Past Yasuda Kinen winners that have subsequently become the season’s Horse of the Year include Oguri Cap (JPN, by Dancing Cap; ’90), Taiki Shuttle (USA, by Devil’s Bag; ’98), Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet; ’08 &’09), Lord Kanaloa (JPN, by King Kamehameha; ’13) and Maurice (JPN, by Screen Hero; ’15). The race joined the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series in 2016, enabling its winners to earn automatic starting position in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1, 1,600m), while the first three finishers of this race are eligible to start in the French G1 Prix Jacques le Marois (1,600m) since 2017. This year’s Yasuda Kinen was the first start for Admire Mars, Mr Melody and Persian Knight—respective winners of the Hong Kong Mile (G1, 1,600m), the 2019 Takamatsunomiya Kinen (G1, 1,200m) and the 2017 Mile Championship (G1, 1,600m)—since returning from the UAE where the Dubai World Cup meeting was cancelled due to COVID-19. Defending champion and 2019 Best Sprinter or Miler Indy Champ came off a comfortable victory in the Milers Cup (G2, 1,600m; Apr.26) with Vin de Garde following in third.

  • Exclusive Topics for Horse Racing in Japan – Summer Edition –
Exclusive Topics for Horse Racing in Japan – Summer Edition – July 2021 The Japan Racing Association JRA-organized races and racegoers have fortunately been able to avoid the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic this year. Whereas races had to be held in front of empty stands from mid- January, venues gradually began to reopen their doors with capacity limitations as early as March, Nakayama Racecourse being the last to do so in April. With the exception of the February Stakes, the spring G1 series was able to be held with the attendance and support of fans. The World All-Star Jockeys, however, which is held annually in Sapporo in late August, had to be canceled for the second year in a row. Major spring events around the world resumed this year. At the Dubai World Cup day meeting in late March, Japanese contenders registered runner-up efforts in four G1 races on the card. The following month, they swept the top four places in Hong Kong’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,000m), where Loves Only You (JPN, M5, by Deep Impact) took home first prize. As contenders expected to compete abroad this autumn gradually coming to light, six home-bred nominees for this year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1, 2,400m) on October 3 were announced in May. The first potential Arc runner to be announced was Deep Bond (JPN, C4, by Kizuna), who was 10th, 5th and 4th in last year’s Triple Crown races, each time behind champion Contrail (JPN, C4, by Deep Impact) who made a clean sweep.

  • Subject: Results of the 65Th Osaka Hai (G1)
FROM: Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: April 4, 2021 SUBJECT: RESULTS OF THE 65TH OSAKA HAI (G1) The Osaka Hai, renewing its name in 2017 from the familiarly known Sankei Osaka Hai, was established in 1957 as a handicap race open to runners of four years of age and upwards run over 1,800m at Hanshin Racecourse in March. After the distance was extended to 2,000m in 1972, the date was moved to one week earlier to the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) in 1981. The race was given G2 status in conjunction with the new grading system in 1984, opened its doors to foreign competitors in 2003 and was upgraded to G1 in 2017. The winner of the race will automatically earn a starting position in the Irish Champion Stakes (G1, 2,000m) held in September. Attracting strong contenders by serving as a prep race for G1 spring races for older horses such as the Tenno Sho (Spring) (G1, 3,200m) and the Takarazuka Kinen (G1, 2,200m), many Osaka Hai champions have gone on to achieve G1 successes; Meisho Samson (JPN, by Opera House) in 2007, Hiruno d’Amour (JPN, by Manhattan Cafe) in 2011, two-time Horse of the Year Kitasan Black (JPN, by Black Tide) in 2017, all went on to capture the Tenno Sho (Spring) that followed; and Dream Journey (JPN, by Stay Gold) in 2009 landed his Takarazuka Kinen victory two starts later. Last year’s victor Lucky Lilac (JPN, by Orfevre) went on to defend her Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1, 2,200m) title last November.
