Appalling! Terrifying! Wonderful! Blaxploitation and the Cinematic Image of the South
Antoni Górny Appalling! Terrifying! Wonderful! Blaxploitation and the Cinematic Image of the South Abstract: The so-called blaxploitation genre – a brand of 1970s film-making designed to engage young Black urban viewers – has become synonymous with channeling the political energy of Black Power into larger-than-life Black characters beating “the [White] Man” in real-life urban settings. In spite of their urban focus, however, blaxploitation films repeatedly referenced an idea of the South whose origins lie in antebellum abolitionist propaganda. Developed across the history of American film, this idea became entangled in the post-war era with the Civil Rights struggle by way of the “race problem” film, which identified the South as “racist country,” the privileged site of “racial” injustice as social pathology.1 Recently revived in the widely acclaimed works of Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) and Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), the two modes of depicting the South put forth in blaxploitation and the “race problem” film continue to hold sway to this day. Yet, while the latter remains indelibly linked, even in this revised perspective, to the abolitionist vision of emancipation as the result of a struggle between idealized, plaintive Blacks and pathological, racist Whites, blaxploitation’s troping of the South as the fulfillment of grotesque White “racial” fantasies offers a more powerful and transformative means of addressing America’s “race problem.” Keywords: blaxploitation, American film, race and racism, slavery, abolitionism The year 2013 was a momentous one for “racial” imagery in Hollywood films. Following the work of Peter Brooks on melodrama, the exploitation film is a mode concerned with spectacular violence and its relationship to the political, as defined by French philosopher Jacques Rancière. For Rancière, the political is an “intervention into the visible and sayable,” where members of a community who are otherwise uncounted come to be seen as part of the community through a “redistribution of the sensible.” This aesthetic rupture allows the demands of the formerly-invisible to be seen and considered. We can see this operation at work in the exploitation film, and by investigating a series of exploitation auteurs, we can augment our understanding of what Rancière means by the political. -

religions Article Rescue US: Birth, Django, and the Violence of Racial Redemption Joseph Winters Religious Studies, Duke University, Durham, NC 27708, USA; [email protected] Received: 19 December 2017; Accepted: 8 January 2018; Published: 12 January 2018 Abstract: In this article, I show how the relationship between race, violence, and redemption is articulated and visualized through film. By juxtaposing DW Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation and Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, I contend that the latter inverts the logic of the former. While Birth sacrifices black bodies and explains away anti-black violence for the sake of restoring white sovereignty (or rescuing the nation from threatening forms of blackness), Django adopts a rescue narrative in order to show the excessive violence that structured slavery and the emergence of the nation-state. As an immanent break within the rescue narrative, Tarantino’s film works to “rescue” images and sounds of anguish from forgetful versions of history. MAP Expressive Culture; Prof. Ed Guerrero Wed. 12:30 to 4:30, Rm 102 Cantor Black American Cinema This course will view a range of films made by, for, and about black Americans in popular commercial cinema. Our viewing, reading and writing will cover a developmental, historical range of black focused films and film making practices over the past one hundred years. We will cover a range of critical concerns from the crude racial provocations of The Birth of a Nation (1915), to an ‘entertaining blackness’ expressed in such films as Cabin in the Sky (1943); to Blaxploitation’s brilliant industry intervention and moment; or the challenge of independent black narratives like Killer of Sheep (1977) and Bless Their Little Hearts (1984); to ‘crossover,’ commercially ambitious films like Soul Food (1997) or Paid in Full (1997); and on to viewing break through masterworks like Do the Right Thing (1989). We will cover the debates and issues focused on the development of black American cinema, including the representation of race, class, gender and sexuality, as well as how social and economic conditions work to overdetermine African American cinema production and its varied directions. Films are analyzed within their socio-cultural contexts, with particular attention to how race and identity interact with class, gender, and sexuality. We consider the link between film and other forms of Black popular culture. Threads: What Does Clothing Have to Do with Race, Culture, Politics, and the Environment? (AAS 317, 3 credits) Megan Sweeney As our readings and discussions will highlight, clothing signals individuality and social legibility. It's a necessity and a privilege, protective and decorative, utilitarian and the stuff of consuming artistic passion. Clothes manage anxieties and create them, serve as armor and sometimes as sword. They reconcile and multiply our various selves. Clothing is a domain of the deadly serious and a domain of the lighthearted. Ace in the Hole Discussion Guide
Film C L U B ACE IN THE HOLE The alternate title for Ace in the Hole is The Big Carnival, which tells you a little bit about the movie’s real feelings toward its main character, Chuck Tatum, played by (recently deceased) Kirk Douglas. Tatum is a journalist who’s down on his luck, who once was a star reporter at a big-city paper but has worked his way west, having been fired from 11 different newspapers for a range of transgressions ranging from libel to drunkenness to adultery. What we know about Tatum from the start is that if he ever had any scruples, he doesn’t anymore. Now he’s stuck at the Albuquerque Sun-Bulletin, sure he’s too good for everyone there, and eager to find a foothold that will help him work his way back into the spotlight. One day, he catches wind of a promising local scoop: a man who’s gotten trapped in a cave. Ace in the Hole is set in an era long before 24/7 cable news, but Tatum would fit in well today in our zillion-ring media circus. He immediately figures out how to turn the man’s unfortunate accident into a spectacle that will grab national headlines, and he does it. I don’t take Ace in the Hole to be an indictment of good old shoe-leather journalism. (That’s my profession, after all, and I have enormous admiration for colleagues who make very little money breaking their necks to track down stories that will bring about important change.) But I do think it has something to say to the time we live in, just as it did nearly 70 years ago -- that in the human heart lurks the desire to be recognized and celebrated and praised, to gain power for ourselves, even at the expense of someone else. -
