InfoEx Industry Standard for an Extraordinary Industry InfoEx is a cooperative service managed by the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA), providing a daily exchange of technical snow, weather and avalanche information for subscribers. Subscribers are individual CAA Professional Members, or organizations and commercial businesses (e.g. backcountry guiding companies, ski hills, BC Highways, Parks Canada) employing CAA Professional Members whose operations require actively managing avalanche hazards. InfoEx gives avalanche professionals access to data that is accurate, relevant and real time. This knowledge improves each subscriber’s awareness of the conditions, greatly enhancing their ability to manage their local avalanche risks. InfoEx also serves as one of the key sources of data used by Avalanche Canada’s (AC) and other organizations public avalanche forecasters to produce and verify their products. The value of the InfoEx contribution to the AC public avalanche bulletin is estimated at an excess of $2 million annually. The significance of this contribution by avalanche professionals and their employers to public avalanche safety in the mountains of Canada cannot be overstated. E-mail: [email protected] Table of Contents EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report presents the results of the Public Safety Canada funded project to inventory current and predict future trends in avalanche threats and mitigation programs in Canada. The project also updated the Natural Resources Canada website and map of fatal avalanche incidents. Avalanches have been responsible for at least 702 fatalities in Canada since the earliest recorded incident in 1782. Sixty-one percent of these fatalities occurred in British Columbia, with 13% in Alberta, 11% in Quebec and 10% in Newfoundland and Labrador. The remainder occurred in Ontario, Nova Scotia and the Yukon, Northwest and Nunavut Territories. Fifty-three percent of the fatalities were people engaged in recreational activities, while 18% were people in or near buildings, 16% were travelling or working on transportation corridors and 8% were working in resource industries.

KOOTENAY ROCKIES REGIONAL PROFILE BUILDING TOURISM WITH INSIGHT January 2010 This publication summarizes tourism indicators for the Kootenay Rockies (KR) tourism region and provides a general overview of the area. The most recent annual data as well as historical trend data are presented, including visitor volume, accommodation and transportation indicators, and information about regional tourism products. Wherever possible, provincial data is provided to allow comparison between regional and provincial tourism performance. Visitor Volume Indicators REGIONAL CUSTOMS ENTRIES . The Kootenay Rockies region as a whole represents 3.3% of all provincial customs entries. All entry points experienced decreases in entries from 2007, with the largest decrease reported in Waneta (39.3%), Rykerts (36.9%) and Cranbrook (28%). The majority of customs entries for the region were through Kingsgate (30%), Roosville (23.9%), and Rykerts (19.3%). Roosville was the entry point for the greatest number of overseas visitors to the region with 38.2% of the 4,586 overseas custom entries (followed by Kingsgate with 23.8%). Kingsgate also provided the entry point for the greatest percentage of visitors from the United States (U.S.) (30.2%), followed by Roosville (23.6%). It should be noted that regional customs entries can be misleading, as many international visitors to the Kootenay Rockies tourism region initially enter through border crossings in other tourism regions, including those outside of the province. Year-end figures reveal a significant decrease in the number of overnight entries from U.S. visitors compared to 2007 (down 24.2%), and a decrease in the number of overseas visitors (down 13.2%).
