The Hemel Hempstead School Issue 1102 th 5 July 2019 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hhs.herts.sch.uk I am sure that I read somewhere once that schools are supposed to quieten down over the last few months of the summer term. I am not sure who wrote that, but clearly they had never worked in a vibrant, busy secondary school. This week has been a rollercoaster of emotions. On Wednesday night three girls and boys athletics teams achieved a phenomenal legacy. For the third year running, both teams are District Athletic Champions. Personal and District records tumbled and the new PE office desk is groaning under the weight of trophies and shields. It has been an incredibly successful year for the PE department and staff and students should be very, very proud of themselves. Also on Wednesday our Senior Chamber Choir attended the National Music for Youth Festival as one of only seven choirs from the whole country to have been selected from regional competitions. They performed last, in the stunning Birmingham Symphony Hall, and were simply beautiful. I cannot wait to hear them again for what, as many are Year 13, will be their last performance together in tonight's Summer Music concert. Thursday saw 217 nervous but excited new faces sat in the main hall for me to welcome them to their new secondary school, as it was our Year 6 into Year 7 transfer day. We have heard such good things about this year group from all the Primary Schools we have visited over the last three months and are incredibly excited to be welcoming these young people into our community. On Monday Junior Windband spent the day at Adeyfield Academy and Year 7 enjoyed Mathematics Puzzle Day. Year 12 Politics students were at Parliament and the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Wednesday saw a group of very talented Year 8 mathematicians taking part in the Motor Maths Challenge at Watford Grammar School and on Thursday a group of Year 9 students were on a careers visit to Smith Detection Laboratories. As if that wasn’t busy enough this Sunday we look forward to welcoming hundreds of you to our famous Summer Fair and Dog Show. Bigger this year than ever and at just £1.00 for entry this is a great day out with the forecast set for sunshine all day!! Students worked in small groups with employers from local businesses who assisted them with CV writing and interview skills. This was organised with help from Connect Dacorum, a local charity which works to establish links between businesses and the community with both sides able to benefit by taking part in activities such as this. This was an interactive event with students receiving lots of helpful information and feedback directly from employers about things such as what they look for in a CV, covering letter and interview. We are very grateful to Connect Dacorum and all the employers for taking the time to support this valuable activity. Please see the link to the latest parent pack from Amazing Apprenticeships. This month it includes interview tips, how to find an LGBT+ inclusive employer, an interview with a Capgemini apprentice, staying well at work, how to find the right apprenticeship, and much more.
