Spiritual Blind Spots Matthew 15:1-20 New Bibles – pg 974 Intro One of the hardest things about learning to drive is identifying blind spots. There are places around your vehicle that you just can’t see. More than 800,000 blind spot accidents a year, usually as a vehicle moves into this mysterious zone and disappears just as you go to change lanes. Drivers adapt by learning to turn their heads rather than rely on their mirrors. Car makers have adapted in several ways. Adding curved sections to mirrors that give a distorted view but at least you can see that there is a blob coming up on your side Radar sensors that alert you to vehicles in your blind spots with flashing lights or audible sounds. Some cars will even gently nudge you back if you are approaching a car in your blind spot. On other cars the steering wheel shakes a little to warn you. We’ll encounter some people in Matthew 15 with some serious spiritual blind spots. From our perspective looking in, it seems so obvious. But that’s the way blind spots work. Other can see it but we can’t see it ourselves. This blind spot had to do with elevating their religious tradition over God’s Word. They end up overlooking the miracle working Messiah and violating God’s commandments in their blindness. There’s a warning for each of us about the danger of raising the form of religious tradition over the substance of God’s Word. 1. A Person’s Words Will Be the Basis of Judgment There is a turning point in Matthew 12 as it becomes clear that the nation will not have Jesus Christ to be its king. The people of Israel will not accept Him as the Messiah, so they are not open to the establishment of a kingdom for the nation under Christ’s leadership. In the first section of Matthew 12, the leadership of the nation irrevocably set themselves to bring about the execution of Jesus Christ. “But the Pharisees went out and conspired against Him, as to how they might destroy Him” (Matt 12:14). They have come to the settled conviction that the only course open to them is to bring about the death of Christ. This decision occurs in the context of Christ’s performing many mighty miracles. Christ performed a great miracle of healing on the Sabbath Day in violation of their religious traditions, and this was a major issue with the leadership of Israel. -

May 2019 May Newsletter Church of the Good Shepherd Important Safety Update Hospitality and Safety are top priorities for us at The Good Shepherd. Unfortunately, we live in a dangerous world where indiscriminate violence is perpetrated against the unsuspecting innocent. While we welcome all people without judgment, we must also be aware that there are people who would take advantage of our openness to do us harm. We are a downtown church with a very open campus. We must remain vigilant and aware of our surroundings at all times, while maintaining God’s gift of hospitality. Please pay close attention to your surroundings, your belongings, and most importantly your children. Our children should never be left unattended while at church and should never go to the restroom alone. Over this past year we have made the following significant security improvements to our campus. 1) We have increased our security presence with a regular off-duty uniformed Corpus Christi Police officer on Sunday mornings, and other times during the week. 2) We have radios located in the chapel, the nursery, and with the Vestry person of the day, for communication with our police officer on Sunday. 3) We have electronic defibrillators and fire extinguishers mounted in Munds Hall and the Narthex of the Church. 4) The Safety Committee has been meeting with Ushers, Greeters, Vestry and Staff, on plans, procedures, and improvements that will help us to be better prepared for a variety of emergencies. Additionally, the Vestry has approved the installation of new hardware on all of our Sanctuary doors for the purpose of emergency exit functionality. -

And, what a glorious morning this is. I love you! And I love what it feels like when we gather together as sisters under the direction of the Lord. I love BYU Women’s Conference. The two years I served as conference chair embedded this conference in my heart forever. Now I know it’s spring, but to me it feels just like Christmas. Being here with you today is every bit as wonderful as opening gifts on Christmas morning! When we really think about it, our covenants are a gift—a gift from God designed to get us safely back home to Him. And what a gift that is! My dear sisters, despite any anguishing life situation we may presently be in, it can feel like Christmas every day if we truly receive the gift of our covenants every day. Clearly, Nephi had deep, joy-filled feelings about the gift of our covenants. His words are the theme for this year’s conference: “My soul delighteth in the covenants of the Lord.”1 My sisters, I pray that the Holy Ghost will be the True Teacher as we consider the gift of our covenants with the Lord. -

