INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION U.S. NATIONAL LAB

Michael Roberts Deputy Chief Scientist, ISS-NL

16 November 2018 CASIS IS A NOT FOR PROFIT, NON GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION THAT MANAGES THE ISS US NATIONAL LAB

NASA provides: • Funding: $15M per year • Transportation: Commercial Resupply Services to/from ISS • Payload integration services • Resource Allocation: Not less than 50% of the U.S.O.S research capacity on ISS to ISS National Lab sponsored projects

CASIS creates (as part of 50% allocation): • Access to the ISS U.S. National Lab for Academic and Non-Profit Institutions, Government Agencies, and Commercial Companies to conduct R&D • Non-traditional partnerships, cost-sharing agreements, and other arrangements to leverage funding for R&D activities on the ISS National Lab that benefit from space OA-9 Launch May 20 2018

NIBIB/NCATS NSF 18- 514: NSF/CASIS COLLABORATION ON TISSUE ENGINEERING ON THE ISS TO BENEFIT LIFE ON EARTH NSF CBET (Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental & Transport Systems Division) and CASIS awarded two projects in August-2018.

ISS: Liver Tissue Engineering in Space (Tammy Chang - UCSF) This research hypothesizes that the uniquely favorable conditions for three- dimensional cellular self-organization in microgravity onboard the ISS National Lab will allow formation of a microvascular network within self- assembled liver parenchyma that feeds into a central macro blood vessel. Tissue Engineered Muscle in Microgravity as a Novel Platform to Study Sarcopenia (Ngan Huang – Palo Alto Veterans Institute) The overarching hypothesis is that engineered skeletal muscle in microgravity mimics salient features of sarcopenia on Earth and is a robust platform for testing of drugs to treat sarcopenia.
