Straight Story t h e s t r a i g h t s t o r y EIN FILM VON DAVID LYNCH Ein Referat von Olga Borodajko, Katiuscia Hinz, Susanne Krekeler, Benjamin-Lew Klon REGIE: DAVID LYNCH DAVID LYNCH BIOGRAFIE • Geb. 20. Januar 1946 in Missoula, Montana, USA • 1964 machte er in Virginia seinen High-School-Abschluss und ging nach Washington, D.C. und Boston um Kunst zu studieren. Nach einem Jahr änderte er aber seine Pläne und wollte nun Maler zu werden. Er schrieb sich an der Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia ein um lernte einen Kunstmäzen kennen. • Dieser gab ihm 1968 den Auftrag, ein "bewegtes Gemälde" zu schaffen und Lynch lieferte das vierminütige Filmchen "The Alphabet" ab. Lynch konnte mit diesem Film ein Stipendium beim American Film Institute in Beverly Hills ergattern und machte sich an die Arbeit zu "The Grandmother". • 1970 wurde er für diesen Streifen ausgezeichnet und setzte sein Studium am American Film Institute fort. David Lynch drehte nun ganze sechs Jahre an "Eraserhead", der 1977 erschien und zum Kultfilm wurde. ERASERHEAD 1977 DAVID LYNCH BIOGRAFIE • Mel Brooks nahm Lynch unter seine Fittiche und ermöglichte ihm so den Spielfilm "Der Elefantenmensch", der Lynch 1980 schlagartig berühmt machte. Achtmal wurde der Film für den "Oscar" nominiert. • Er wurde mit Anfragen überhäuft, wollte mit dem Mainstram aber nicht zu tun haben und ließ auch George Lucas im Regen stehen, als dieser ihn für "Die Rückkehr der Jedi- Ritter" verpflichten wollte. • Lynch machte sich an die Arbeit zu "Dune - Der Wüstenplanet", der 1984 zum finanziellen Desaster wurde. Trotzdem arbeitete er noch einmal mit Produzent Dino de Laurentiis zusammen und schuf den Streifen "Blue Velvet, in dem seine spätere Partnerin Isabella Rossellini brillierte und der für ihn 1986 den internationalen Durchbruch bedeutete. Erneut wurde Lynch für den "Oscar" für die "Beste Regie" nominiert. 1986 DAVID LYNCH BIOGRAFIE • Nun enstanden 1990 die erfolgreiche TV-Serie "Twin Peaks" und das Roadmovie "Wild at Heart - Die Geschichte von Sailor und Lula". Dieser Streifen brachte David Lynch die "Goldene Palme" bei den 43. Filmfestspielen in Cannes ein. Außerdem wurde er ein weiteres Mal für einen "Oscar" nominiert und ging ein weiteres Mal leer aus. • Neben seinen großen Spielfilmen drehte Lynch etliche Kurz- und Werbefilme auf höchstem Niveau. Außerdem war er 1991 verantwortlich für zwei Musikvideos; "Dangerous" von Michael Jackson und "Wicked Game" von Chris Isaak. • Als 1997 sein siebter Spielfilm "Lost Highway" in die Kinos, lieferte Lynch ein Werk, was der Großteil der Besucher nicht verstand. Damit verlor er viele Fans, gewann aber andererseits viele dazu, die seine bizarre und dunkle Filmwelt liebten. 2001 David Lynch ist aber nicht nur Filmemacher, sondern auch ein angesehener Maler, Fotograf und Skulpturen-Bildner. Seine Werke zeigte er in berühmten Gallerien rund um den Globus, unter anderem in New York, Paris und Tokyo. DIE GESCHICHTE Die Geschichte beginnt in... Laurens, einer kleinen ländlichen Gemeinde im Norden von Iowa Rose und ihr Vater Alvin Straight Die Charaktere Alvin Straight · 73 jähriger, aufgewachsen mit seinem älteren Bruder auf einer Farm, allein stehend · wohnt mit seiner leicht behinderten Tochter zusammen in Laurens, Iowa · hat seit 10 Jahren Streit mit seinem Bruder Lyle, glaubt trotzdem an den Zusammenhalt einer Familie (Symbol: Stöcke) · Typ Mensch, der gerne draußen ist und die Natur genießt, wortkarg, sehr ehrgeiziger, aber auch dickköpfiger Mann, der sich lieber auf sein eigenes Handwerk verlässt -> seltsamer, eigenbrödlerischer Kauz · doch auch er wurde alt und hat damit zu kämpfen: seine Hüften erschweren ihm das Laufen · sein Stolz hindert ihn daran, sich von einem Arzt helfen zu lassen, anstatt einer OP benutzt er lieber einen zweiten Gehstock · durch nachlassende Sehkraft besitzt er keinen Führerschein · er liebt Gewitter und Rasenmähen · lässt sich in keiner Art und Weise in seine Pläne reinreden · war im 2.     