Why Plant Trees? Trees in an urban area increase quality of life by: Air quality and cleansing - A typical person uses 386 lb. of oxygen per year. A healthy 32 ft. tall ash tree can produce about 260 lb. of oxygen annually. Two of these trees would supply the oxygen needs of a person each year! Improved water quality - The canopy of a street tree intercepts rain, reducing the amount of water that will fall on pavement and then be removed by a storm water system. Heating & Cooling Costs - A mature tree canopy reduces air temperatures by about 5 to 10° F, influencing the internal temperatures of nearby buildings. Trees divert wind in the winter and increase winter-time temperatures. Increased home sales prices - When homes with equivalent features are evaluated, a 6% increase to the value is associated with nearby trees. Soil Stabilization - Tree roots stabilize soil, helping to minimize erosion. -

TESTIMONY of RANDY MOORE, REGIONAL FORESTER PACIFIC SOUTHWEST REGION UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE—FOREST SERVICE BEFORE THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE ON OVERSIGHT AND REFORM—SUBCOMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT August 20, 2019 Concerning WILDFIRE RESPONSE AND RECOVERY EFFORTS IN CALIFORNIA Chairman Rouda, Ranking Member and Members of the Subcommittee, thank you for the opportunity to appear before you today to discuss wildfire response and recovery efforts in California. My testimony today will focus on the 2017-2018 fire seasons, as well as the forecasted 2019 wildfire activity this summer and fall. I will also provide an overview of the Forest Service’s wildfire mitigation strategies, including ways the Forest Service is working with its many partners to improve forest conditions and help communities prepare for wildfire. 2017 AND 2018 WILDIRES AND RELATED RECOVERY EFFORTS In the past two years, California has experienced the deadliest and most destructive wildfires in its recorded history. More than 17,000 wildfires burned over three million acres across all land ownerships, which is almost three percent of California’s land mass. These fires tragically killed 146 people, burned down tens of thousands of homes and businesses and destroyed billions of dollars of property and infrastructure. In California alone, the Forest Service spent $860 million on fire suppression in 2017 and 2018. In 2017, wind-driven fires in Napa and neighboring counties in Northern California tragically claimed more than 40 lives, burned over 245,000 acres, destroyed approximately 8,900 structures and had over 11,000 firefighters assigned. In Southern California, the Thomas Fire burned over 280,000 acres, destroying over 1,000 structures and forced approximately 100,000 people to evacuate. -

Research Note Environmental effects of stump and root harvesting Andy Moffat, Tom Nisbet and Bruce Nicoll September 2011 The removal of tree stumps and coarse roots from felling sites as a source of woody biomass for bioenergy generation is well established in parts of Europe, and interest has been expressed in replicating this practice in some regions of the UK. Overseas research shows that stump harvesting can pose a risk to sustainable forest management, unless care is taken in site selection and operational practice. Poor practice can lead to detrimental effects on soil structure, increasing the risk of soil erosion, and depletes soil nutrient and carbon capital. Stump and root harvesting can also have impacts on woodland biodiversity, archaeological heritage and tree health. This Research Note offers a synthesis of available evidence on the effects of stump harvesting, drawn from largely overseas sources but critically considered for their applicability to British conditions. The overall environmental effects of stump harvesting on forest sites in the UK, and the relative magnitude of these effects compared with conventional restock site preparation, are under ongoing investigation. The results will be used to develop more definitive guidance. Preliminary guidance published by Forest Research sets out how the risks of potential damaging effects can be minimised, notably by careful assessment of site suitability and location of activities on low risk sites. It is recommended that this is used to guide the planning and location of stump and root harvesting operations in Britain. Minnesota SWCD Forestry Association Tree Handbook Dear Tree Planter. With headlines reporting the continuing deforestation of the tropical rain forest, one may ask the question: Are America’s forests in danger of disappearing? Because people such as yourself practice reforestation, our forested acres are actually growing in size. About one-third of the United States, or 731 million acres is covered with trees. That’s about 70 percent of the forest that existed when Columbus discovered America. Almost one third of this is set aside in permanent parks and wilderness areas. Minnesotans’ have planted an average of 12 million trees annually; enough trees to cover over 15,000 acres per year. Good land stewards are planting trees for many good reasons. The results of their efforts can be seen in reduced soil erosion, improved air and water quality, healthy forest industries, enhanced wildlife habitat and generally a more attractive surrounding for us to live in. Aspen has become the most prominent tree in Minnesota’s forests. After clearcutting, aspen regenerates readily by sprouting from its root system or by drifting seeds onto disturbed sites. Most of the other major species in Minnesota need some help from tree planters to ensure that they make up a part of the new forest. The following pages will help explain how to plant and care for a tree seedling. There is a section on the general characteristics and planting requirements of the tree and shrub species commonly planted for conservation purposes in Minnesota. The professionals working in conservation throughout Minnesota thank you for planting, nurturing and wisely using one of Minnesota’s greatest treasures its renewable trees. -

Identification of Conifer Trees in Iowa This publication is designed to help identify the most common trees found in Iowa. It is based on vegetative characteristics including leaves, fruit, and bark. It is neither complete nor without possible oversights. Separate species are grouped by similar characteristics, mainly based on type and arrangement of leaves. These groups are; awl- or scale- like needles; single needles, flattened with rounded tips; single needles, square in cross section, with pointed tips; and needles in bundles or fasticles of two or more. Remember, vegetative character- istics are quite variable; use more than one specimen for comparison. Awl- or scale-like needles Juniperus Virginiana Eastern Red Cedar Leaves are dark green; leaves are both awl- and scale-like; cone is dark blue and berry-like. Thuja occidentalis Northern White Cedar Leaves are flattened and only of the scale type; cones have 4-6 scales; foliage is light green. Juniperus communis Common Juniper Leaves are awl shaped; cone is dark blue and berry-like.