BIBLE STUDY MATTHEW 12 CRISIS In Matt. 12 we read the history of a series of crucial events in the life of Jesus. In every man's life there are decisive moments, times, and events on which the whole of his life hinges. This chapter presents us with the story of such a period in the life of Jesus. In it we see the orthodox Jewish religious leaders of the day coming to their final decision regarding Jesus--and that was rejection. It was not only rejection in the sense that they would have nothing to do with him; it was rejection in the sense that they concluded that nothing less than his complete elimination would be enough. Here in this chapter, we see the first definite steps, the end of which could be nothing other than the Cross. The characters are painted clear before us. On the one hand there are the Scribes and the Pharisees, the representatives of orthodox religion. We can see four stages in their increasing attitude of malignant hostility to Jesus. (i) In Matt. 12:1-8, the story of how the disciples plucked the ears of corn on the Sabbath day, we see growing suspicion. The Scribes and Pharisees regarded with growing suspicion a teacher who was prepared to allow his followers to disregard the details of the Sabbath Law. This was the kind of thing which could not be allowed to spread unchecked. (ii) In Matt. 12:9-14, the story of the healing of the man with the paralyzed hand on the Sabbath day, we see active and hostile investigation. -

Live Mercy: In Public Life A faith-sharing resource for small groups from Catholic Relief Services and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. It is designed to inform, inspire and prepare communities to show Christ’s compassionate love in public life through legislative advocacy. A community meeting organized by Catholic Relief Services in Ghana helps mobilize and sensitize people related to health issues, including increasing access to quality health care, improving nutrition and reducing malaria. The meetings are a component of CRS' project to help ensure that vulnerable populations, especially pregnant women, newborn babies and lactating mothers have increased access to health care. Topic 1: The sign of Jonah Verses: Matthew 12:38-42; 16:1-2, 4; Mark 8:11-12; Luke 11:16, 29-32 Chong Ho Yu Differences and similarities between Gospels Mark simply said the Pharisees came to question Jesus. Matthew’s account includes the Pharisees, teachers of the law, and the Sadducees. Luke’s account is the most ambiguous one. He said that “others” tested Jesus but it is unclear who they are. Mark and Luke bluntly said that the questioners tested Jesus. Matthew didn’t say so in the first instance. In Matthew, Jesus uses the phrase “a wicked and adulterous generation” but in Luke the word “adulterous” is omitted. Mark’s account that “Jesus sighed deeply” is not mentioned by Matthew or Luke. In Mark’s account Jesus’s reply is very brief. In Matthew’s and Luke’s stories Jesus made references to the Old Testament. But the sequences are different. In Matthew the order is: Jonah, the Nieveites, and the Queen of the South. In Luke the sequence is: Jonah, the Queen of the South, and the Ninevites. In Matthew Jesus called Jonah “the prophet” but in Luke Jesus omitted this title. Matthew interpreted the sign of Jonah: “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” However, Luke simply wrote, “For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.” In Luke’s narrative the sign of Jonah has one implication, whereas in Matthew there are double-implications: Jonah as a prophet calling for repentance and also a sign for the dead and resurrection of Jesus. -

Screen 1 “Another Remarkable Meal” Screen 2 Matthew 15:29-39 August 4, 2019 Last week, we discussed “A Remarkable ‘No’ and A Remarkable ‘Yes.’” The Remarkable No! was to the meaningless outward religious rituals of Judaism which included both the Oral Law (Mishnah) ritual hand washings and large swaths of the Book of Leviticus. In essence, Jesus declared all food “clean” in verses 10-20. Also see: Screen 3 1. Civil Laws – Deuteronomy 24:10-11 2. Ceremonial Laws – Leviticus 1:1-13 3. Moral Laws – Exodus 20:1-17 The Remarkable Yes! was to the unclean Canaanite woman, who came to Jesus after his leaving Galilee and going into Gentile territory, who asked him to heal her demon-possessed daughter in verses 21-28. While he is reluctant to do so in the beginning (originally he won’t even speak to her) her persistence, caused by her “great faith”, moved the Lord to give to her exactly what she wanted and “her daughter was healed instantly” (verse 28). “Great Faith” 1 2 3 Screen 4 This “great faith” lady appears to have gotten “the crumbs” (vs. 27). Matthew 15:29 Jesus went on from there and walked beside the Sea of Galilee. Screen 5 And he went up on the mountain and sat down there. “Jesus went on from there” – if we are not careful, we think Jesus has gone back immediately from the Tyre and Sidon district (vs. 21) to the more Jewish parts of 1 Galilee – back into Jewish territory - - but he has not! [I don’t like this but I’m doing it anyway.] Mark 7:31 (the parallel to today’s account) Then he returned from the Screen 6 region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. -