RSA JOURNAL 28/2017 CRISTINA DI MAIO All Is Fair in Play and War: A Ludic Reading of Conflictual Dynamics in Three Short Stories by Grace Paley But most women in our P.T.A. were independent – by necessity and disposition. We were, in fact, the soft-speaking tough souls of anarchy. (Grace Paley, “Friends”) Grace Paley (1922-2007) spent a lifetime coping with the difficult task of being a poet, a writer, a mother, a woman, and an activist. Sometimes she struggled, and she was not afraid or ashamed of admitting it, even through her art. Still, her maiden name was Goodside, and this innate positivity was probably what pushed her to keep facing that hard challenge and win it, on her own terms. She thought that being a versatile human being and a committed person was not only inevitable for her, but also would make her an even better mother – and she claimed this vision through her artistic production as well. Paley’s biographer, Judith Arcana, in fact, remarks how Grace Paley chose to embrace her motherhood and her activism and integrate them both in her writing, thus challenging “the romantic image of the (archetypically male) artist as lonely seeker and interpreter of truth and beauty” (80). Her fictional, semi-autobiographical world is mostly populated by mothers who must deal with children, teachers, working hours, chores, sentimental troubles, social interactions and even political activism all at once; in doing so, she integrated all of her life experience into her writing and managed to reach a considerable share of readers, who similarly attempt to balance the maternal experience with their own individuality and personal goals.

    Ohebnost zvuku ve filmové tvorbě Davida Lynche Ann Kuznetzova Bakalářská práce 2020 ABSTRAKT Tato práce se zaměřuje na analýzu zvukové tvorby Davida Lynche, především filmové, na příkladu jeho audiovizuálních děl Mazací hlava, Příběh Alvina Straighta, Inland Empire a jejich srovnání. Zabývá se způsobem ztvárnění idejí a určením charakteru zvukové tvorby Davida Lynche. Hlavním cílem je zjistit, do jaké míry je podstatná a v čem spočívá její určující dominantní vlastnost – ohebnost, a také prozkoumat vliv jiných druhů umění, osob, prostředí a událostí, které tvůrce dovedly k vlastnímu uměleckému sebevyjádření prostřednictvím zvuku. Obsahuje také rozhovor se zvukovým inženýrem Johnem Neffem, který se podělil o svoji zkušenost ze spolupráce s Lynchem. This thesis examines David Lynch’s creative process and establish the essence of his sound design. The aim is to determine wherein lies – and how major of a role plays – the dominant characteristic of David Lynch’s work, its versatility, as well as to explore how the environment, society, and different fields of art influenced the filmmaker in his own artistic expression through the language of sound. To further help answering those questions, an interview with a sound engineer, John Neff, was conducted, in which he talked about his experience of collaborating with David Lynch on several projects.

Propongo las nociones de espacio autobiográfico y ubiquitous listening como instrumentos para analizar obras que abordan aspectos autobiográficos haciendo uso de elementos sonoros y visuales, aportando además una revisión crítica de la bibliografía sobre el sonido y la escucha en el arte contemporáneo. Aplico estas nociones a dos casos de estudio: 1) performances y videos de Marina Abramović realizados entre 1971 y 1997 que permiten comprender el desarrollo de la pieza Balkan Baroque (1997); y 2) las fotografías y video instalaciones de Shirin Neshat realizadas entre 1993 y 1997 que permiten comprender la pieza Turbulent (1998).
