  • Educational Resource Packet: Civil Rights Trail
THE MOVEMENT Educational Resource Packet FREEDOM SCHOOL VOTER REGISTRATION Funded in part by The Riley Foundation 1 INTRODUCTION This packet has been designed to guide teachers as their students learn about Mississippi history, especially the events that surround Meridian. The Meridian Civil Rights Trail On June 17, 2014, the Meridian Civil Rights Trail was unveiled. Eighteen markers have been dedicated, sharing the stories of Meridian’s involvement in the struggle for Civil Rights. The trail acknowledges our painful past and celebrates the people who made a difference. How To Use These Curriculum Ideas The curriculum is the Freedom Summer School Curriculum (see resource page.) It was written with 3rd and 9th grade Mississippi History students in mind. The Meridian Civil Rights Trail section of visitmeridian.com is an excellent resource for the curriculum, and includes images, expanded content, maps, trail marker videos and more. Trail markers feature QR codes that, when scanned with an electronic tablet or smart phone, will lead directly to videos with expanded content and photographs. Teachers are encouraged to utilize these resources for supplemental media. Teachers may consider partnering with their music staff for the music section for this curriculum or allowing your 9th grade students to create lessons for 3rd grade students as part of their research. Acknowledgments: Special thanks to The Riley Foundation for providing Summer Work Program Internships Curriculum Design: Laura Huff and Jesica Estes, Interns Graphic Design within the Curriculum Packet: Jesica Estes, Intern Project Directors: Dede Mogollon, Executive Director of Lauderdale County Tourism; and Charlotte B. • PRESIDENT & CEO ORGANIZATION the $45 Million Mississippi Arts And
www.msarts.org PRESIDENT & CEO ORGANIZATION The $45 million Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience (MAEEX) will be a world-class facility highlighting Mississippi artists and celebrating the contributions of arts and entertainment entrepreneurs in every artistic discipline. Slated to open in late 2017/early 2018 during Mississippi’s bicentennial celebration in the heart of downtown Meridian, the MAEEX will be a statewide asset with a mission to recognize and honor legendary artists through hands-on exhibits that visually, auditorily, and kinesthetically educate, inform, and entertain every visitor. The MAEEX will be housed in an iconic, two-level structure consisting of over 58,000 square feet with 22,000 square feet devoted to visitor experiences. It is being planned and designed by local architect LPK with exhibits by nationally recognized Gallagher & Associates. The unique and informative exhibit design planned for the facility will educate and inspire visitors, having a tremendous impact on Mississippi’s economy. Exhibits are organized around five themes — the land, the home, the community, the church, and the people. Audio and video stories are planned to tell who, what, where, when, why, and how Mississippians have influenced the arts and the creative economy all over the world. The MAEEX is expected to draw over 150,000 people annually and it will encourage visitors to enhance their Mississippi experience and rich cultural history by exploring other new and existing museums, historic homes, and cultural activities throughout the state. A Hollywood-style Walk of Fame, unveiled in 2009, will make its way from the nearby Mississippi State University Riley Center to the MAEEX site.

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 meridianms.org We are finding our cadence as a city, marching to the same beat, and MOVING FORWARD AS A COMMUNITY. TABLE OF CONTENTS MAYOR’S LETTER 04 CITY COUNCIL 05 POLICE 11 FIRE 13 PUBLIC SAFETY & TRAINING 15 FINANCE & RECORDS 17 COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT 21 PUBLIC WORKS 23 PARKS & RECREATION 25 CITY OF MERIDIAN 2017 Annual Report 2 To the PEOPLE OF MERIDIAN The City of Meridian, like most cities across the country, has many challenges relating to poverty, aging infrastructure, and competition with online retail, but our opportunities are endless. We have been working diligently to improve the quality of life in our community by increasing our number of officers for public safety, working with numerous agencies for employment opportunities, and focusing on projects that will bring jobs and open the doors to the creative economy. In 2017, the Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience began to rise up on the corner of 22nd Avenue and Front Street, John Tampa and Ascent Hospitality crossed the final hurdles with the U.S. Department of the Interior to begin transforming the Threefoot Building into a hotel, and work began to improve our entranceway and streetscape on 22nd Avenue and the interstate. We are finding our cadence as a city, marching to the same beat, and moving forward as a community. Partnerships are becoming stronger, businesses are uniting, and our school systems and institutions of higher learning are collaborating now more than ever. The year 2018 will be a year of challenge and opportunity. We will be focusing on enhancing livability by fixing our sidewalks around downtown and along our main thoroughfares while continuing to make huge strides with our LED lighting initiative.
