The truth of photographs has always been conflicted. Light hits sensitized paper to produce a picture of the world, capturing a moment in time. This was here, every photograph asserts. But the picture is flat and static, bound by edges and defined by depth of field, reproducible and variable in size: an artificial organization of a world that is spatial and temporal. Nevertheless, this was here. Since photography was invented, it has carried with it this basic condition of “indexicality.” A photograph must exhibit some element of proof, some trace of reality, to be a photograph. Trouble with the Index presents a selection of photographs by Southern California- based artists whose work grapples with this complicated state of photographic truth.

    1 A Tribute to the Eastside “Words of Wisdom - Voices of the Past” An Oral History Project Catalogue Two 2 FORWARD Oral History Resource Catalogue (2016 Edition) Eastside Heritage Center has hundreds of oral histories in our permanent collection, containing hours of history from all around East King County. Both Bellevue Historical Society and Marymoor Museum had active oral history programs, and EHC has continued that trend, adding new interviews to the collection. Between 1996 and 2003, Eastside Heritage Center (formerly Bellevue Historical Society) was engaged in an oral history project entitled “Words of Wisdom – Voices of the Past.” As a part of that project, Eastside Heritage Center produced the first Oral History Resource Catalogue. The Catalogue is a reference guide for researchers and staff. It provides a brief introduction to each of the interviews collected during “Words of Wisdom.” The entries contain basic information about the interview date, length, recording format and participants, as well as a brief biography of the narrator, and a list of the topics discussed. Our second catalogue is a continuation of this project, and now includes some interviews collected prior to 1996. The oral history collection at the Eastside Heritage Center is constantly expanding, and the Catalogue will grow as more interviews are collected and as older interviews are transcribed. Gerteis, Ph.D. Steven W. Rowan, Ph.D. Copyright, Daron Dierkes, 2014 Abstract It is commonly accepted that Antebellum St. Louis was reborn in the wake of fire and disease. A boom in cultural activities during the 1850s has allowed the Great Fire of 1849 to serve as a historical landmark separating an older fur trading town from a new cosmopolitan city. This study examines that transformation hypothesis from a broader frame of reference and concludes that the Great Fire merely coincided with the end of a temporary lull in cultural activities that had begun much earlier in the 1830s.
