Atlantic Coast Conference The University of Miami volleyball team takes to the road for the second and third matches of their current five-match road swing this week, taking on Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) foes Duke University and Wake 2008 ACC STANDINGS Forest University. The Hurricanes are 1-0 in the league for just the sec- School ACC Overall ond time in the last four years after defeating in-state conference rival Miami 1-0 12-0 Florida State last Friday night at home in Coral Gables. Virginia Tech 1-0 10-2 Miami is riding the second-longest winning streak (14 matches) in school Georgia Tech 1-0 9-2 history dating back to the end of the 2001 campaign stretching into 2002. Maryland 1-0 5-8 At that time, the ‘Canes were not eligible for the NCAA Tournament in Duke 0-0 9-3 2001 due to just bringing back the program after a 20-year hiatus. In Wake Forest 0-0 9-3 2002, the ‘Canes started the season 15-0. However, this week’s matches North Carolina 0-0 6-5 will certainly test the young Hurricanes as their next four road matches include play at Duke (9-3), Wake Forest (9-3), Clemson (8-4, 0-1 ACC) North Carolina State 0-0 6-9 and Georgia Tech (9-2, 1-0 ACC). Florida State 0-1 8-3 Clemson 0-1 8-4 UM travels to Duke first on Thursday night, a place in which the Virginia 0-1 8-5 Hurricanes have never tasted victory. The Orange and Green is 0-2 in Boston College 0-1 6-7 Durham, and that stretch of famous “Tobacco Road” has been home to 3- 0 wins in favor of the Blue Devils. The ‘Canes have been defeated by 3- 0 scores in four of six matches against Duke since joining the ACC. UPCOMING ACC SCHEDULE Thursday, Sept. 25 Against Wake Forest, the Hurricanes are 5-2 all-time, and have won five Miami at Duke............................................7:00 p.m. of the last six matches against the Demon Deacons. In Winston-Salem, Florida State at Wake Forest ....................7:00 p.m. the ‘Canes are 2-0 since joining the ACC. The two teams split a pair of games last season, with the road team taking advantage each time. Friday, Sept. 26 The Hurricanes received other votes into his week’s AVCA poll for the first Clemson at Virginia Tech ..........................7:00 p.m. time this season. The Devils are also 4-0 at home Boston College at North Carolina..............5:00 p.m. this year with wins against Seton Hall, Colgate, Georgia and Delaware. Clemson at Virginia....................................7:00 p.m. Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech....................7:00 p.m. Duke is led by a trip of players including senior outside hitter Rachael Moss. She leads the team with 150 kills and holds an attack percentage of 28 percent (.282). She also has a team second-best 127 digs and 19 Sunday, Sept. 28 blocks. Behind her is Becci Burling with 114 kills and 71 digs. The setter Maryland at NC State ................................1:00 p.m. for the Blue Devils is Kellie Catanach with 440 assists under her belt. Tuesday, Sept. 30 ON WAKE FOREST... Duke at Wake Forest ................................7:00 p.m. The Deacons have started the season with a 9-3 record and have claimed three invitational titles. Wake opened the season with a win at the Deacon Invitational, then claimed the Black & Gold Challenge on Sept. 13 before Friday, Oct. 3 winning the Appalachian State Inv. last weekend.
