    UNITED STATES Constitution The backstory Israel Putnam (1718-1790) Israel Putnam was born in Salem Village, Massachusetts on January 7, 1718 to Joseph and Elizabeth Putnam. The Putnam family was very prosperous, and were prominently opposed to the Salem Witch Trials. When Israel was 22 he moved to northeast Connecticut in order to buy land because it was easier and cheaper for young men to buy land there. Putnam took part in the French and Indian War and was captured by the Kahnnawake (Mohawk Indians) in 1758. They were going to burn him alive, but he was saved by a rain storm and a French officer. After the French and Indian War, Putnam went back to Connecticut where he was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly during the Stamp Act crisis and was one of the founders of the state’s Sons of Liberty chapter. He was opposed to British taxation. By the time the American Revolution rolled around, Putnam had become a successful farmer and tavern keeper. The day after the Battles of Lexington and Concord began, Putnam learned of them and immediately left his plow in the field and headed to Cambridge. He was named Major General of the Army of Observation, which preceded the Continental Army. Putnam was second in command behind General Artemas Ward. He was instrumental in both the planning and realization of the Battle at Bunker Hill. Even though the famous phrase “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” is credited to Putnam; it is really unclear who actually uttered the phrase.

General Gage was a military man who had been in North America since the 1750s, and had more experience than any other senior British officer. He had fought in the French and Indian War alongside a young George Washington, with whom he still had a friendly relationship. Gage had married an American woman from a prominent New Jersey family, and 10 of their 11 children had been born in the Colonies.

This battle was fought on August 16, 1777, in a British effort to capture American storehouses in Bennington to restock their depleting provisions. Baum had entrenched his men at the bridge across the Walloomsac River, Dragoon Redoubt, and Tory Fort, which Stark successfully attacked. Colonel Warner's Vermont militia arrived in time to assist Stark's reconstituted force in repelling Breymann's relief column of some 600 men. The British forces had underestimated the strength of their enemy and failed to get the supplies they had sought, weakening General John Burgoyne's army at Saratoga.     NJS: An Interdisciplinary Journal Winter 2017 107 Hills, Huts, and Horse-Teams: The New Jersey Environment and Continental Army Winter Encampments, 1778-1780 By Steven Elliott DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.14713/njs.v3i1.67 New Jersey’s role as a base for the Continental Army during the War of Independence has played an important part in the state’s understanding of its role in the American Revolution, and continues to shape the state’s image as the “Cockpit of the Revolution,” and “Crossroads of the American Revolution” today. This article uncovers how and why the Continental Army decided to place the bulk of its forces in northern New Jersey for two consecutive winters during the war. Unlike the more renowned Valley Forge winter quarters, neither New Jersey encampment has received significant scholarly attention, and most works that have covered the topic have presumed the state’s terrain offered obvious strategic advantages for an army on the defensive. This article offers a new interpretation, emphasizing the army’s logistical needs including forage for its animals and timber supplies for constructing winter shelters. The availability of these resources, rather than easily defended rough terrain or close-proximity to friendly civilians, led Washington and his staff to make northern New Jersey its mountain home for much of the war. By highlighting to role of the environment in shaping military strategy, this article adds to our understanding of New Jersey’s crucial role in the American struggle for independence. FIER THE FALL OF NEW FRANCE and the stunning victories of the Seven Years' War, British officials turned their attention to the defense and administration of the newly enlarged American empire. For the first time, British leaders had to face the challenges of ruling large numbers of non-Protestant subjects. With 90,000 Catholic subjects in Canada, and at least 50,000 Native Americans (including perhaps 10,000 warriors) living east of the Mississippi River, a large military presence (7,500 regulars) seemed necessary. Rather than burdening British taxpayers, who had footed the enormous costs of the war, Great Britain now expected American colonists to pay for their own defense. At the same time, Parliament enacted a series of measures to centralize colonial administration and enforce trade laws. Once treated as imperial partners rather than dependents by the wartime administration of William Pitt, many American colonists bristled at what they believed was a systematic effort to deprive them of their British liberties. The burst of pro-British patriotic fervor that had briefly spanned the Atlantic Ocean quickly gave way to protests and recriminations. BRITONS OR AMERICANS? The 1765 Stamp Act and the colonial protests that followed have long been viewed as the first steps leading to the American Revolution. The decade that ended in April 1775 with the outbreak of rebellion in Massachusetts would be better characterized as a struggle to define the relationship between mother country and colonies rather than a drive for independence.

