Alabama ranks among the top five states in the nation for the prevalence of diabetes, surpassing the national average. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the state and directly contributes to the incidence of heart disease and stroke. It is also the primary cause of kidney failure, non-trauma related limb amputations, and adult onset blindness. Adults with diabetes are two to four times more likely to die of heart disease or have a stroke than adults without diabetes. Left untreated or uncontrolled, diabetes can also lead to other complications, including nerve damage, dental disease, and pregnancy complications. Diabetes can directly cause acute life-threatening events such as diabetic coma and heart attack, and people with diabetes are more susceptible to many other illnesses such as influenza and pneumonia. Self-management of diabetes is the key to preventing complications. It is important that people living with diabetes learn how to manage the disease and maintain good health. This directory is intended to direct people living with diabetes to educational programs, support groups, and other resources that can help promote and sustain healthy behaviors that will help avert complications and improve the quality and length of life. Approximately 510,000 Alabamians have been diagnosed with diabetes. 2 Statewide Organizations and Programs Alabama Cooperative Extension System Alabama Primary Health Care Association Duncan Hall, Room 107A Celestine D.
