    1. Forbidden Delta Planet Blues (15.49_ 2. The Pain Was Bad, But The Tuna Good (23.32) There are not many artists who take a career trajectory as strange and unexpected as Mike Cooper – I can think of Scott Walker going from pop crooner to forbiddingly brutalist explorer of the human condition, or Cornelius Cardew from rigorous serialism to sing-a-long Mao-ist pop tunes. But Cooper's journey from feted folk/blues guitarist, contemporary of Bert Jansch and Davey Graham to globe-trotting improviser versed in world music and the furthest extremes of experimental music is perhaps the most unique and interesting. It's interesting to me because unlike the other artists I mentioned he hasn't done a complete volte-face, but rather a slower expansion of his palette – his instrument of choice is still the resonator guitar, and his playing still retains the techniques recognisable from his earliest recordings. My own experience of Cooper's music was the mirror image of his development – the first record I owned by him was “'Ave They Started Yet” - an improvised record made with the dancer and vocalist Joanna Pyne, from 1980. From this (which now seems to me his most uncompromising release) I worked outwards, both backwards and forwards in time, and catching live performances whenever I could. The two pieces on this CD are quite different- the first, the title track, is a home studio recording and an experiment in long form improvisation. Mike says “my inspiration for these pieces is Henry Kaiser --who sent me a gorgeous box set of long form pieces recently, and The Necks - I have worked and recorded with Chris Abrahams over the past ten years --although not in the UK at all ( I am aiming to address that for next year)” The piece consists of a building layers of loops – over which a Hawaiian style slide guitar emerges and playfully works around the ebb and flow of the circular sounds.

  • An Interview with Mike Cooper
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Critical Studies in Improvisation / Études critiques en improvisation, Vol 7, No 2 (2011) ! Hail the Happy Accident: An Interview with Mike Cooper Grayson Cooke Mike Cooper is a consummate musician and improviser—an eclectic artist described by Room40’s Lawrence English as “post-everything.” English-born and with roots in acoustic country blues in the 1960s, Mike now presides over a wide range of projects and practices, from experiments with Greek Rembetika to soundscape recordings in Bangkok and live music for silent films. Linking all of these explorations is his instrument setup of choice: a 1930s National Resophonic guitar hooked up to a slew of effects processors, live-loopers, and samplers. In addition to being a sound artist, Mike is a music journalist and video maker. He is also a collector of Hawaiian shirts, and something of a magnet for Pacific kitsch. I have been lucky enough to work with Mike on a number of collaborations since 2008. When I was teaching digital media at the Bundaberg campus of CQU, in sub-tropical Queensland, Mike would come through every year touring his “Live Music for Silent Films” project. Given Mike’s love of the South Pacific, surf culture, and Hawaiian shirts, and my own explorations of the tropical aesthetic, in 2008 I proposed that we do a collaboration, a live audio-visual improvisation around the theme of “Tropica Exotica.” I cobbled together a motley collection of clips culled from 1970s surf films, undersea docos and South Pacific romance films, and we projected our show outdoors in the car-park behind the local art gallery.

A 2016 N T PRESENT G YOU THE U THIRD A R D I VOORUIT A GENT EDITION OF THE N EASTERN DAZE FESTI- 2 VAL festival is a co-joined effort between Sound in Motion, Vooruit, and ourselves. This edi- tion is again loosely inspired by the common and parallel paths off-stream music is follow- KRAAK THISing in every corner of the world. We shift from post-postmodern exotic music over female Touareg music to possible ethnic tapecollages, zenlike proto-minimalism, kosmische music and more. One of the themes is the idea of identity and its counterpersonae authenticity. The ‘I’ can be seen as a multilayered complex of conscious and subconscious forces instead of a fixed and never changing core. In art and music especially there are many shape shifters and / or Tricksters. As well SPENCER CLARK, MIKE COOPER or GIANCARLO TONIUTTI could be seen as Tricksters. They create music that raises smoke curtains. They like to obscure reality, and to project shades of other and possible worlds into your ears. They are presenting themselves as continuous shape-shifting beings, not because they like to dress up, but because they believe in the sha- manistic power of the artist. The artist as the enhancer of the trance. Cases in point; MIKE COOPER is obsessed by Island cultures and makes records that could be read as logbooks of his inward and worldwide travels. SPENCER CLARK presents on his latest record The World of Shells a creature that travels over space, time, earth and oceans.

  • ARSC Conference Keynote Presentation: Document Records, Gary Atkinson May 15, 2021 – 3:45-4:45 Pm EDT
ARSC Conference Keynote Presentation: Document Records, Gary Atkinson May 15, 2021 – 3:45-4:45 pm EDT Gary Atkinson was born in 1956, in Hull, East Yorkshire, England. As a child, his love of music was fired by hearing his father's 78 rpm records, including those by Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Terry, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton and many more. Gary was thirteen when his older brother, Michael, came home from The Blue Bell Blues and Folk club in Hull, reporting the excitement of seeing artists such as the guitarist / singer Jo Ann Kelly, (the late sister of The Blues Band's Dave Kelly,) who performed the songs of such ‘Country Blues’ artists including Memphis Minnie and Charley Patton. Around the same time, Michael brought home the album 'Oh Really!' by Mike Cooper, and it proved to be life-changing for Gary. Cooper’s slide guitar playing, his 1920s National steel guitars, and references to names such as Blind Boy Fuller, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Son House sparked Gary's interest and led to him learning to play guitar, and in performing at blues and folk clubs in Hull. By fourteen, he had met some of his first music heroes; Bukka White, Willie Dixon, Walter Horton, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Champion Jack Dupree and the gospel singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. At eighteen, Gary was invited to contribute to the magazine 'Sailors Delight'; Primarily a “blues record auction magazine” but with Gary's help, it also contained a strong dose of humorous, satirical articles to entertain the readership. At the age of thirty-two he met Gillian, whom he was to marry, and between them they set up a music agency, Spirit Music.

  • Frkwys Vol. 11
FRKWYS VOL. 11 Steve Gunn & Mike Cooper - Cantos de Lisboa For the the eleventh volume of FRKWYS, an unrestricted series pairing contemporary artists with their influential predecessors, gifted guitar squire Steve Gunn meets roving, radiating legend Mike Cooper in Lisbon, Portugal. Sharing their vision over lengthy living room guitar sessions and evenings of cold wine in Fado taverns, Gunn and Cooper created Cantos de Lisboa, an album with variable vernacular shades and musical forms from Portugal’s antiquity. Cantos means “corner” in Portuguese, as well as “chant” or “song” (this latter meaning evolved from the Latin antecedent referring to stanzas of verse in poetry). For two artists whose roots lie in the country blues and its subverted offshoots, the proverbial “corner” is actually home, the undisturbed spot where music can flourish. A tranquil interlude for these two travellers to create off-guard improvisations in their shared style of deconstructed guitar music, Cantos de Lisboa is a curious detail in the periphery of their snapshot of Portugal. In his fifty-year-plus career, Cooper’s global ventures have transported his music to exotic locales parallel to Lisbon. 2004’s Rayon Hula musically translated the patterned flora of aloha shirts (Cooper’s signature garment) as looped samples of famed Hawaiian vibraphone player Arthur Lyman for an avant vivified form of exotica. Rayon Hula signaled Cooper’s vital re-emergence as a dexterous alchemist of slide guitar. Cooper’s discography is colored with similar instances of casually conceptual, improvisatory guitar music, including his 1970 masterpiece Trout Steel (an album Gunn recalls in Cantos de Lisboa’s liner notes as shaping his own ambitions and music).
