    SIR ANDREW DAVIS Music Director and Principal Conductor, Lyric Opera of Chicago Biography (Full Version) Sir Andrew Davis has served as music director and principal conductor of Lyric Opera of Chicago since 2000. His contract with Lyric Opera was recently extended through the 2020-2021 season. In January 2013 Sir Andrew began his tenure as chief conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He is also conductor laureate of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (having previously served as principal conductor), conductor laureate of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (his tenure as that ensemble’s chief conductor was the longest since that of its founder Sir Adrian Boult) and former music director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera. The English conductor begins his 2014-2015 season at Lyric Opera for the company’s new production of Don Giovanni , as well as Strauss’s Capriccio. Following Lyric Opera’s 60th Anniversary Diamond Gala, Sir Andrew heads to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for a series of concerts, and then to the Metropolitan Opera to conduct Hansel und Gretel and a new production of The Merry Widow directed by Susan Stroman. In the New Year, Sir Andrew returns to Lyric Opera to conduct the monumental Tannhauser, and Lyric’s presentation of David Pountney’s production of Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s The Passenger. The rest of the 2014-2015 season includes returns to Melbourne for the continuation of Sir Andrew’s exploration of all the Mahler Symphonies with the MSO as well as performances of Britten’s War Requiem, and engagements with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, The Toronto Symphony (Verdi’s Requiem), and performances with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Three Choirs Festival.

After his singing career ended in 1968, he became the artistic administrator of the John F. Kennedy Center, and later, the director of the Washington Opera, but he also devoted much of his time and effort to the support and nurturing of young opera singers. While London passed away in 1985, The George London Foundation for Singers has been honoring, supporting, and presenting the finest young opera singers in the U.S. and Canada with activities including an annual competition and recital series, that Opera News has called “a living testament to the peerless bass‐baritone's talent and generosity.” The George London Foundation for Singers 2019‐20 Season of Events ‐ Page 2 of 6 The 2019‐20 season of events presented by the George London Foundation for Singers continues this legacy with two duo recitals featuring four George London Award winners, and the esteemed George London Foundation Competition which, as The New York Times said, “can rightfully claim to act as a springboard for major careers in opera.” And the foundation will also host a gala benefit reception to mark the centennial of its namesake.

    Contact: Christopher Robins The Michael Russell Group (310) 939-9024 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 10 FAMOUS JUDGES TO SEARCH FOR “CLASSICAL” IDOLS AT JOSÉ ITURBI MUSIC COMPETITION AT UCLA JUNE 16-21 LOS ANGELES, MARCH 27, 2008 -- Daniel Pollack, Bruce Sutherland, Eduardo Delgado, Vladimir Viardo, Oxana Yablonska, David Daniels, Gianna Rolandi, Vladimir Chernov, Marvelee Cariaga and Robin Thompson have been confirmed as the 10 “world class” judges for The 2008 José Iturbi International Music Competition to take place June 16 – 21 in Los Angeles at UCLA’s Schoenberg Hall. April 15 is the application deadline for pianists and singers to compete for the 48 slots in the weeklong competition that adds features of “American Idol” to the world of classical music. Applications may be completed and submitted online at www.joseiturbifoundation.org for the contest offering the largest cash bounty (more than $250,000) of any classical piano and singing competition worldwide. Martin Katz, famed accompanist to singers including Marilyn Horne, Frederica von Stade, José Carreras and David Daniels, will accompany all the finalists in voice on June 20. “We’re delighted that ten world-class performers and educators will serve as the judges for the 2008 José Iturbi International Music Competition,” said Donelle Dadigan, President of the José Iturbi Foundation. “In addition to receiving international awards and acclaim as concert talent, each has trained and coached numerous students who have won major music competitions around the world. The José Iturbi Foundation is very excited to see who our judges will pick to be the next new talents in the world of classical music.” The piano judges are: Daniel Pollack (Chairman) – a major concert and recording artist, Tchaikovsky competition winner, judge of competitions worldwide, and master teacher and piano professor at USC and of international prize-winning pianists.
