UMI MICROFILMED 1990 INFORMATION TO USERS The most advanced technology has been used to photo graph and reproduce this manuscript from the microfilm master. UMI films the text directly from the original or copy submitted. Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. The quality of this reproduction is dependent upon the quality of the copy submitted. Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely affect reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyright material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are re produced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each original is also photographed in one exposure and is included in reduced form at the back of the book. These are also available as one exposure on a standard 35mm slide or as a 17" x 23" black and white photographic print for an additional charge. Photographs included in the original manuscript have been reproduced xerographically in this copy. Higher quality 6" x 9" black and white photographic prints are available for any photographs or illustrations appearing in this copy for an additional charge. Contact UMI directly to order. Article http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:272D9CD4-95F8-4C68-9C20-21666C620D1E A new mite species of Pseudoparasitus Oudemans (Acari: Meso- stigmata: Laelapidae), and a key to known Iranian species of the genus Shahrooz Kazemi Department of Biodiversity, Institute for Science and High Technology and Environmental Sciences, Graduate University of Advanced Technology, P.O. Box: 76315-117, Kerman, Iran; E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Pseudoparasitus hajiqanbari sp. nov., a new free-living species of the family Laelapidae is described based on adult females collected from forest litter in southern Caspian Sea, Mazandaran and Golestan Provinces, Iran. The new species can be easily distinguished from other members of the genus by a combination of characters, including presence of eight denticulate rows in deutosternal groove, edentate fixed digit of chelicerae, elongate post-stigmatic region of peritrematal shield and insertion of palp trochanter setae av1 on a protuberance. Also, a key to the known Iranian species of Pseudoparasitus Oudemans is provided. Key words: Soil mites, Parasitiformes, taxonomy, Iran. Introduction The family Laelapidae is a morphologically and ecologically diverse group of mites which currently comprise nine subfamilies and more than 1300 described species of parasites of vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as free-living forms and arthropod symbionts (Evans & Till 1966; Casanueva 1993; Radovsky & Gettinger 1999; Beaulieu 2009; Lindquist et al. 2009; Beaulieu et al. 2011). The genus Pseudoparasitus Oudemans, 1902 is poorly known worldwide including about 20 described species usually occur in soil and litter (Hunter 1966; Evans & Till 1966; Karg 1978, 1981, 1989, 2003; Ma 2004, 2007; Joharchi et al.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new monotypic mite genus of the family Laelapidae, Persicolaelaps gen. nov., is described to accommodate a new spe- cies, P. hallidayi sp. nov., on the basis of adult female specimens collected from decaying wood, soil and litter in northern Iran, Golestan and Mazandaran provinces, respectively. The new genus can be distinguished from other members of the family by a combination of morphological attributes, some of which are unique or rarely observed in laelapids, such as (1) a series of small subrectangular sclerites flanking dorsally coxae I and gnathosomal base and adjoining podal plates anterolaterally, which are extending from and fused with sternal shield between coxae I and II; (2) an epigynal shield, so broad as to reach or even overlap acetabula III–IV, posteriorly axe-shaped; (3) metasternal setae absent; (4) a typical anal shield, though capturing pair of opisthogastric setae JV3; (5) gnathotectum triangular and acuminate; (6) the presence of six setae on trochanter IV; (7) genu IV with two ventral setae (occasional in Laelapidae); (8) internal malae with a series of thick, elongate filaments.

NATIONAL MUSEUM Vol. 101 Washington : 1951 No. 3275 THE MITES OF THE SUBFAMILY HAEMOGAMASINAE (ACARI: LAELAPTIDAE) By Hugh L, Keegan ^ This paper comprises a general review of the distribution, classi- fication, and external morphology of the parasitic mites of the sub- family Haemogamasinae Oudemans, 1926. It is based largely on material in the United States National Museum, although numerous specimens from other sources were also examined. In the descriptions that follow, all specimens examined are in the National Museum unless otherwise indicated. None of the Haemogamasinae has been reported as a vector of disease, although several species of related subfamilies of Laelaptidae serve as vectors of virus and rickettsial disease agents, as well as of nematode and protozoan parasites of mammals, birds, and reptiles. Many laelaptid mites, normally parasites of rodents and birds, have been reported to attack man, causing dermatitis. Hill and Gordon (1945) reported that Euhaemogamasus oudemansi, along with several other species of mites, may have been responsible for an outbreak of ^ I am under obligation to many persons who contributed specimens, supplied collecting data, and extended other courtesies that were of great value in preparing this paper. Officials of the United States National Museum furnished facilities for study during the spring of 1946 and in addition lent me its entire collection of Haemogamasinae for nearly 2 years.
