Humans are encroaching on animal environments, raising chances for pathogens to adapt from animals to people. An increasing share of the planet lives in megacities, heightening the likelihood of person-to-person transmission of pathogens. • To Approve Pfizer-Biontech Vaccine: UK Regulator 2 December 2020
No 'corners cut' to approve Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine: UK regulator 2 December 2020 the jab began in June after interim results from early trials by US giant Pfizer and German newcomer BioNTech became available. "If you climb a mountain, you prepare and prepare," she added. "On 10th November we were at base camp. When we got the final analysis we were ready for that last sprint that takes us to today." British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said earlier the country's state-run National Health Service will start inoculations with 800,000 doses "early next week". Britain's independent medicines regulator said on The mass vaccination programme will begin with Wednesday no "corners have been cut" in its elderly care home residents and frontline health recommendation to approve Pfizer-BioNTech's and social care staff. COVID-19 vaccine for general use. © 2020 AFP The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said it had used overlapping trials and "rolling reviews" since June to reach the determination in record time. "That doesn't mean any corners have been cut—none at all," June Raine, its chief executive, said at a press conference. "The safety of the public will always come first." Wednesday's announcement saw Britain become the first Western country to approve a COVID-19 vaccine for general use, with jabs set to begin for the most vulnerable from next week. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is one of several expected to gain regulatory approval in the coming weeks as similar reviews are completed.

  • Frontline Hospital Planning Guide for Special Pathogens
FRONTLINE HOSPITAL PLANNING GUIDE: SPECIAL PATHOGENS JUNE 2019 EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT Background: NYC Health + Hospitals is the largest municipal healthcare delivery system in the United States, providing essential inpatient, outpatient, and home-based services to more than one million New Yorkers every year in more than 70 locations across the city’s five boroughs. With our unique experiences in responding to emerging, re-emerging, and high consequence infectious disease incidents, including safely and successfully treating NYC’s single, confirmed case of Ebola virus disease and numerous persons under investigation, we understand first-hand the myriad impacts infectious disease threats and special pathogens events have on healthcare delivery. With the increasing demand for preparedness for and responses to the world’s emerging public health threats, this planning guide breaks new ground and leads the way as a distinctive domestic resource for healthcare delivery systems to customize their plans specific to their unique clinical, operational, and financial needs. Purpose and Audience: All hospitals must be prepared to identify and isolate a patient presenting with a suspected special pathogen infection (i.e., one that is particularly virulent and requires care processes and personal protective equipment beyond daily infection control practices) and inform internal and external stakeholders. This document provides high level planning guidance for a frontline hospital multidisciplinary team (e.g., emergency management, infection prevention and control, emergency department, inpatient care, safety, public relations, and infectious disease, depending on the resources and role of the facility in the community) to support planning and training for the provision of initial care to such patients while determining whether and when the patient will be transferred to another facility for further assessment and treatment.

Anna Frances MHRA [email protected] 10 South Colonnade Canary Wharf London E14 4PU United Kingdom www.gov.uk/mhra 7th May 2021 Dear Ms Frances, FOI 21/409 Thank you for your emails to MHRA customer services on 12th April 2021, where you asked questions relating to the COVID-19 vaccines, particularly inquiring on data on thromboembolic events and low platelets. In addition, you requested evidence of informed consent before people receive COVID-19 vaccines. Information on thromboembolic events and low platelets following a COVID-19 vaccine The MHRA has been proactively monitoring the safety of all approved COVID-19 vaccines for near real-time safety monitoring at the population level. A summary of Yellow Card reporting concerning the COVID-19 vaccines is published each week and can be found here. In this publication, you will find the specific information you have requested surrounding these case reports, including a breakdown of the age and sex of these patients and how many reports were fatal. The estimated number of first doses of COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca administered in the UK by 28th April was 22.6 million and 5.9 million estimated second doses, giving an overall case incidence of 10.5 per million doses. Taking into account the different numbers of patients vaccinated with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca in different age groups, there is a higher reported incidence rate in the younger adult age groups compared to the older groups. MHRA advises that this evolving evidence should be taken into account when considering the use of the vaccine.
