Odzihozo's drawn-out struggles to shape himself in turn created the mountains, streams, meadows, rivers, and lakes which make up Vermont. Odzihozo also transformed this environment, making it more suitable for human habitation. Moreover, so the legend goes, Odzihozo liked his work so well that he clambered upon a rock in Burlington Bay (which later arrivals named Rock Bonder), turned himself to stone, and there he chose to remain. Those who would teach about Vermont's heritage often resemble Odzihozo as they assemble materials to create a Vermont curriculum fromsomething. And creating a Vermont curriculum can be a challenging task. Vermont is too small a market: to attract the attention of commercial publishers interested in a national market. Therefore teachers here must develop their own materials for teaching about Vermont. Yet, as the proceedings of this conference suggest, Vermont is fortunate in a number of ways. We have a rich variety of materials available for teachers ranging from cook- books and memories from Grandma's attic to the latest environmental impact survey. Additionally, as Sam Hand pointed out in his keynote address, Vermont is sufficiently small to be studied as a coherent whole.Moreover, Vermont, perhaps in a manifestation of what Frank Bryan identifies as its commitment to human scale communities, has attracted a group of dedicated and energetic people--Vermonters by choice or by birth--to teach about. Vermont's heritage in the state's schools.These professionals are the people who are her able to create, shape, and maintain a Vermont curriculum. These proceedings, as well as the conference from which they were drawn, represent the continuing commitment of the Center for Research on Vermont and the Vermont Council on the Humanities and Public Issues to help teachers solve some of the problems of developing curricular materials for Vermont's classrooms. Our formula was simply to bring together a distin- guished group of Vermont scholars to talk about their work to an audience of interested teachers. We particularly asked the scholars to address the question of how the materials they were discussing might be taught. We then invited the teachers to develop curricular units for classroom use. We also asked both scholar-teachers and teacher-scholars to work together to establish some initial guideposts to resources that arecurrently available for teachers interested in exploring some aspects ofVermont's heritage. Our reasoning was that scholars and teachers should work cooperatively lo begin to identify. suggest, and develop teaching materials for Vermont classrooms and that these materials should then be offered to teachers all over rho stare. We believe these proceedings contain many suggestions for teaching about the heritage of this marvelously idiosyncratic place called Vermont. We hope that this volume will he useful; more than that, we hope itwill be used. vi We believe that this year's conference,the second we have held on Vermont's heritage, succeeded in a number of ways. As the following con- tributions from scholars and teachers suggest,there are dozens of ways in which Vermont material may be used inthe classroom. To mention just some of the cross-disciplinary waysthat might he used to introduce Vermont materials into the curriculum is only to hint atthe range of discussion which occurred at the conference itself. For example, the nature poetry of St. Albans' Frances Frost might he used tointroduce a unit of botany or geology

ALBANS, VERMONT together with the origin and the history of the Greene Family in England and Rhode Island by Walter and Ella Greene 1964 Copyright 1964 by Walter and Ella Greene PREFACE To forget one's ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root. - - Chinese Proverb Some years ago the authors discovered that the genealogy of our branch of the Greene family had been compiled to about the year 1800. This work was then conceived as a small pamphlet which would bring the record up to the present generation for our immediate family. In searching for data, we contacted many related branches of the family. We were encouraged by those with whom we talked to believe that interest in our endeavor reached beyond our own family. The information we gathered increased in volume to the point where we decided it should be preserved per­ manently in book form and that it should include a summary of information from earlier genealogies which are now out of print and practically unobtain­ able, except in large libraries and historical society collections. This work includes names and pertinent dates for the Vermont Greenes which were supplied to us by interested members of the present generation, supplemented by our own searches in genealogies and vital records. It is sufficiently complete, we believe, so that present (and future} generations not now included in the book can trace back their own lines to where they join that of Nathan, Job, or Caleb Greene, and from them to our common ances - tors in Rhode Island and England, Our sincere thanks to all who assisted us by supplying information and checking sections of the manuscript on the accuracy of the data for the vari­ ous branches of the family.

