The Whitecaps bullpen left a total of 10 Lake County baserunners stranded as Keider Montero, Zac Shepherd, Yaya Chentouf, and Zack Hess all combined to allow just one run on six strikeouts and just two free passes in the win. The Whitecaps jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Eric De La Rosa reached via an error before Dingler launched a two-run home run to forge the ‘Caps out in front 2-0. In the fifth inning, the Captains loaded the bases with just one out before Montero turned a rare inning-ending 1-2-3 double play to keep the ‘Caps lead at 2-0. The Captains scored their only run in the seventh, as José Tena ripped an RBI double. Still, it was too-little, too-late as Chentouf set the Captains down in order to end the ninth and send West Michigan on to their fifth-straight victory. Montero (1-3) enjoyed his longest professional start wielding five innings of shutout baseball while punching out five in the win. Captains starting pitcher, Tanner Burns (0-2), lasted five innings while allowing a pair of runs on three hits in his second defeat on the year. The Whitecaps improve to 12-9 on the season while the Captains fall to 11-11. With the victory, the Whitecaps are now tied with the Dayton Dragons for first place as the bullpen has allowed just four runs through their last 25 innings of work. Outfielder Daniel Cabrera led the way aside of Dingler’s home run with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. LEADING THE WAY: The Whitecaps earned both the High-A Central League Pitcher and Player of the Week in RHP Beau Brieske (6IP, 1H, 0ER, 9K) and 1B Rey Rivera (9x18, 3 2B, 4 HR). TURNBULL’S NO-NO: 2015 Whitecaps pitcher Spencer Turnbull tossed the eighth no-hitter in Detroit Tigers history on Tuesday night, dominating the Seattle Mariners as part of a 5-0 victory at T-Mobile Park.Turnbull becomes the first Tigers pitcher since Justin Verlander no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre in 2011, and struck out nine in the historic performance. The no-no is the fifth of its kind in Major League Baseball this season, as the last one came just 11 days prior when Reds pitcher Wade Miley no-hit the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. Turnbull went 11-3 with a 3.01 ERA as the headlining piece of the 2015 West Michigan Whitecaps Midwest League championship roster. ‘TORK’ HEADLINES ‘CAPS ROSTER: For the first time in Whitecaps history, the franchise features the first overall pick in the Major League Baseball Draft. Infielder Spencer Torkelson, the Detroit Tigers top prospect, headlines the Whitecaps 2021 roster. Torkelson also rates as the #3 prospect in Major League Baseball behind only Tampa Bay’s Wander Franco, and 2019 first overall pick Adley Rutschman of the Baltimore Orioles. The highest previous draft slot of a former ‘Caps player belonged to 2nd overall pick Ben Grieve of the Oakland Athletics who played the 1995 season in West Michigan. The highest Tigers draftee came in the form of 3rd overall pick Eric Munson in 1999. PROSPECTS APLENTY: Torkelson headlines a team featuring nine of the Tigers Top 30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. In addition, four of the six Tigers selections in the abbreviated 2020 MLB Draft are now Whitecaps, including catcher Dillon Dingler, outfielder Danny Cabrera, and infielder Trei Cruz of the third round. HEALTH REPORT: The ‘Caps injured list holds four players at this time in pitchers Franklin Perez, Hugh Smith, infielder Trei Cruz, and outfielder Parker Meadows. ALUMNI REPORT: 2017 Whitecaps outfielder Daz Cameron went 2-for-4 with a double, walk, and two RBI as theToledo Mud Hens fell by a score of 6-4 to the Louisville Bats on Friday.
