Media Monitors is working towards empowering the media to hold public officials to account through effective news reporting. This source directory is a helpful tool for journalists to strengthen analysis and diversify perspectives on how the government is managing public resources. The organisation identified local public officials, economists, bankers, chartered accountants, financial experts and institutions whose expert opinion will be instrumental in unpacking and clarifying some of the complex and technical components of public resource governance so that members of the public can easily understand their meaning and be in a position to hold duty bearers accountable for their actions. Media Monitors is an independent Trust registered under the laws of Zimbabwe. The organisation has a 19 year track record of monitoring the media, existing between 2000 and 2016 as the Media Monitoring Project of Zimbabwe (MMPZ) and rebranded to Media Monitors in 2017. The organisation monitors 22 print and electronic media outlets as well as online media to promote evidence-based interventions for societal development, and support communications interventions by its partners. Its mission is “To analyse media and media content in the public interest while promoting ethical journalistic practice, free expression and access to information” and its vision “A Zimbabwe in which citizens are served by professional media outlets and have access to diverse sources of information.” To validate its mission the organisation monitors the Zimbabwean media space for the purpose of promoting responsible journalism and upholding fundamental liberties that include freedom of expression, freedom of the media, and access to information. Media Monitors has played a watchdog role in ensuring that these rights facilitate and promote other political and human rights through enhancing children rights, advocating for equal gender representation, and ensuring the media maintains and strengthens public dialogue to empower communities with information particularly marginalised communities.
