Fighters of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces raised their yellow flag in Baghouz, the remote riverside village where militants of a variety of nationalities made a desperate, dramatic last stand. The SDF’s victory capped a deadly six-month operation against the final remnants of the caliphate which once stretched across a vast swathe of Iraq and Syria, and held seven million people in its sway. World leaders hailed the victory as a major landmark in the fight against IS and its ideology, but warned that the group that spurred a spate of global terror attacks was far from defeated. “Syrian Democratic Forces declare total elimination of so-called caliphate and 100 percent territorial defeat of ISIS,” spokesman Mustefa Bali said in a statement, using another acronym for IS. In Al-Omar, an oilfield used by the SDF as a staging base, fighters in their best fatigues laid down their weapons and broke into song and dance. -

This curtailment of travel is required so that the Pompeo family may attend a family funeral,” US Ambassador to Kuwait Lawrence Silverman said in a statement. “The secretary very much looks forward to visiting Kuwait to conduct the United States-Kuwait Strategic Dialogue with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah in the near future. Secretary Pompeo places a high priority on our strategic dialogue, which commits the United States and Kuwait to increased cooperation in the areas of greatest practical benefit to our governments and our peoples,” the statement added. During his visit to Saudi Arabia yesterday, Pompeo faced a tough balancing act as he pressed the Saudi crown prince over critic Jamal Khashoggi’s murder while shoring up strategic ties with Riyadh. -

Police had apprehended the housemaid’s female employer after the Ethiopian woman arrived dead at Jahra Hospital on Friday. The woman was questioned after head injuries and beat marks were noticed on the victim’s body. Investigations revealed yesterday that the perpetrator was the woman’s 15-year-old son. According to investigators, the boy brutal- ly attacked the maid under the pretext that she left the family’s house without permission. The circumstances behind the maid’s escape and return to her employer’s house are still unknown. The teen’s mother is also expected to face charges for covering up the crime. Meanwhile, a security source said vice detectives raided a jakhour (animal pen) where homosexual parties for both genders were being organized. The source said that 32 men and women were arrested in the pen in Kabd. Liquor and women’s clothing were also confiscated. Separately, two more suspects - a Syrian and a Kuwaiti - were arrested in connection with an armed robbery in which two Indian security guards were killed at the vegetable market in Sulaibiya last month. -
