  • Arthur Kopit: Inveterate
KU ScholarWorks | The Inge Digital Collection http://kuscholarworks.ku.edu Arthur Kopit: Inveterate Analyst of Frail Human Minds by Jeff Loomis Presented at the William Inge Theater Festival. March 29, 2014 The Inge Digital collection in KU ScholarWorks contains scholarly conference papers presented at the annual William Inge Theatre Festival, held at Independence Community College, in Independence, KS. The Independence Community College library is the curator of the William Inge Collection, home of over 400 manuscripts by William Inge donated primarily by Inge and his family, as well as press clippings, memorabilia and books. Arthur Kopit: Inveterate Analyst of Frail Human Minds By Jeff Loomis Presented at the William Inge Theater Festival 2014 2 Arthur Kopit: Inveterate Analyst of Frail Human Minds ”Wings,” produced in 1979 to high acclaim, is a key work in Arthur Kopit’s dramatic canon. In preparing this poignant transcription of one character’s efforts to conquer the debilitation caused by a cerebral hemorrhage, Kopit researched much medical data, after first having confronted his own father’s stroke and resultant death (“Wings” 142-143). Indeed, some critics have surmised that Emily Stilson, the central character of “Wings,” also dies, after enduring her second stroke, at the culmination of her drama’s plot (Simon 78, Rosen 78). The conclusion of the play seems ambiguous to me, though, and the drama surely strives, through much of its action, to demonstrate the slow, but apparently sure, dimensions of a recuperation that Emily Stilson had known, at least for a time. Meanwhile, of course, she did suffer (and we thus see dramatized) abundant personal anguish.

  • The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance
Gordon 1 Jessica Gordon 29 March 2010 Honors Thesis Everything was Beautiful at the Ballet: The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance During the mid-1860s, a ballet troupe from Paris was brought to the Academy of Music in lower Manhattan. Before the company’s first performance, however, the theatre in which they were to dance was destroyed in a fire. Nearby, producer William Wheatley was preparing to begin performances of The Black Crook, a melodrama with music by Charles M. Barras. Seeing an opportunity, Wheatley conceived the idea to combine his play and the displaced dance company, mixing drama and spectacle on one stage. On September 12, 1866, The Black Crook opened at Niblo’s Gardens and was an immediate sensation. Wheatley had unknowingly created a new American art form that would become a tradition for years to come. Since the first performance of The Black Crook, dance has played an important role in musical theatre. From the dream ballet in Oklahoma to the “Dance at the Gym” in West Side Story to modern shows such as Movin’ Out, dance has helped tell stories and engage audiences throughout musical theatre history. Dance has not always been as integrated in musicals as it tends to be today. I plan to examine the moments in history during which the role of dance on the Broadway stage changed and how those changes affected the manner in which dance is used on stage today. Additionally, I will discuss the important choreographers who have helped develop the musical theatre dance styles and traditions. As previously mentioned, theatrical dance in America began with the integration of European classical ballet and American melodrama.

A Study in Violin Pedagogy: Teaching Techniques from Selected Works by Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Bartók, and Delerue Layne Vanderbeek This article is an outline and analysis of a few specific methods of composition used by the composers Sergei Rachmaninoff, Sergei Prokofiev, Béla Bartók, and Georges Delerue for the purpose of reproducing the styles and techniques for an intermediate level violinist. This will be accomplished by gathering information concerning each composer and their style and then reproducing that style in an original composition at the intermediate level. Each composer will be dealt with in a section divided into several parts: relevant biographical and historical information, stylistic analysis, and methods employed to incorporate these stylistic characteristics into the intermediate level composition. The biographical and historical information will consist of pertinent historic, social, and political events that influenced compositional style and growth of each composer. Stylistic analysis will be based upon general historical information and analysis of the specific composition in consideration. Scalar resources, chord and harmony use, texture and rhythm will be discussed and illustrated. The incorporation of these stylistic elements into an intermediate level composition will be a direct conclusion to the previous section. The information gained in the stylistic analysis will be utilized in original intermediate compositions, and it will be illustrated how this is accomplished and how these twentieth-century techniques are being employed and incorporated. Within the section titled “Methods of Stylistic Incorporation,” portions of the intermediate compositions will be used to demonstrate aspects of the composers' styles that were included. Each complete intermediate composition will be placed at the end of each section to demonstrate the results of the analysis.
