Thankfully, however, due to the hard work of MAYSON Gr.1 winning sprinter and Gr.1 sire in 2020 so many industry bodies, the breeding season was successfully completed and flat racing, having been suspended initially, resumed behind closed doors. Prior to the pandemic, the Cheltenham • Fee: £4,000 p 2-3 Festival proved to be a tremendously special occasion for the Thompson family, where the red, white and blue colours of Cheveley Park Stud were carried to Grade 1 success by Ferny Hollow in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper and of course by the superstar Envoi Allen, in the Ballymore Novices’ TWILIGHT SON Group sire with his first crop in 2020 Hurdle. • MUSTASHRY DOMINATES the LOCKINGE CRYSTAL OCEAN DELIVERS AGAIN Click Or Tap Here to Go Straight to TDN Europe/International
SUNDAY, 19 MAY 2019 CRYSTAL OCEAN DELIVERS AGAIN MUSTASHRY DOMINATES Sir Evelyn de Rothschild=s Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea the Stars THE LOCKINGE {Ire}) is proof that reliability and consistency can translate to damning praise, but the >TDN Rising Star= was just admirably honest and genuine again on Saturday as he registered back-to- back renewals of Newbury=s G3 Al Rayyan S., or Aston Park S. Described as still unfurnished by Sir Michael Stoute despite his notable achievements as a 3-year-old, the homebred is now feeding back the rewards for his trainer=s much-discussed patient approach as he nears his most demanding test yet at Royal Ascot. Taking a straightforward course of action in the saddle as he generally does, Ryan Moore stuck close to the early leader and despite being attacked by Raymond Tusk three out coaxed the 2-9 favourite to the front a furlong later en route to another authoritative two-length success from Laraaib (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). Whether Crystal Ocean possesses the speed to deal with the likes of Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and Sea of Class (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the June 19 G1 Prince of Wales=s. at Royal Ascot remains to be seen, as the 2017 G1 St Mustashry and Jim Crowley clear in the Lockinge | Racing Post Leger runner-up has been short of his peak when winning the last two renewals of Sandown=s G3 Gordon Richards S. over that By Tom Frary 10-furlong trip. Cont. p4 Sir Michael Stoute=s renowned prowess with older horses had already been championed on Newbury=s Saturday card by Crystal Ocean (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the G3 Aston Park S., but the 6-year-old Mustashry (GB) (Tamayuz {GB}) readily trumped that by becoming the first of his age to win the G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S.

  • Pedigrees: a Practical Approach
Pedigrees: A Practical Approach TOBA Pedigree & Conformation Clinic Saratoga Springs, NY Suzi Shoemaker, Lantern Hill Farm 1 Ordway Pampered Princess Dreaming of Anna Capt. Candyman Can Welcome to Saratoga and TOBA’s pedigree clinic. I’m Suzi Shoemaker, of Lantern Hill Farm in Midway, KY. This morning I’ll discuss current thoroughbred breeding trends and encourage you to use practical horsemanship in your pedigree evaluations for breeding or buying thoroughbreds. I’ve been privileged to make my living breeding and selling racing thoroughbreds since graduating college and moving to KY from upstate NY in 1978. Along the way I’ve bred, raised or sold the likes of Eclipse Champion Dreaming of Anna, as well as Grade 1 winners Capt. Candyman Can, Pampered Princess and Ordway. 2 Hepburn and HER SMILE (G-1) in 2008 I’ve also been fortunate to care for horses for some of the country’s leading race horse breeders, and benefitted from living with their mares and foals and seeing diverse breeding philosophies put to the test. The best recent example of that is Mr. William Backer’s mating of Include to Capote’s daughter Hepburn which produced 2011 Grade 1 Prioress Stakes winner Her Smile. And while money from horses I bred and sold funded the purchase of two farms, I now have the great fortune to race some home-breds and find out first hand how certain traits fall out of pedigrees onto the race track. 3 Variability is decreasing in our gene pools Worldwide dominance of Northern Dancer-Mr. Prospector cross Increased book sizes for small number of Kentucky stallions Few new imports of outcross sires Speaking from that perspective, I’d like to share three observations about today’s pedigrees that might help you succeed at the track or the sales.

WEDNESDAY, 23 SEPTEMBER 2020 DREAM UPDATE FOR EVEN SO SISTER MARKET HOLDS UP AT By Daithi Harvey There may have been relative silence at The Curragh in July TATTERSALLS IRELAND when the Ger Lyons-trained Even So (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) won the G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks, but in the Boland household at Piercetown Stud in Meath the decibels were likely to have hit the high notes. Eight months previously the stud's owner Ronnie Boland and his son Aaron had bought a Footstepsinthesand (GB) half-sister to Even So as a foal at Goffs November for i22,000 and the now yearling filly will return to the sales ring with a massive update when she takes up her slot as lot 57 at the Goffs Orby Sale at Doncaster on Sept. 30. Being a half-sister to a Classic winner is no mean feat in itself; however, the pedigree is far from one dimensional, as the filly's dam Breeze Hill (Ire) (Danehill) is a half-sister to a brilliant Derby winner in Dr Devious (Ire) who also landed the G1 Irish Champion S. and the G1 Dewhurst S., as well as a champion sprinter in Archway (Ire).
