Dear Readers of “Harbour Lights”,

QUALITY EDUCATION: IT’S ALL ABOUT LOVE

People say that JCI is an alternative type of institutes, where you learn how to be a better person. When we all first joined JCI, in spite of your religion, political preference, background, social status, we must recite and follow JCI Creed in our organization, locally, nationally and internationally. Years after years, you will find the implicit value of the creed when you unknowingly imply it into your daily life.

For me, quality education in 21st century should reflect the strength of human spirit - the ability to sacrifice, to be generous and think of the well-being of another. In JCI platform, you encounter with an overwhelming amount of interpersonal issues through which you learn about mankind at a really rapid pace.

Love and hate, hope and despair, respect and jealousy, trust and suspicion remind us of our common humanity. We are the generation that can spread all the good things around by one single click. We have a big responsibility for such an instant impact throughout the whole world. After we saw all different people worldwide through this powerful platform of young leaders, we become less arrogant and aggressive. The quality education here leads us to a calm and humble individual.

We hope to change ourselves in a good way and by achieving so, we must help other people to do the same. It’s a totally feasible formula which we have been practicing again and again in JCI. If you believe in our education, please join us and let this beautiful platform open your eyes.

We welcome you, great learners to join our JCI family! Teresa Poon National President JCI Hong Kong

TODAY’S TRAINING FOR TOMORROW’S SUCCESS

Leadership training development is among one of the areas that JCI values. As JCI members, we are always ready to advance ourselves, so we could become better young active citizens to serve the communities. Countless training opportunities are always at our finger tips to grasp.

Last year, when I was searching for relationship improvement courses, how to be a better employee at work, how to be a better mom and wife at home, how to be a better member at JCI family, the book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” popped in front of the screen. I wish I knew this author when I was a teen. Warren Buffett, the famous benevolent investor in the world, openly praised and showed gratitude to Dale Carnegie saying his course changed his life. What kind of magic course did Warren Buffet take?

Dale Carnegie was born in a poor farmer family in Missouri, USA in 1888. Carnegie developed and started offering his courses on effective speaking in 1910s, after coming to New York. Warren Buffett enrolled in Carnegie’s public speaking course when he was 19 years old. In one of the documentary, Buffett said “if I had not had done that, my whole life would have been different”. The key to Carnegie’s classes was getting people comfortable on their feet and talking, conquering their fears by discussing things that are most familiar to them.

Understanding Millennials

Taking people to heart is essential for keeping good relationship. Kenny Chan, the Marketing Manager of Dale Carnegie Training Hong Kong, shared people like to be heard, understood, and cared. Millennials would like to contribute to the society to make their life meaningful and colorful. The term ‘generation gap’ is not valid. Many miscommunications between generations are avoidable. Millennials want attention and respect from others. Transparency and justification are important for millennials at work. Listen, not enough! Listen with patience, not enough either! Listen with your heart and soul! Through training, we discover our weakness, Through training, we find our needs, Through training, we develop our strengths, Through training, we cultivate our seeds!

The desire and ability to quickly grow and adapt one’s skills to remain employable throughout their working life.

The vast majority of Millennials—93%—see ongoing skills development as an important part of their future careers. They would pay for it personally and give up their own time to do it. Only 7% of Millennials have no interest in training.

There are however, varying degrees of desire, capability and commitment to learning. Higher learnability correlates strongly with career success—being more educated, better prepared for employment and higher paid. What’s more, people with high learnability tend to continue learning, so the benefits grow over time.

In 2016, Dr Yeung conducted a survey on sustainable skills development on 95 teenagers. A questionnaire was designed to explore the perceptions of college students on sustainable skill development. It consisted of 31 items on sustainable skill and some questions about respondent's demographic information. The items relating to sustainable skill were referenced from the literatures in sustainable skill and the inputs of the participants who had presented their paper on the same topic in an UNESEO APEID conference.

Dalian Trip – A Relaxing and Romantic Tour The Dalian trip was held on 14-17 September successfully with 38 senior members and their family members joining. The city is best visited in the spring and autumn. The weather was pleasant and perfect, which was a good reason to travel there in Sept.

Though the 4-day trip was short, all participants visited various scenic and stunning attractions such as Bangchuidao, Xinghai Square, Tiger Beach, Beach Road, Fisherman’s Wharf, Russian Street, Museum of Lushun, Baiyunshan Pagoda, Lushun Port withan excellent natural harbour, andthe full view of beautiful coastline scenery at North Bridge (also known as Lover Bridge). It was anunforgettable experience to havetasted a lot of signature yummy big freshseafood like black sea urchin and sea cucumber with costs much lower than those in HK.

The DIY in Dumpling Museum was one of the highlights of the trip. All participants found lots of fun in the dumpling making process. The taste of the filling was delicious and it was amazing to find that all dumplings were eaten up.

Another highlight was the birthday celebration of JCI Honorary Advisor Sonny, NAC Chairman Jacob, NAC Advisor Samand, and some senior members on the 2nd evening with tons of wines being consumed.

All participants found that Dalian is a clean nice city. They returned home with good impression of the place and a happy memory of the trip.

National Convention - Alumni Morning Trip to Chi Lin Nunnery About 20 senior members joined the Alumni Morning Trip to Chi Lin Nunnery arranged by the 52nd National Convention Organizing Committee. The participants were taught to use their 7 senses to tour the Nunnery.

Firstly, by using their eyes, they have an overall view of the layout of the Nunnery, including the main building and the scenic garden, built in the Tang- Dynasty-style. They listened to the sound of waterfalls; tasted the waters of windmills; smelt the fragrance of different varieties of flowers and felt the calmness of the garden and the solemness of the monastery. Finally, their souls were inspired and cleaned.

Participants were struck by the traditional Chinese architectural techniques of using special interlocking systems cut into the wood to hold them in place.

The trip was enjoyable and rewarding though it lasted only for 2 hours.

National Convention – Alumni Luncheon The Alumni Luncheon was held on 24 September at the BP International Hotel Gordon Wu Hall. It was our honour to have National President Teresa, National Immediate Past President Brian, Past National Presidents, Past NAC Chairmen and nearly 100 Alumni Club members attending the event. All Senior Members cherished the opportunity to get together and enjoy the sumptuous buffet lunch.

A birthday celebration session was held to convey best wishes to the September birthday stars. And finally, the advertising time came when the ardent Executive Committee members promoted the upcoming events organized in the last quarter of the year.

National Convention – Graduation Ceremony & Senatorship Presentation This year, 15 members from 11 Chapters graduated. They were invited on stage to receive the certificates and souvenirs presented by NAC Chairman Jacob during the Graduation Ceremony. Congratulations to all Baby Senior Members and wish them all the best in their new journey of being senior members in our JC family.

It was also a lovely moment to cheer for the achievement of NAC Executive Committee members Victor Chan, Ivan Han and Alvina Lam when they were conferred the honor of Senatorship. Congratulations to the 3 Baby Senators!

Last but not least, our heartfelt congratulations to our NAC Chairman Jacob Chan for winning "The Most Outstanding Senator Award".
