Como was founded by the Romans in 196 B.C. Tours on the site of a Celtic village. A Hotel possession of the powerful duchy of Milan in the middle-ages, it was well known in Italy and abroad for the skill of its builders and above all for the production of and trade in silk. There are many artistic sites to see in the town. Among them are the Church of Sant'Abbondio of the 11th century, and the Basilica of San Fedele. The heart of the old town is the Piazza del Duomo with its Cathedral (Duomo), one of the most beautiful churches in Lombardy. The attractive walk along Lungo Lario takes the visitor to the Tempio Voltiano, where the mementos and relics of Alessandro Volta (1745-1827), the inventor of the battery, are conserved. In alternative to the historical part, we would suggest the “Como Razionalista” situated outside the medieval walls of the city where you could appreciate the artworks of the famous architect Giuseppe Terragni. Giuseppe Terragni (April 18, 1904 - July 19, 1943) was an Italian architect who worked primarily under the fascist regime of Mussolini and pioneered the Italian modern movement under the rubric of Rationalism. One of his more famous works is the Casa del Fascio which was begun in 1932 and completed in 1936; it was originally built in accordance with the International Style of architecture in Como. » prezzi » estesioni Masviaggi in&out Juvara, 10 - 22100 Como - Italy tel +39 031 264870 fax +39 031 2759195 powered by tommstudio http://www.masviaggi.com/italiano/listadati.asp?name=Como city tour 21/12/2007.

When La Biennale di Venezia Meets History does not just convey the content that visitors to the Central Pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale will encounter, but also a vision. Disquiet serves as a driving force behind research, which requires dialogue to verify its theories and needs history to absorb knowledge. This is what La Biennale does and will continue to do as it seeks to reinforce a methodology that creates even stronger bonds between its own disciplines. There are six Muses at the Biennale: Art, Architecture, Cinema, Theatre, Music and Dance, given a voice through the great events that fill Venice and the world every year. There are the places that serve as venues for all of La Biennale’s activities: the Giardini, the Arsenale, the Palazzo del Cinema and other cinemas on the Lido, the theatres, the city of Venice itself.

  • Architecture and Materials in the First Half of the 20Th Century in Italy
    G. Bernardo & L. Palmero Iglesias, Int. J. of Herit. Archit., Vol. 1, No. 4 (2017) 593–607 ARCHITECTURE AND MatERIALS IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY IN ItaLY G. BERNARDO1 & L. PALMERO IGLESIAS2 1Department of European and Mediterranean Cultures, University of Basilicata, Italy. 2Department of Architectural Constructions, Technical University of Valencia, Spain. ABSTRACT The architecture and the materials used in the constructions have always been the symbol of the culture and progress of a people. Each historical period can be described in its complexity through the architectural heritage. The built environment is really an extraordinary testimony of the creativity and intelligence of humankind, of its enormous possibilities but also of its limitations as well as of a certain sensitivity and world view. This paper illustrates a multidisciplinary and historical-critical study of the main architectural trends in Italy in the first half of the 20th century: from the Futurism of the early 20th century to the rationalism of the fascist period. The work is focused on the role of the architecture in the socio-economic development of a country and on the complex relation- ship between materials innovation and architecture, which originates even today the debate between modernity and tradition. The results highlight the outstanding importance in the evolution of the different ways of conceiving architecture. It can be just a Utopia as in the Futuristic architecture, a drive towards a better world which will be able to meet the growing needs of an ever-changing world, or rise to fulfil the function of science and art through the innovative use of new materials and manufacturing technologies.

  • Liquid Monumentality: a Search for Meaning
Liquid Monumentality: A Search for Meaning by David Takacs A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Architecture Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2011 © David Takacs 2011 AUTHOR’S DECLARATION I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including my required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made available electronically to the public. ii ABSTRACT Contemporary architecture suffers from an acute malaise: it has lost its sense of meaning, and in turn, its sense of significance. In our world of economy and utility—the liquid world—architecture can only allude to a higher purpose, a feigned declaration of its inability to contend with the current state. Yet this was not always the case. For thousands of years everything from the minutest of details to the greatest of narratives found their expression in architecture, and specifically, in a culture’s understanding and application of monumentality. The monument embodied the spirit of its times, and in its near-immortality provided a refuge for the loftiest of hopes and dreams. While it may appear that words like immortality and spirit are at odds with the ceaseless and constant change of the globalized world, change is not a new concept of our era. Since the beginning of history monumental architecture tempered its solidity with an implicit appreciation for the transience it sought to overcome. Liquid Monumentality reconstructs this dialectic of permanence and change in an attempt to answer one question: is the monumental still relevant in our liquid age? iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I initially wrote a few fairly standard paragraphs for my “acknowledgements”.

They are part of a wider project, Rumours of a New Planet, which I have undertaken over the last two years, following an invitation from Collective to devise an alternative way to access the potentialities present in a site rich in historical and associative narratives. My approach – both in this book and in the wider project – has been to consider Calton Hill as a central node in a network of ideas, events, people and spaces. As such, the essays in this book are not about Calton Hill, but instead represent a view from it, or more specifically, a view from a building positioned on its peak: the City Observatory.

  • In Fascist Italy
fascism 7 (2018) 45-79 brill.com/fasc Futures Made Present: Architecture, Monument, and the Battle for the ‘Third Way’ in Fascist Italy Aristotle Kallis Keele University [email protected] Abstract During the late 1920s and 1930s, a group of Italian modernist architects, known as ‘ra- tionalists’, launched an ambitious bid for convincing Mussolini that their brand of ar- chitectural modernism was best suited to become the official art of the Fascist state (arte di stato). They produced buildings of exceptional quality and now iconic status in the annals of international architecture, as well as an even more impressive register of ideas, designs, plans, and proposals that have been recognized as visionary works. Yet, by the end of the 1930s, it was the official monumental stile littorio – classical and monumental yet abstracted and stripped-down, infused with modern and traditional ideas, pluralist and ‘willing to seek a third way between opposite sides in disputes’, the style curated so masterfully by Marcello Piacentini – that set the tone of the Fascist state’s official architectural representation. These two contrasted architectural pro- grammes, however, shared much more than what was claimed at the time and has been assumed since. They represented programmatically, ideologically, and aestheti- cally different expressions of the same profound desire to materialize in space and eternity the Fascist ‘Third Way’ future avant la lettre. In both cases, architecture (and urban planning as the scalable articulation of architecture on an urban, regional, and national territorial level) became the ‘total’ media used to signify and not just express, to shape and not just reproduce or simulate, to actively give before passively receiv- ing meaning.

This dissertation is a demonstration of the quest for the rational in the architectural practice of Giuseppe Terragni. Furthermore, it sorts out the role of Terragni’s practice in the dichotomous relationships between city and architecture as well as state and project. Initially, it is the obligation of this dissertation to address questions of principles, in order to build a plenum1 for the relationship between the city and architecture. It traces movements 1 Assembled, staged grounding from where the building erects. through translatio and transformatio of architectural impression, in form and type, and its meta2 in concinnitas,3 in terms of legacy, legitimacy,4 and the rational5 in idea.
