The fires on Kangaroo Island in December 2007 were an example where nearly all of AIIMS was used. One of the key principles of AIIMS is the concept of Functional Management. AIIMS uses specific functions to manage an incident and the four functions used are Control, Operations, Planning and Logistics. The following pages provide an overview of the Kangaroo Island fires from the perspective of AIIMS incident management broken up into the four key functional areas as seen in Diagram 2. On arrival, an unknown substance wwas found on the outside of the door aand looked like it was coming from 50 ininside the building. FFurther investigation revealed the source VOLUNTEER - REGION 2 of this substance was a quantity of swswimming pool chemical from a 1,1,0000 litre tank; that had escaped into ththee bunding around the tank, and had susubsequentlyb seeped through the bunding. CCrews had challenges with the heavy fofog,g which made it difficult to conduct a visual assessment of the incident

The road was blocked to traffic during ththee night to keep crews safe, as the thick fofogg made spotting people and vehicles didifficult,ff even at short distances. In the daylight hours, the fog lifted susufficiently to re-open the road and mmaintain crew safety. CCrews identified the chemical, stopped ththe leak and stabilised the situation. A vavacuum truck was sourced and crews mmopped up the chemical. The incident lasted well over 12 hours. The fire burnt in a north-westerly direction and razed about 25 hectares of scrub, before being brought under control. In recognition of his 31 years of vvoluntary service, Rob was awarded tthe Australian National Medal, Life Membership of the South Australian Country Fire Service and the British 68 Fire Services Medal.
