It was the 108th Australian Open, the 52nd in the Open and the first Grand Slam of the year. The tournament featured events for professional players in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Junior and wheelchair players competed in singles and doubles tournaments. As in previous years, the main sponsor of the tournament was Kia. Novak Keayang and Naomi Osaka were defending champions in men's singles and women's singles, respectively. Osaka lost to Coco Goff in the third round. In contrast, the Washington national football team successfully defended its title by defeating Dominic Thiman to set a record for the tournament for the eighth time. It was the first version of the Australian Open with GreenSet, a hard surface produced by GreenSet Worldwide. [1] GreenSet was the third hard surface type used for the Australian Open. The Rod Laver Arena tournament, which was held at the Australian Open final, was the 2020 188th Australian Open, held at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The impact of bushfires bushfires that had burned large parts of Australia for months left smog over Melbourne on the first day of qualifying. That day the weather over Melbourne was ranked as the worst weather in the world. [2] In qualifying, the game was delayed, some players demanded medical timeouts, and Duleh Jakopovic was forced to retire due to a coughing fit that brought poor air quality.
