Over fifteen thousand species of orchids have been described, the vast majority of them tropical, and the greater part of them epiphytic, that is, normally growing on trees without deriving sustenance from them. But little more than ten per cent of the majestic total belong to Tropical Africa and moreover, so far as is known at present, within that area ground orchids predominate over epiphytic in the proportion of more than three to one. There is reason to believe that these figures are a reflection rather of our ignorance than of the truth. Because the Tropical African epiphytic orchids are not characterised by the magni• ficence and opulence of those of other regions, they have not attracted the commercial collector and certainly are most imperfectly known. Yet the local orchids display a delightful diversity of adaptation and of form. None are flamboyant, but many are beautiful, some are exquisitely dainty and a few are bizarre. They appeal to the same feelings and are capable of arousing the same enthusiasms as succulents or alpine plants. Moreover, anyone who takes the comparatively little trouble required to collect and grow them has the additional satisfaction of knowing that he is contributing to scientific knowledge. -

SORRIE University of North Carolina Herbarium North Carolina Botanical Garden Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27599-3280 ABSTRACT Recent field observations of Acmispon helleri in North Carolina point out a number of discrepancies or omissions regarding published descriptions, including stem color and pubescence, leaflet morphology and vestiture, and corolla color. Degree of foliation strongly corresponds with phenology –– loss of leaves and leaflets over time appears to be common. Acmispon helleri (Britt.) A.A. Heller is the eastern segregate of the western and midwestern A. americanus (Nutt.) Rydb. and is restricted to scattered locations in the piedmont of south-central Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and northeastern Georgia (Weakley 2015). It was formerly placed within Lotus, sometimes as a full species, sometimes as a variety (see Brouillet 2008 and Weakley 2015 for synonymy). Observations of living plants at sites in the lower piedmont of Union County, North Carolina, in 2010 suggest that several morphological characters are at variance with published descriptions. The most detailed description available is that of Wilbur (1963); also very helpful are the illustrations in Chafin (2007). Radford, Ahles, and Bell (1968) followed Wilbur in writing their description. 1. Stem color. Neither Wilbur nor Radford, Ahles, and Bell mention this. In the Union County plants, stems are wholly reddish brown. Branches are green, but often reddish brown basally. 2. Pubescence of stems and branches. Wilbur: stems and branches are "glabrate (especially below) to moderately spreading villous-pubescent." In the Union County plants, stems are sparsely to moderately villous throughout and branches moderately to densely villous. -

This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. Relationships among all subtribes of Neotropical Cymbidieae (Orchidaceae) were estimated using combined matK/ycf1 plastid sequence data for 289 taxa. The matrix was analyzed using RAxML. Bootstrap (BS) analyses yield 100% BS support for all subtribes except Stanhopeinae (87%). Generic relationships within subtribes are highly resolved and are generally congruent with those presented in previous studies and as summarized in Genera Orchidacearum. Relationships among subtribes are largely unresolved. The Szlachetko generic classification of Maxillariinae is not supported. A new combination is made for Maxillaria cacaoensis J.T.Atwood in Camaridium. Bark grey with shallow irregular tessellations or flaky; outer blaze orange, inner blaze fawn to cream. Leaves Leaves simple, opposite or in whorls of three. Stipules conspicuous, 8-10 mm long, completely encircling the twigs, minutely hairy or glabrous outside; colleters present between inner surface of stipule and stem, arising from base of stipule as fingerlike glands. Petiole 1-4 mm long. Leaf blades ovate, obovate or elliptic, 4-12.5 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, base cuneate, margin entire, apex obtuse or acute. Fraga ABSTRACT: We present an annotated catalogue of the vascular flora of the upper Santa Ana River watershed, in the southern San Bernardino Mountains, in southern California. The catalogue is based on a floristic study, undertaken from 2008 to 2010. Approximately 65 team days were spent in the field and over 5,000 collections were made over the course of the study. The study area is ca. 155 km2 in area (40,000 ac) and ranges in elevation from 1402 m to 3033 m. The study area is botanically diverse with more than 750 taxa documented, including 56 taxa of conservation concern and 81 non-native taxa. Vegetation and habitat types in the area include chaparral, evergreen oak forest and woodland, riparian forest, coniferous forest, montane meadow, and pebble plain habitats. -

Terrestrial (11) and epiphytic (18) orchids, 29 in total, are used by Bangladeshi rural and tribal people for the treatment of nearly 45 different diseases and ailments. Roots, tubers, pseudobulbs, stems, leaves and even whole plants are used. Some herbal preparations have miraculous curative properties. Unfortunately, these preparations have not typically been subjected to the precise scientific clarification and standardization which are consequently required for clinical implementations. Some of the orchids are endangered due to over-exploitation and habitat destruction. New naturalized record The following report is paraphrased from Melora K. Purell, Coordinator of the Kohala Watershed Partnership on the Big Island, who sent an email alert to the conservation com - munity in August 2008 reporting on the incipient outbreak of R. vomitoria, poison devil’s- pepper or swizzle stick, on 800–1200 ha (2000–3000 acres) in North Kohala, Hawai‘i Island. First noticed by field workers in North Kohala about ten years ago, swizzle stick has become a growing concern within the past year, as the tree has spread rapidly and invaded pastures, gulches, and closed-canopy alien and mixed alien-‘ōhi‘a forest in North Kohala, where it grows under the canopies of eucalyptus, strawberry guava, common guava, kukui, albizia, and ‘ōhi‘a. The current distribution is from 180–490 m (600–1600 ft) elevation, from Makapala to ‘Iole.
