In the fall of 1938, Frida Kahlo traveled to New York for her first solo exhibition. There she met pho- tographer Nickolas Muray whom she had first met in Mexico, and they startecl a passionate affair. Muray, born in Hungary, was a successful New York fashion and commercial photographer known for his portraits of celebrities such as Fred Astaire, Marlene Dietrich, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ceorge Ber- nard Shaw, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Claude Monet. Having experimented with color from early on, Muray found his most colorful model in Frida Kahlo. Their liaison yielded a series of breathtaking, mostly color photographs.

Frida and Diego with Gas Mask Frida with Granizo Platinum and Silver Gelatin Prfnts

Platinum prints, also called platinotypes, are photographic prints made by a monochrome printing process that provides the greatest tonal range of any printing method using chemical development.

Unlike the silver print process, platinum lies on the paper surface, Frida and Diego with Hat, I94l while silver lies in a gelatin or albumen emulsion that coats the pa- per. As a result, since no gelatin emulsion is used, the final platinum image is absolutely matte with a deposit of platinum (and/or palla- dium, its sister element which is also used in most platinum photo- graphs) absorbed slightly into the paper. Also by Nickolas Muray The gelatin silver process is the photographic process used with currently available black-and-white films and printing papers. First invented in rB55 as a black and white photographic printing process, this color car- bon printing was used by Louis Ducos du Hauron of France, in t869, to make the very first color print in the history of photography. The Carbon Print has long enjoyed re- nown as the Rolls Royce of all photo processes for its beauty as well as for its image permanence.

These Frida Kahlo prints are a modern version of the classic Carbon Print. lmages are digitally captured on a high-resolution scanner and then edited on a computer. The ed- ited digital files are used to produce the high-resolution separation negatives required for contact printing onto the pigmented gelatin emulsions that are unique to the car- bon process.

Fridu Kuhlo, 1939 To make a transfer print, , magenta, yellow, and black pigmented gelatin Limited to 50 print run emulsions are first exposed to light through high-resolution digital separa- tion negatives. The exposed pigment films are then laminated, and the unexposed ar- eas of pigmented gelatin are washed away with hot water. When all four processed color layers are finally transferred together onto a final sheet of watercolor paper, they in Blue Dress form a high-quality, permanent color print. Frida

In all, it takes zt different printing steps to make a finished pigment transfer print. Printed onto the finest watercolor papers from the renowned Arches and Fabri- ano paper mills of France and ltaly, these prints have a distinctive surface and tex- ture. They are truly permanent, and will retain the beauty and vibrancy of their original colors for hundreds of years after conventional photographs have faded away. Frida with ldol
