Chapter 5.1: Land Use, Zoning, and Public Policy A. INTRODUCTION This chapter describes existing land use, zoning, and public policies applicable to the proposed project and evaluates potential significant adverse effects that may result from implementation of the proposed flood protection system. Potential significant adverse effects to land use as a result of implementing the flood protection system are also evaluated. Potential land use issues include known or likely changes in current land uses within the study area, as well as the proposed project’s potential effect on existing and future land use patterns. Potential zoning and public policy issues include the compatibility of the proposed project with existing zoning and consistency with existing applicable public policies. PROJECT AREA ONE Project Area One extends from Montgomery Street on the south to the north end of John V. Lindsay East River Park (East River Park) at about East 13th Street. Project Area One consists primarily of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt East River Drive (FDR Drive) right-of-way, a portion of Pier 42 and Corlears Hook Park as well as East River Park. The majority of Project Area One is within East River Park and includes four existing pedestrian bridges across the FDR Drive to East River Park (Corlears Hook, Delancey Street, East 6th Street, and East 10th Street Bridges) and the East Houston Street overpass. Project Area One is located within Manhattan Community District 3, and borders portions of the Lower East Side and East Village neighborhoods. PROJECT AREA TWO Project Area Two extends north and east from Project Area One, from East 13th Street to East 25th Street. -

Geismar, Ph.D., LLC Re: 109 Waverly Place, Manhattan I Report Date: January 2009 To comply with a request made by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (NYCLPC) to determine if a mid-19th-century water cistern might survive at 109 Waverly Place I (Block 553, Lot 34), a worksite located in the Greenwich Village Historic District, Aries Construction & Builders Co., Inc., engaged Joan H. Geismar, Ph.D., LLC, to investigate the matter. An NYCLPC map review had suggested that the cistern, a ubiquitous and often I archaeologically rewarding backyard feature, might survive under alate-19th-century, rear building extension. At the time of the request, construction was in progress in the backyard of the 4-story house erected on the north side of Waverly Place west of Washington SquarePark in I 1839 or 1840. Subsequent but limited research (maps, census manuscripts, deed index, New York City Directories) I indicated the builder was Asaph Stone, I a British-born merchant. Stone also owned and built neighboring 105,107, and III Waverly Place (Tax Assessments 1841), with 107 Waverly his home. Until 1855, 109 Waverly Place was rented to various merchants, but in that year, Stone's I descendents sold 109 Waverly Place to August Noel, then a window glass merchant. -

Report: Federal Houses Landmarked Or Listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places 1999
GREENWICH VILLAGE SOCIETY FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION Making the Case Federal Houses Landmarked or Listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places 1999-2016 The many surviving Federal houses in Lower Manhattan are a special part of the heritage of New York City. The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation has made the documentation and preservation of these houses an important part of our mission. This report highlights the Society’s mission in action by showing nearly one hundred fifty of these houses in a single document. The Society either proposed the houses in this report for individual landmark designation or for inclusion in historic districts, or both, or has advocated for their designation. Special thanks to Jiageng Zhu for his efforts in creating this report. 32 Dominick Street, built c.1826, landmarked in 2012 Federal houses were built between ca. 1790 to ca. 1835. The style was so named because it was the first American architectural style to emerge after the Revolutionary War. In elevation and plan, Federal Period row houses were quite modest. Characterized by classical proportions and almost planar smoothness, they were ornamented with simple detailing of lintels, dormers, and doorways. These houses were typically of load bearing masonry construction, 2-3 stories high, three bays wide, and had steeply pitched roofs. The brick facades were laid in a Flemish bond which alternated a stretcher and a header in every row. All structures in this report were originally built as Federal style houses, though -

Examiner, USA THE IMPACT OF THE COMPACT 1 The big buzz about small formats E VERYTHING MAKES A COMEBACK. There is an eternal renaissance of essential things. In journalism, design, literature and art. Things tend to simplify themselves. As life in big cities turns more chaotic, technology becomes more accessible with wireless, fast communication available to larger mass- es of the population. For the printed media, this translates into smaller formats, more reader-friendly for users who seek simpler storytelling, quicker messages, and who seem to prefer, as in everything else, the smaller packages. In the case of newspapers, we have had to wait a long time and climb a steep mountain to get to this exciting moment in which more newspapers are look- ing at smaller formats as an option. For many, it is already a reality. Conversion from broadsheet to tabloid has paid off: Readers like it, advertisers get used to it faster than anyone thought, and the “wave” of tabloid conversions extends globally. Even the United States is taking a peek into what some of their news- papers will look like in a format other than the huge broadsheet that has served as the canvas for decades. -

Abstract During the past several years, as traditional news operations have faced sharp declines in circulation, advertising, viewership, and audiences, and as they have begun to make a seemingly unrelenting series of cuts in the newsroom budgets, scholars and professionals have been seeking formulas or models designed to reverse the trend. During those same years, many of the major news organizations that dominated the landscape a generation ago, those that David Halberstam called “The Powers That Be,” have lost their leadership role and been absorbed by other companies. This paper argues that while there is good reason to worry about the decline in what might be called “boots-on-the-ground” journalism, there are reasons to be hopeful. While most of those concerned with the topic have urged structural changes in ownership, this paper argues that the key is leadership. To understand the demands on leaders, it is essential to understand which of three motives is most important to the publication’s owners: profits, influence, or personal prestige. Each motive presents distinct challenges and opportunities. Looking at the fate of a number of large media organizations over the past decade, the paper argues that the most important model for success is outstanding leadership that combines a talent for business, entrepreneurship and innovation with a profound commitment to great journalism. -

In 1903, L’Amoureux sold the hotel to Frederick D. Fricke. Fricke, in 1908, built an identical, connecting building to create a grand apartment hotel, complete with reading rooms, restaurant, and banquet facilities. Four years later he added a ninth floor and, in 1917 he built an adjoining three story building, bringing the hotel to MacDougal Street, at the northwest corner of picturesque Washington Square. -
