E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We describe a new species of Amerotyphlops from an upland forest enclave in the state of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil. The new species is distinguished from the other seven South American species of Amerotyphlops by the combination of the following characters: nasal suture incomplete; rostral scale oval and yellowish cream with some dark brown spots; four supralabial scales; three infralabial scales; rows of scales around the body 18/18/18; middorsal scales from 204 to 225; dorsum with twelve to thirteen rows of scales dark brown and belly with four to five rows of scales immaculate yel- lowish cream; caudal spine dark brown; subcaudal scales 8–10 in female and 11–13 in males; maximum total length 233 mm. -

Abstract The evolutionary history and taxonomy of worm-like snakes (scolecophidians) continues to be refined as new molec- ular data are gathered and analyzed. Here we present additional evidence on the phylogeny of these snakes, from morphological data and 489 new DNA sequences, and propose a new taxonomic framework for the family Typhlopi- dae. Of 257 named species of typhlopid snakes, 92 are now placed in molecular phylogenies along with 60 addition- al species yet to be described. Afrotyphlopinae subfam. nov. is distributed almost exclusively in sub-Saharan Africa and contains three genera: Afrotyphlops, Letheobia, and Rhinotyphlops. Asiatyphlopinae subfam. nov. is distributed in Asia, Australasia, and islands of the western and southern Pacific, and includes ten genera:Acutotyphlops, Anilios, Asiatyphlops gen. -

The Madagascar-endemic typhlopid clade includes two species previously assigned to the genus Lemuriatyphlops (in the subfamily Asiatyphlopinae), which were not each others closest relatives. This contradicts a pre- vious study that described Lemuriatyphlops based on a sequence of the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 gene from a single species and found this species not forming a clade with the other Malagasy species included. -

Amerotyphlops tycherus Townsend, Wilson, Ketzler, and Luque-Montes, 2008. This recently described blindsnake is endemic to Honduras and known from two specimens from the vicinity of the type locality (the eastern slope of Cerro Santa Bárbara within Parque Nacional Montaña de Santa Bárbara), in an area supporting remnant cloud forest, and a third from La Florida, a locality within Parque Nacional Sierra de Agalta (McCranie and Valdés-Orellana, 2012) in remnant highland rainforest. This species is one of three members of the family Typhlopidae known from Honduras; the others are A. costaricensis and the also endemic A. stadelmani. Hedges et al. i Foreword Over the past few decades, the importance of Environmental Statistics has been growing rapidly. A natural result of this has been the demand for and use of environmental indicators that have become especially urgent as humankind grapples with varying methods to protect and save the environment. Accurate, timely and internationally comparable Environmental Statistics are essential in guiding policy interventions to sustainably salvage our rapidly depleting forests and ensure the sustainability of our marine and other natural resources. The changing climate due largely to irresponsible human behavior is wreaking havoc especially on the poorer small island developing states. The need for current environmental data is accentuated in times of natural disasters such as hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes and other natural disasters. The importance attached to Environmental Statistics is reflected in the international guidelines which recommend the collection, compilation, dissemination, and analysis of this sector of statistics, with equal urgency as that given to statistics and indicators in the Social, Economic and Demographic sectors. Urgently growing concerns about the impact of climate change, which threatens the very existence of human life on this planet have led our authorities to formulate and document at least one major goal that is directly related to the environment, as well as several indicators spread across the seventeen (17) Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by all countries by 2030. Evidence of achievement will crucially depend on the availability of key Environmental Statistics and Indicators. This current issue of the Environmental Compendium for Montserrat is the first of its kind and represents the efforts of the Statistics Department of Montserrat (SDM), working in close collaboration with its various partners, to address the need for Environmental Statistics and indicators. -

South American racers of the tribe Philodryadini are a widespread and diverse group of Neotropical snakes with a complex taxonomic and systematic history. Recent studies failed to present a robust phylogenetic hypothesis for the tribe, mainly due to incomplete taxon sampling. Here we provide the most extensive molecular phylogenetic analysis of Philodryadini available so far, including 20 species (83% of the known diversity) from which six were not sampled previously. -

Cerrophidion wilsoni Jadin, Townsend, Castoe, and Campbell, 2012. The Honduran Montane Pitviper is a priority one species with an EVS of 15, placing it in the high vulnerability category (see this paper). This pitviper is distributed primarily in lower montane rainforest at elevations from 1,400 to 3,491 m, but can occur peripherally in premontane rainforest and pine-oak forest as low as 1,220 m (Jadin et al. 2012). As indicated by Jadin et al. (2012: 10), this snake “occurs in at least 13 isolated highland forest areas across Eastern Nuclear Central America…and all known populations…are found within the borders of Honduras and El Salvador.” This juvenile individual was found in Refugio de Vida Silvestre Texíguat, in north-central Honduras. One of the describers of this taxon is the dedicatee of this paper, and the snake was named in honor of one of the authors. Photo by Josiah H. Townsend. Amphib.