The Rest of the Army will immediately follow in Divisions, leaving only a convenient Space between each Division, to prevent Confusion, and Want of Accommodation upon their March. You will no Doubt make the best Dispatch in getting to New York. Upon your Arrival there, you will assume the Command, and immediately proceed in continuing to execute the Plan proposed by M. Genl. Lee, for fortifying that City, and securing the Passes of the E. and N. Rivers.     Bunker Hill in The American Revolution Jun 17, 1775 After the battle at Concord on 19 April 1775, the British beat a hasty retreat back to Boston. With American colonists hot on their heels and taking potshots at them from behind rocks and trees, they could not wait to get back to the relative safety of Boston. But the militia that had taken such a deadly toll did not retire once the British reached their base. Instead they set up camp just outside the city and dared the British to come out and play. British General Thomas Gage eyed the growing American force with considerable alarm. Their numbers grew by the day. But he knew that within the fortified city his troops were relatively safe from the thousands of colonial militia on the other side of the Charles River. He also realized, however, that the city would be vulnerable if the colonial militia were to occupy the high ground outside the city—in particular, Dorchester Heights to the south. Canons placed on those hills could cherry-pick the British barracks and ships inside the city below. Therefore he made plans to seize the high ground on 17 June. Informed of their plans (the Americans had spies everywhere), militia officers Israel Putnam and William Prescott convinced a reluctant General Artemas Ward to fortify the high ground to the north of the city, a cluster of hills including Breed’s and Bunker Hill. On 16 June, Prescott and a force of about 1000 men constructed, under the cover of darkness, a six-foot earthen wall along the crest of Breed’s Hill (the hill closest to the Charles River and the city of Boston).

Now imagine being killed and scalped in your wedding attire on the way to meet your fiancé. Your fear does not probably seem so bad now, right? Adding on to it, imagine that you were sick with smallpox while on your journey. You would be walking around with a terrible disease which eats away at the body and eventually kills you. These are not fears which we can imagine as vividly as the colonists in the 1770s could. Smallpox and being scalped were legitimate worries of the time for American colonists. Murder and disease ran rampant throughout the colonies. Not to mention the fact that they were embroiled in a revolution with the British Empire to pile on the misery.

Wadsworth hosted George Washington in his home, which stood on this very spot on Main Street, on multiple occasions between 1775 and 1789. As Commissary General to the Continental Army and later a political leader, Wadsworth used his influence to help contribute to the establishment of our young nation. His only son, Daniel, was a groundbreaking patron of the arts and created the Wadsworth Atheneum — on the lot where his father’s house once stood — in 1842.

    THE BATTLES OF LEXINGTON, CONCORD AND BUNKER HILL [1] On the 19th of April, in 1775, in Lexington Massachusetts, a shot was heard around the world. No one knows who fired that shot and it wasn’t physically louder than any other musket of the time but it had an effect on the whole world. That shot signified the willingness of the American colonists to defy the king of the most powerful country in the world at that time: Great Britain. Some eyewitnesses said the shot came from behind a stone wall, so it was likely an American who fired it but no one really knows. [2] Amid the tensions that had been under the surface for many years, both the British and the Americans had the same policy: Don’t fire unless fired upon. When the shot was heard, unordered firing broke out from among the British. They believed the Americans had fired upon them. The Americans nervously fired back yet all of their shots missed save one, which wounded a British soldier. With bayonets, the British drove the small group of American militiamen off Lexington Green, leaving behind 8 dead and 10 wounded colonists. The redcoats proceeded to Concord. There were rumors about stockpiles of food and gunpowder hidden there. The colonists were alerted to the British advance and managed to remove most of the supplies before the king’s troops arrived. [3] Word of the skirmish at Lexington spread like wildfire throughout Massachusetts and nearby colonies. American farmers and shopkeepers swarmed toward Concord to confront the British.
