2018 WASHINGTON CAPITALS DEVELOPMENT CAMP Kettler Capitals Iceplex • Arlington, Va. June 26 – June 30, 2018 Capitals Development Camp Notes The Washington Capitals will host their 2018 Prospect Development Camp CAMP SCHEDULE from June 26 to June 30, 2018 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. All on-ice sessions are free and open to the public. Tuesday, June 26 9 a.m.: Defense on ice (Public rink) Capitals development camp is an annual, week-long summer session with 9 a.m.: Forwards on ice (Capitals rink) on- and off-ice workouts designed to help Capitals prospects improve their 2:15 p.m.: Goalies on ice (Capitals rink) games and allow the Capitals to evaluate their progress. This is the 12th 3 p.m.: All players on ice (Capitals rink) consecutive year that the camp is being held at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. 4 p.m.: Media availability Past development camps have been held in Odenton, Md., and Hershey, 6:30 p.m.: Washington Capitals Alumni Pa. Summer Classic Attendees include Capitals prospects who are under contract and recent Wednesday, June 27 Capitals draft picks who have not been signed yet. In addition, several 11 a.m.: On-ice testing (Public rink) undrafted and free agent amateur players will be in attendance. 11 a.m.: Goalies on ice (Capitals rink) 12 p.m.: All players on ice (Capitals rink) 1 p.m.: Media availability The Capitals will host Caps Fan Fest on Saturday, June 30. This year’s Fan 5 p.m.: All players at Kids Clinic Fest will feature the team’s annual equipment sale, a public skate and a photo opportunity with the Stanley Cup. Additionally, the Washington Thursday, June 28 Capitals Alumni Association will host an Alumni Summer Classic Game on 9:15 a.m.: Defense and goalies on ice Tuesday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. The event is free (Capitals rink) and open to the general public. 9:15 a.m.: Forwards on ice (Public rink) 10 a.m.: All players on ice (Capitals rink) 4 p.m.: 3-on-3 Tournament Capitals development camp will conclude on Saturday with an intrasquad 5:15 p.m.: Media availability scrimmage at 10 a.m. The game will be streamed live on MonumentalSportsNetwork.com. [email protected] Washington Capitals 2018 Development Camp Guide Camp Storylines Roll Call – All seven draft picks from the Capitals 2018 Draft will attend this year’s development camp. The Capitals selected defenseman Alexander Alexeyev (31st overall), defenseman Martin Fehervary (46th overall), right wing Kody Clark (47th overall), right wing Riley Sutter (93rd overall), goaltender Mitchell Gibson (124th overall), defenseman Alex Kannok-Leipert (177th overall) and center Eric Florchuk (217th overall) in the 2018 NHL Draft, held June 22nd and 23rd at American Airlines Center in Dallas. Quick Studies – Shane Gersich attended last summer’s development camp and appeared in three games with the Capitals in 2017-18. Gersich made his NHL debut on March 28 versus the New York Rangers and recorded an assist in his third career game on April 7 against New Jersey. In addition, Gersich appeared in two postseason games. Eight players who attended the 2017 development camp played for Washington’s AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, during the 2017-18 regular season (Kristofers Bindulis, Hampus Gustafsson, Connor Hobbs, Lucas Johansen, Tim McGauley, Mason Mitchell, Jonas Siegenthaler, Colby Williams). Two players (Adam Carlson, Stephen Collins) played for Washington’s ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays, in 2017-18. Veteran Presence – Brian Pinho will be participating in his sixth development camp this year (2013-18). Pinho, who was selected by the Capitals in the sixth round, 174th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft, registered 32 points (12g, 20a) in 40 games with Providence College (NCAA) in 2017-18. Pinho tied a career high in goals with the Friars last season and finished second on the team in scoring. Pinho, who served as captain last season, was awarded the team’s Lou Lamoriello Award (Team MVP) for the second-straight season, earned the Hockey East’s Best Defensive Forward Award and the Frank Jones Award as New England’s Best Defensive Forward. Immediate Impact – All four draft picks from the Capitals 2017 NHL Draft will attend this year’s development camp. Tobias Geisser, Washington’s fourth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, registered six points (2g, 4a) in 38 games with EV Zug in in the National League (Swiss) in 2017-18. The 6’4”, 205-pound defensemen also represented Switzerland in the 2018 World Junior Championship, skating in five games. Geisser was named a top-three player on Switzerland during the tournament. Sebastian Walfridsson, the Capitals’ fifth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, registered three points (0g, 3a) in 31 games with Modo (Sweden) and four points (2g, 2a) in 24 games with Modo Jr. (Sweden-Jr.) in 2017-18, and ranked fourth on Modo Jr. in plus/minus (+12) and penalty minutes (36). The 6’0’, 194-pound defenseman represented Sweden in seven games between Sweden's U19 and U20 teams during the 2017-18 season. Washington’s 2017 sixth-round pick Benton Maass recorded 17 points (4g, 13a) in 36 games with the University of New Hampshire last season. In his 2017- 18 freshman season, Maass’ 17 points ranked third among freshman at New Hampshire, and Maass ranked third on the team in blocked shots (44). Kristian Marthinsen registered 31 points (23g, 8a) in 23 games with Almtuna's junior team (Sweden) during the 2017-18 season, ranking first on the team in goals and second in points. The 6'0", 192-pound left wing also represented Norway in the 2018 World Junior Championship Division 1B, appearing in five games. Homegrown – Sixteen players who played for the Capitals in 2017-18 were originally drafted by Washington (Nicklas Backstrom, Madison Bowey, Travis Boyd, Andre Burakovsky, John Carlson, Christian Djoos, Shane Gersich, Philipp Grubauer, Braden Holtby, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, Alex Ovechkin, Chandler Stephenson, Jakub Vrana, Nathan Walker and Tom Wilson). Capitals draftees accounted for 66.8% of the team’s goals, 69.4% of the team’s assists and 68.4% of the team’s points from last season. Homecoming – Development camp attendee Patrick Giles is a native of Chevy Chase, Md. In 62 games with the U.S. National U18 Team “A”, Giles recorded 22 points (11g, 11a) and represented the United States at the 2018 U18 World Junior Championship, recording two points (1g, 1a) in seven games. Age Differential – Alex Kannok-Leipert (born July 20, 2000), drafted by Washington in the sixth round, 177th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft, is the youngest player attending this year’s development camp and holds the distinction of being the first Capitals draft pick to be born in the 21st century. Mason Mitchell (born June 13, 1994) is the oldest. Washington Capitals 2018 Development Camp Guide Alex Alexeyev Defenseman (27) Drafted by WSH in the first round, 31stt overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft Alexeyev was ranked ninth overall among North American defensemen by NHL Central Scouting. He led Red Deer defensemen with 37 points (7g, 30a) and recorded 29 penalty minutes in 45 games. Alexeyev also added another five points (2g, 3a) in three playoff games. Ryan Barrow Forward (94) Free Agent Barrow earned nine points (4g, 5a) in 39 games with the University of Denver (NCAA) this past season. He also was a NCAA (NCHC) champion. The 6’2’’, 170-pound forward is from Cochrane, Alb. Kris Bindulis Defenseman (84) Free Agent Bindulis registered one assist in 12 games with the Hershey Bears this past season. He also recorded 15 points (4g, 11a) with the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL) in 34 games. Bindulis also represented Latvia internationally at the culmination of the season. Kody Clark Right Wing (71) Drafted by WSH in the second round, 47th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft Clark ranked 19th overall among North American forwards by NHL Central Scouting. He registered 39 points (18g, 21a) in 56 games with the Ottawa 67s of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) last season. Clark ranked fifth on the team in points and goals and sixth in assists. Martin Fehervary Defenseman (42) Drafted by WSH in the second round, 46th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft Fehervary was ranked sixth overall among European defensemen by NHL Central Scouting. He registered seven points (1g, 6 assists) in 42 games with IK Oskarshamn in HockeyAllsvenskan (SWE-2) last season. Eric Florchuk Center (58) Drafted by WSH in the seventh round, 217th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft Florchuk had 28 points (7g, 21a) with the Victoria Royals (WHL) in 43 games in the 2017-18 season. He finished the season with the Saskatoon Blades (WHL), where he registered 21 points (9g, 12a) in 28 games.
