Due to its biological and social functions, sex has a profound impact on an individual‟s physical and psychological health. Risky sexual behavior may have particularly harmful consequences, including contracting HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections, lowered self-esteem, unwanted pregnancy, and the experience of social stigma. There are moral battles fought over sex education or abstinence only programs, yet what exactly is understood by the word “sex” is often left to the interpretation of the individual. In fact, although evidence suggests that there is a high level of agreement indicating that both penile-vaginal and anal intercourse are considered “having sex,” this consensus does not extend to other behaviors, such as oral sex (Randall & Byers, 2003; Trotter & Alderson, 2007). Several factors are believed to influence variations in definitions of sex, including perceptions of behavioral appropriateness, the level of commitment in a relationship, and gender. -

NEIMAN Department of Biology, Indiana University, Bloomington (Received 6 December 2002; initial acceptance 10 April 2003; final acceptance 27 May 2003; MS. number: ARV-25) Despite the two-fold reproductive advantage of asexual over sexual reproduction, the majority of eukaryotic species are sexual. Why sex is so widespread is still unknown and remains one of the most important unanswered questions in evolutionary biology. Although there are several hypothesized mechanisms for the maintenance of sex, all require assumptions that may limit their applicability. I suggest that the maintenance of sex may be aided by the detrimental retention of ancestral traits related to sexual reproduction in the asexual descendants of sexual taxa. This reasoning is based on the fact that successful reproduction in many obligately sexual species is dependent upon the behavioural, physical and physiological cues that accompany sperm delivery. More specifically, I suggest that although parthenogenetic (asexual) females have no need for sperm per se, parthenogens descended from sexual ancestors may not be able to reach their full reproductive potential in the absence of the various stimuli provided by copulatory behaviour. This mechanism is novel in assuming no intrinsic advantage to producing genetically variable offspring; rather, sex is maintained simply through phylogenetic constraint. I review and synthesize relevant literature and data showing that access to males and copulation increases reproductive output in both sexual and parthenogenetic females. These findings suggest that the current predominance of sexual reproduction, despite its well-documented drawbacks, could in part be due to the retention of physiological dependence on copulatory stimuli in parthenogenetic females. -

PROTECT OUR CHILDREN FROM INTERNET PORNOGRAPHY Pornography is an addiction and an addiction is behaviour shaping, leading to the nullifying of any moral compass, hence, the Senate inquiry into the impact of online pornography on Australian children is most welcomed. INTRODUCTION. At the recent ‘Porn Harms Kids’ seminar held in the University of Sydney, the head of the Australian Childhood Foundation, Dr Joe Tucci, rang the alarm bells re an emerging public health crisis among our nation’s youth. He elaborated on how the widespread availability of pornography ‘online’ was detrimentally shaping children’s behaviour. Dr Tucci also highlighted the research which revealed the high percentage of those under the age of 16 (boys and girls) visiting pornographic websites. The tragedy is that health authorities are seeing an increase in the number of youngsters participating in problematic sexual behaviour with other children, ultimately, potential adults emerging with ongoing sexually offending lifestyles towards others. The following extract from this seminar is succinct: Attendee Tim Gordon, 23, from Melbourne, said he was addicted to pornography from the age of 11 to 13. "For me personally porn made it pretty difficult to see women as anything other than sex objects," Mr Gordon said. We are seeing that some women, especially young ones, are being coerced into sexual acts that might not be appealing to them. "To a certain extent, no matter how much you try and tell yourself that they're intelligent, complex people, your mind just doesn't let you when you're in that space; porn has a way of just dominating your mind." Coralie Alison from anti-pornography group Collective Shout agreed that early exposure to pornography online was affecting the way some young men treated women. -

