Kuskie SOUTH EAST ARCHAEOLOGY Pty Ltd ACN 091 653 048 www.southeastarchaeology.com.au 24 Bamford Street HUGHES ACT 2605 Telephone: 02-6260 4439 September 2008 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Bloomfield Collieries Pty Ltd has lodged a Part 3A Major Project application for the completion of open-cut coal mining and rehabilitation of areas within Mining Lease CCL761. The application area is located several kilometres south of East Maitland in the Lower Hunter Valley of New South Wales. It measures a total of 318 hectares and includes all of the existing Mining Operations Plan approved area, as well as a workshop area, an access road to the workshop and a haul road from the active mining area to the washery coal stockpile pad. South East Archaeology has been commissioned by Bloomfield Collieries to undertake an Aboriginal heritage impact assessment for this Part 3A Major Project application. The principal aims of the assessment were to identify and record any Aboriginal heritage evidence or cultural values within the study area, assess the potential impacts of the proposal on this evidence, assess the significance of this evidence, and formulate recommendations for the conservation and management of this evidence, in consultation with the local Aboriginal community. The investigation proceeded by recourse to the archaeological and environmental background of the locality, followed by a field survey undertaken with representatives of the local Aboriginal community, in accordance with the relevant Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) policies and Department of Planning (DoP) requirements.

JWe almost filled the meeting room generously provided by the management of O’Donoghues Irish Pub. The meeting’s success will ensure our return to Emu Plains next year. The July General Meeting also gave us an opportunity to welcome Geoff Pearne, a new member. Then we had first-time attendees John Summerville, Graham Anderson, John Craig, Brian Holland and Allan Gilkes. It was heartening to see a mix of new westies and regulars and I hope the experience encourages the first timers to make their way into the Financial Sector Union premises for the general meetings. After the meeting’s adjournment, we proceeded downstairs, where again the O’Donoghues staff looked after us with top quality food, drink and service. A HISTORY OF THE ARCHITECTURE AND ARCHITECTS OF HIGH STREET MAITLAND, NEW SOUTH WALES THE ARCHITECTURE OF HIGH STREET, MAITLAND AN ARCHITECTURAL SCIENCE AND RESEARCH THESIS BY K. D. CHARLTON 1961 ARCHITECTURE DIPLOMA COURSE NEWCASTLE COLLEGE UNIVERSITY OF N.S.W. ! The father of architectural history in Australia, he wrote The Early Australian Architects and Their Work (1954) and The Architecture of Victorian Sydney (1956). Each week, he travelled from Sydney to conduct design studios in the part-time course I began in 1954. He supervised my research and writing, then awarded the thesis a Distinction and used it as one of the sources for The Blackets (1963). I submitted the thesis in late 1961 to Eric Parker, Head of the School of Architecture in Newcastle. When the English poet and architecture enthusiast John Betjeman visited Newcastle soon afterwards, he regretted he could not fit in a visit to Maitland. Parker offered a loan of the only copy of the thesis, and Betjeman took it on the train, which passed through Maitland, to Brisbane and returned it by mail three weeks later.
