Hence, familiarity with the theory would be an advantage for the designers to analyse, learn from and improve the exiting design as well as to create a more responsible built environment in future. However, the theory of space syntax has not yet been adequately integrated into the curriculum of many design schools. This paper presents an analysis of opportunities and challenges of the application of space syntax in the undergraduate architectural design curriculum. The goal of this paper is to anticipate these challenges and support a curriculum planning strategy for the matter. For this purpose, this paper first provides a brief review of previous studies and efforts to integrate space syntax into the design pedagogy. Then, it pursues a qualitative approach to identify different aspects of the relevance of space syntax within the design pedagogy. At the end, the paper presents our approach to address the considerations arisen in the literature review and introduces some of the steps planned for familiarising architectural design students at the University of South Australia. However, the space syntax's representation oversimplifies multi-level vertical connections. The more recent segment and angular approaches to space syntax remain un-operationalizable in three-dimensional space. The two-dimensional axial-map and segment map line representations are reviewed to determine their extension to three-dimensional space line representation. Using an extreme case study research strategy, four representations of a large scale complex multi-level outdoor and indoor built environment are tested against observed pedestrian movement patterns N = 17,307. Association with the movement patterns increases steadily as the representation increases toward high three-dimensional space level of definition and completeness. A novel hybrid angular-Euclidean analysis was used for the objective description of three-dimensional built environment complexity. The results suggest that pedestrian wayfinding and movement pattern research in a multi-level built environment should include interdependent outdoor and indoor, and use full three- dimensional line representation. -

DAJ1 Odborná jazyková příprava pro DSP - Academic Writing in Englis Tomáš Tencer: 64281 Space Syntax and/in Archaeology The following paper has been written for the purpose of the „DAJ1 Odborná jazyková příprava pro DSP - Academic Writing in English“, however its parts will be used in my doctoral thesis in a chapters focusing on introduction, methodology and state-of-the-art Space syntax method and applications. The overall structure of this paper takes the form of several interconnected parts. In the first section the historical development of the Space Syntax method is presented. The introduction to the method will be explained in the second part and the basic theoretical framework will be presented together with terminology. The third part will give an overview of the most notable application of Space Syntax methods in historical studies with a focus on archaeology. The last section of this paper will serve as a conclusion of this text. Turner iv Contents Preface These proceedings cover the Workshop on New Developments in Space Syntax Software held on 12th June 2007 at the 6th International Space Syntax Symposium, Istanbul Technical University. This is the ¯rst time that the New Developments workshop has its own proceedings. In the past the workshop has tended to focus on just one or two pieces of software, usually from the historic heart of space syntax research, the Bartlett at UCL. This has led to undue prominence of the Bartlett in a ¯eld where there is an increasing number of contributions from the world over. These proceedings have managed to catch a few of the latest programs written to perform space syntax analysis, or at least, programs to measure relationships between occupiable space, whatever form that may take. The ¯rst paper, Markhede and Miranda's SPOT tool, focuses on just that phrase `occupiable space'. -

Copyright © by Giles Spence Morrow 2009 All rights reserved Abstract: This thesis addresses the archaeological application of spatial syntax analysis to ritual and domestic architecture, focusing on the pre-Inka state of Tiwanaku in the highlands of South America. The pan- Andean tradition of ceremonial architecture known as the Sunken-Court is examined from both hermeneutic and quantitative perspectives. To test the practicality of the quantitative methods explored, topographic and geophysical prospection techniques were used to detect and visualize buried ritual and domestic architecture at the site of a non-elite residential sector of Tiwanaku known as Mollo Kontu. The potential of an archaeological methodology that combines geophysical and quantitative spatial analyses is then critically assessed in light of the survey results, suggesting the need for more nuanced qualitative approaches to the analysis of the ancient built environment. Résumé Cette thèse porte sur l’application d’une analyse spatial syntaxique sur l’architecture rituelle et domestique, avec focus sur l’état pré-Inka de Tiwanaku dans les hautes terres de l’Amérique du Sud. La tradition pan-Andine d’architecture cérémoniale connu sous le nom de Temple Semi-Souterrain est examinée avec une perspective herméneutique et quantitative. Pour tester la faisabilité des méthodes quantitatives explorées, des techniques de prospection topographiques et géophysiques ont été utilisées pour détecter et visualiser l’architecture rituelle et domestique enfouie dans une aire résidentielle non-élite de Tiwanaku, nommée Mollo Kontu.