On the Economic Origins of Constraints on Women’s Sexuality Anke Becker* November 5, 2018 Abstract This paper studies the economic origins of customs aimed at constraining female sexuality, such as a particularly invasive form of female genital cutting, restrictions on women’s mobility, and norms about female sexual behavior. The analysis tests the anthropological theory that a particular form of pre-industrial economic pro- duction – subsisting on pastoralism – favored the adoption of such customs. Pas- toralism was characterized by heightened paternity uncertainty due to frequent and often extended periods of male absence from the settlement, implying larger payoffs to imposing constraints on women’s sexuality. Using within-country vari- ation across 500,000 women in 34 countries, the paper shows that women from historically more pastoral societies (i) are significantly more likely to have under- gone infibulation, the most invasive form of female genital cutting; (ii) are more restricted in their mobility, and hold more tolerant views towards domestic vio- lence as a sanctioning device for ignoring such constraints; and (iii) adhere to more restrictive norms about virginity and promiscuity. Instrumental variable es- timations that make use of the ecological determinants of pastoralism support a causal interpretation of the results. The paper further shows that the mechanism behind these patterns is indeed male absenteeism, rather than male dominance per se. One appealing explana- tion is the sexually selected sperm (SSS) hypothesis, which proposes that polyandry evolves due to indirect selection stemming from positive genetic covariance with male fertilization efficiency, and hence with a male’s success in postcopulatory competition for paternity. However, the SSS hypothesis relies on verbal analogy with “sexy-son” models explaining coevolution of female preferences for male displays, and explicit models that validate the basic SSS principle are surprisingly lacking. We developed analogous genetically explicit individual-based models describing the SSS and “sexy-son” processes. We show that the analogy between the two is only partly valid, such that the genetic correlation arising between polyandry and fertilization efficiency is generally smaller than that arising between preference and display, resulting in less reliable coevolution. Importantly, indirect selection was too weak to cause polyandry to evolve in the presence of negative direct selection. Negatively biased mutations on fertilization efficiency did not generally rescue runaway evolution of polyandry unless realized fertilization was highly skewed toward a single male, and coevolution was even weaker given random mating order effects on fertilization. Our models suggest that the SSS process is, on its own, unlikely to generally explain the evolution of polyandry. -

Study 1 tested the hypothesis that UCPR predicts rationale-giving and choice-provision practices and, at the same time, mod- erates their relations with adolescents’ autonomous motivation. Study 2 replicated the association between UCPR and the parental practices, and further explored the role of parents’ authenticity as an antecedent of UCPR and parental autonomy support. Study 1 included 125 adolescents and Study 2 considered 128 college-students and their mothers. The offspring reported on their perceptions of their mothers and on their autonomous motivation, and the mothers reported on their sense of authenticity. Both studies found consistent associations between UCPR and parenting practices that may support autonomous motivation. Moreover, Study 1 demonstrated that the rationale giving and choice provision were more strongly related to adolescents’ autonomous motivation when adolescents perceived mothers as high on UCPR. Finally, Study 2 dem- onstrated that mothers’ authenticity predicted UCPR, which in turn was related to autonomy-supportive parenting. Findings support the assumption that parents’ autonomy-supportive practices are more effective when accompanied by UCPR. Female birds possess ornaments that indicate a number of important known aspects of quality and are usually costly to maintain. However, the extent to which female specific traits, such as maternal effects, are indicated is less clear. It is predicted by the Good Parent Hypothesis that this information should be displayed through intraspecific signal communication. -

It also occurs in humans where the female reproductive cell and the male reproductive cell unite to form a new individual. Female Sex Organs The ovary is part of the female sex organ. There are two ovaries in each woman’s body. Ova (singular ovum) or eggs are the female sex cells. The ova are stored in the ovaries of a female. A female is born with all the unripe eggs (or ova) she will ever have in her lifetime. When she reaches puberty, an egg will start to mature in the ovary. Every month, an egg will be released by the ovary into one of the Fallopian tubes. This is called ovulation. On average, a female is born with approximately one million eggs but they decline in number and quality as she grows older. In fact, a girl is only left with about 400,000 eggs by the time she reaches puberty. Only a few hundred are released during ovulation.
