world’ topics will include looking at various cities to include population, culture, architecture and geography; looking at world art; and finding out more about Fair- trade and how we balance that with buying commodities from overseas, considering air-miles, for example.
Our country theme is Sweden this year and our Swedish evening will be in February. We won’t be indulging in Swedish massage, but certainly in Swedish food, which has a tendency to be fish, fish, and more fish! There are some yummy puds though! We will also be looking at Swedish customs, businesses, culture and geography with a bit of Abba in the background!

EVERGREEN’S CLUB for the over 60’s Reported by May MacQueen
Our December meeting was our Christmas party. Everyone enjoyed the entertainment by the children from Danes Hill School who played musical instruments and sung carols. The tables were decorated with lovely floral arrangements made by Brenda Monger and after our Christmas buffet these were then raffled for the club funds. We also had our main Christmas raffle with lots of lovely prizes to be won. On December 10th a few of the members went to Bramley School where they enjoyed year 2 performing their Christmas play. December 14th was our Christmas meal at the White Hart, Sherfield on Loddon and was attended by 24 members.
THE LODDON LINK ON SHERFIELD PARK The Loddon Link is distributed to every household on Sherfield Park and now represents over 30% of the total production. The Committee are now looking for additional helpers to assist in the collation and distribution of this popular magazine. Sherfield Park Community Association Update During last year the committee has been busily preparing itself for the task of taking over responsibility for the operations and management of the Community Centre and outside sports activities which is expected to open in early spring of this year. As we move into the New Year we have now re-doubled our efforts to ensure that we are able to complete the various programme targets we set ourselves in preparation for assuming responsibility for the Centre’s operations. In addition, we are now preparing for our Residents Opening Party. There will be a ―formal ―opening ceremony to commemorate the handing over of the Centre to BDBC scheduled for late March/ April. However, we are planning a separate residents and neighbourhood opening celebration to take place at the Community Centre on Saturday 7 May. The theme of the event will be Sports and children. As we get closer to the date we will be providing more information. The Association is looking to appoint a Community Centre Development Manager. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing and developing a large new Community Centre and its sports and football activities. The ability to demonstrate the expertise needed is paramount for such a role, a minimum of one year`s experience in a similar position is desirable. The position is full-time, working 37 hours per week; however the successful candidate is required to undertake a flexible work pattern to meet the demands and needs of the centre. The post attracts a salary in the range £22-25,000 depending on skills and experience. A minimum of two references will be required for this position and applicants will be subject to enhanced CRB screening. COLD WEATHER PAYMENTS Cold weather payments help people on a low income with fuel costs during periods of cold weather. It does not matter what you spend the money on, and they do not have to be repaid. Each postcode area of the country is linked to a weather station and payments are made for periods of cold weather. When the weather station forecasts or records an average daily temperature of 0 degrees centigrade or less for seven consecutive days, a payment will be made. Cold weather payments are different from Winter Fuel Payments which are made every winter to people aged over state pension age, regardless of the temperature. People on Income Support or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance You will be entitled to a cold weather payment if you get Income Support or income-based Jobseeker‟s Allowance for at least one day during the period of cold weather and: you have a child under five in your family, or you have a child for whom you get Child Tax Credit with an extra amount for their disability, or you get an extra amount for disability or for being over state pension age and you don't live in a care home. People on Pension Credit You are entitled to a cold weather payment if you get Pension Credit and don't live in a care home. People on income-related Employment and Support Allowance You are entitled to a cold weather payment if you get income-related Employment and Support Allowance and: you have a child under five in your family, or you have a child for whom you get Child Tax Credit with an extra amount for their disability, or you get an extra amount for disability or for being over state pension age and you don't live in a care home, or you get a support component or work-related activity component and you don't live in a care home. How to get a cold weather payment If you are entitled to cold weather payments, you will automatically be sent a payment for each period of cold weather. This is £25.00. You do not have to make a claim for a cold weather payment, but if you think you should receive one and you are not paid, you can make a written claim to your local benefit office. If they refuse to make a payment and you still think you are entitled, you can ask for the decision to be looked at again or you can appeal to an independent tribunal.
