BACKGROUND: Last year Johnny Miller was PGA Player of the Year with 8 tournament victories, which is the first time for anyone in a decade (Palmer last to do so). He won more than $400, 000 in prize money last year, which was $100, 000+ more than anyone else. He's won first two tourna ments so far this year (Pheonix Open, Jan. 12 and Dean Martin- Tucson Open, Jan. 18). He won the first three last year, and goes into the Crosby at Pebble Beach, Jan. 23-26, as defending champion. He and his wife, Linda, have a son, John, age 5, and two daughters, Kelly, age 3 and Casey, age 6 months. TOPICS OF DISCUSSION: 1. Congratulations on your win in Tucson, and good luck at the Crosby. 2. If you win the Crosby, are you going to rest for a while? (He'll probably want to lay out the Hawaiian Open, Jan. 31-Feb. 2 to get in shape for the Bob Hope Desert Classic, Feb. 5-9, which he is really looking forward to. If he were to play and win at both Crosby and Hawaiian Open, it would mean four straight wins--an unpre cedented achievement. ) DATE OF SUBMISSION: • PEBBLE BEACH has J.~lashington Star-llrms been kind to Nicklaus over the years. • GREG NORMAN Wednesday, December 10, 2014
PRE-TOURNAMENT INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT: GREG NORMAN Wednesday, December 10, 2014 DAVE SENKO: Well, we would like to welcome our host, Greg Norman. Greg, this is 26 years for your event, 14 years in Naples. A couple changes this year. Maybe you could just get us started, talk about the new format, a little bit of a course change as well as Fox's debut as broadcasting golf. GREG NORMAN: Absolutely. First of all, I said it when we had the 25th anniversary last year that I never anticipated running this tournament for 25 years. Now we're into 26 and it seems like we're just getting better and better every year. There's been the golf course changes. Fortunately for us we had a 36-hole golf course to be able to work with. The agronomy department, we all know there was a disease got into the greens so we made the adjustments very, very quickly. Quite honestly, as far as I was concerned, I always wanted to use -- I'm going to get them all mixed up -- the black course in the beginning because I really thought it was a better golf course to play. So, you know, we made the adjustments very, very quickly. I think the players really like the new golf course, the layout of the golf course. So there really has been sort of a seamless transition, quite honestly. And the third one with Fox, extremely excited about it, I really am. There's a lot of things I've done in my life and there's a lot of opportunities I've had to do new things in life but this is one that I'm extremely excited about.

  • Heber Valley, UT
Heber Valley, UT Although it will always be a ski town first and foremost, and will forever be known as an Olympic venue (2002 Winter Games) Park City, Utah is also an amazing golf destination for the traveling golfer. Park City, UT Need proof? The subject of this travelogue won’t even be Park City proper, but instead the five championship courses, comprising ninety holes of entertaining golf, found some fifteen miles east of town in the sleepy community of Midway, Utah. Besides the perfect summer weather and scenic alpine panoramas, one of the great attributes of this region is the accessibility from the airport hub in Salt Lake City. While a quick drive in a National Rental Car from the airport to Park City is but forty minutes, the extra twenty minutes traveling east on Highway 40 is well worth the effort. The Homestead Resort in Midway is undoubtedly best known for its infamous Crater. This is a 10,000 year old geothermal spring, hidden within a 55 foot tall beehive shaped limestone rock. The Crater is the only warm weather scuba destination in the US; the mineral water stays a constant 90—96 degrees. Luckily the summertime temperatures on the nearby Crater Springs course almost never get that high. Crater Springs Golf Course Crater Springs is an amalgamation of doglegs, narrow fairways, streams, ponds and more than a few road crossings. It’s a bit of a crazy quilt, meandering as it does back and forth through a variety of residential neighborhoods. It’s a pleasant enough resort course, but many players will gravitate towards Soldier Hollow.