    BOOK REVIEWS ........................................................ A Building History of Northern New England By James L. Garvin (Hanover and London: The University Press of New England, 2001, pp. ix, 199, $35.00). his is not a typical volume of architectural history, surveying great Tmonuments and masters, identifying styles, or reproducing glorious photos of precious meetinghouses and mansions. True to its name, it is a history of building in upper New England, examining and explaining how and of what materials the regional buildings from the seventeenth century through World War II were put together. The book is the prod- uct of James Garvin’s extended process of self-education, synthesized from specialized scholarship of the last decades of the twentieth century (collected here into a valuable, topically organized bibliography) and looking closely at the material evidence over a period of some thirty years, the last thirteen as state architectural historian for the New Hampshire Division of Historic Resources. It looks at the characteristics of building technology and planning, beginning with craft principles dis- tilled from intuitive engineering, through the increasing impact of manu- factured details and systems, to complete pre-fabrication. The book is organized into concise, well-explained sections dealing first with technology (why the building is built the way it is) and then with style (why the building looks the way it does). In the former Garvin explores the unfolding histories of framing, sheathing, masonry, roofing, hardware, finishes, nails, and glass. He takes us from hand-hewn timbers to contemporary two-by-fours, from braced frame and plank construc- tion to platform framing, from split shingles to cement asbestos roofing, from graduated clapboards to novelty siding, from Dutch bond brick to concrete blocks, from riven lath to beaver board.

  • In Memoriam: John Joseph Duffy, Jr. (1934-2020)
    In Memoriam . John Joseph Duffy, Jr. 1934-2020 fter perservering for three years through A a combination of incurable diseases, John Duffy left us in February. He also left his daughters, his grandchildren, and Barbara, his wife of nearly six decades who provided steady, dignified, and loving care during his fight. John left a long list of Vermont colleagues as well. We appreciated him as a warm and gentle companion, blessed with a quiet sense of humor, sparking blue eyes and a mischievous smile, and we admired his rigorous discipline to finish what he had started and his perceptive scholarship that made a positive and indelible imprint on our understanding of Vermont. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University in 1957, John came to the University of Vermont to pursue a M.A. in Eng- lish, which he received in 1958. A year in Burlington made him eager to return to the Green Mountains when he could. After a year as the Third Form (ninth grade) English Master at Mercersburg Academy (Mercers- burg, PA), John entered the doctoral program in English at Syracuse University. With brief appointments teaching at Rider University (Law- rence Township, NJ) and Syracuse University, he received a Ph.D. in 1964. His doctoral study and interest in the literature of England, Ire- land, Canada, and the United States and its cultural contexts gave John a broad perspective that brought a special nuance to his approach to history. After leaving Syracuse, John taught briefly at the University of Maryland (College Park) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before accepting an appointment as an Assistant Professor of English at the University of New Hampshire.

She is 48 and has practiced probate, business and banking law in South Carolina since .1958. She engaged in private firm practice from 1958 to 1976, when she became Senior Vice President and General Counsel of a large South Carolina bank. Nor was he in the least overbearing in conversation, as is often the case with good talkers, but added the influence of unfailing politeness to marvelous powers of persuasion, such as one must have felt to appreciate. OBITUARY NOTICE OF CHIEF JUSTICE SEYMOUR. Hon. Origen Storks Seymour, Ex-Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the State, died at Litchfield, where he was born and had always resided, on the 12th of August, 1881, in the seventy-eighth year of his age. Judge Seymour was a man of very rare qualities of mind and heart. It is safe to assert that no member of the Connecticut Bar ever drew to himself in larger measure the respect and affection of his professional brethren and the confidence and esteem of the public at large. Judge Seymour was born February 9th, 1804. His father was Ozias Seymour, for many years sheriff of Litchfield County. His grand father, Mnj. Moses Seymour, bore a distinguished part in the Revolu tionary War. Gov. Horatio Seymour of New York, Senator Horatio Seymour of Vermont, and many other noted public men of the name, were his family relatives. He graduated at Yale College in the class of 1824. His college standing was very good, although from weakness of eyes he was compelled much of the time to depend on having his lessons read to him by others.
