The Castaways on Gilligans Island is a 1979 made-for-television comedy film that continues the adventures of the shipwrecked castaways from the 1964–67 sitcom Gilligans Island and the first reunion movie, Rescue from Gilligans Island, featuring the original cast from the television series with the exception of , who was replaced in the role of by Judith Baldwin. Written by Al Schwartz, Elroy Schwartz and series creator and directed by Earl Bellamy, it was first broadcast on NBC May 3, 1979. Unlike the independently-produced Rescue from Gilligans Island, this and the subsequent The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligans Island were produced by MCA/Universal Television. 1.1. Plot Part One. The movie picks up directly after the end of Rescue from Gilligans Island. The castaways are once again stranded on the same island that they had been on for so many years. The storm has contaminated all of the underground springs, and they are desperately searching for fresh water. Gilligan stumbles upon a pair of airplanes that are hidden in the jungle that they failed to notice throughout their 15 years on the island. It is revealed that the island was a base of operations for the Army Air Corps during World War II, and the hangar was abandoned and heavily overgrown with jungle brush, and as such hidden from plain sight. The tidal wave from the previous movie destroyed the foliage and exposed the hangar. The Professor believes that he can combine the two planes into one and fly them all back to civilization. He succeeds in cobbling together an airworthy plane and, dubbing it Minnow III, they head back. During the attempt to fly back to Hawaii, however, the plane has engine trouble. The Professor orders Gilligan to jettison some weight, and in doing so, Gilligan falls out and has to parachute down to the island. The castaways elect to return for Gilligan, although the Professor warns it will be impossible to take off again. Right after landing, the engine falls off, and remarks it would have been certain death had that happened while airborne. Gilligan inadvertedly saved the castaways again, and the group says they should look for him. They soon find him stuck in a tree, but they are dismayed as the plane was their final hope of rescue. Their despair is quickly dispelled when a U.S. Navy captain appears saying that their plane was detected on radar long enough for them to track it back to the island. The castaways are once again returned to civilization and the U.S. government pinpoints the location of the island to prevent future castaway incidents. After being officially rescued, Mr. Howell decides to build a hotel resort on the island- a "living tribute", as he calls it, to the years the seven lived together on the island. 1.2. Plot Part Two. The second half - which was originally intended as a pilot for a Love Boat -type of weekly series - picks up a year later, with the island now a tropical resort fully linked to civilization and owned by Mr. Howell who makes Gilligan and the other castaways silent partners in the hotel. The rest of the castaways work as the staff of the resort, where the Skipper and Gilligan man a motor whale boat, aptly named Minnow IV, that shuttles people to and from cruise ships that stop at the island. On one such trip, the Minnow IV brings two married couples to the island. One couple has Henry Elliot Tom Bosley, a workaholic real estate business man from Cleveland, whose wife, Myra Marcia Wallace, is trying to get to relax and forget about work, as well as an unaccompanied minor named Robbie Ronnie Scribner. It is initially assumed the kid belonged to either the Elliots or the other couple on the boat, but neither couple claims the boy the Elliots mention their kids being back home, and Henry actually forgets how many they have, nor does any other couple staying on the island. Henry continues to fuss over work, despite Myra and the rest of the castaways trying to help him relax, but nothing helps; not a massage, not fishing, not snorkeling, nothing. Henry even finds the only pay phone on the island hidden in a fake tree in the lobby, and used only for emergencies and tries to call his office back in Cleveland, then panics because no one answers there, only for Myra to remind him of the time zone difference. Henry finally decides to placate his wife by changing out of his suit which he had been wearing since getting off the Minnow IV into a pair of shorts and a polo shirt, and does not shave. She is not too impressed with his new look or his sudden desire to adapt to the vacation, but she reluctantly goes along with it. It is shown to be an attempt to use reverse psychology to drive Myra to want to leave sooner, but she caught Henry telling that to another couple they have spoken to before one of whom is a dentist, and is glad to get away from work for a vacation, and winds up threatening to have them stay for many weeks. Meanwhile, Robbie, the unaccompanied kid, is sneaking around the island, and even snatches a hamburger from the Skippers plate when he is not looking. As he is doing this, he climbs trees, swings from tree to tree via vines like Tarzan, and even shows a lot of skill as a gymnast. His parents end up coming over from the cruise ship to find him after realizing he was not in the ships gym or on the boat at all. Gilligan goes out and eventually finds him, and learns he ran away from his parents due to undue pressure put on him to work hard to go to the Olympics, and how he would love to be more like a regular kid and not be practicing for eight hours a day on the weekends. Gilligan does not agree to hide him from his parents and eventually he is reunited with them, where his parents learn why he ran away and agree to dial it down, realizing they never listened to what he really wanted. Another story is the luau planned for that night and how the Professor found ancient masks to hang at the beach for it. The desk clerk, Naheeti played by Hawaiian actress Mokihana, warns of evil spirits coming from the masks, which the Professor naturally blows off. He then shows stickers on the insides of the masks saying "MADE IN CHICAGO" to put everyones mind at ease. Later on at the luau, Henry is seen finally relaxing for real and enjoying himself, apologizing to Myra for being so uptight. When Myra suggests coming back in a year, Henry says he wants to return in six months and see if he can talk Mr. Howell into building condos on the island to which Myra laughs. The Professor also admits to everyone the "MADE IN CHICAGO" stickers on the masks were placed on them himself to try to prove there is nothing to worry about. Of course, after that, the smaller masks move, and the pole the big mask was on falls onto the table they are sitting at, sending a bowl of poi in the air, landing on the Professors head. The Professor offers no comment to that. The Castaways on Gilligan's Island. The Castaways of Gilligan's Island is a made-for-TV Movie and a sequel to Rescue from Gilligan's Island that followed up on the series and movie and was intended to be a potential pilot to a new series. The second of three Gilligan's Island movies, it first aired May 3, 1979. Contents. Synopsis [ ] Twelve days since they were stranded on the same island, the Castaways learn from the Professor that the storm that washed them off the island to their rescue the year before has contaminated all of the underground freshwater springs on the island with saltwater. After annoying the Skipper and the Professor, Gilligan goes exploring and discovers that the storm has uncovered and exposed an old abandoned Army Air Corps hangar with planes once hidden from view by underbrush. The Professor believes that he can repair at least one of the planes with parts from the other to fly them all back home, creating a Frankenstein-like craft they dub the Minnow 3. Unfortunately, the unwieldy craft does not perform as expected and they have to jettison their supplies, Gilligan tumbling out with them. The Skipper requests they turn back to search for Gilligan's parachute, and almost right after landing, one engine then another falls off, showing how much danger they were in on the attempt. Although they are still back to marooned on the island, they all realize going back to get Gilligan saved them from plummeting to their deaths. Shortly, after finding Gilligan hanging in a tree, Navy officers arrive looking for the plane that they had noticed appearing and vanishing from radar, rescuing the castaways once more. Mr. Howell announces that in honor of the years spent on this island, he will build a vacation resort. The location is pinpointed by the Navy and brought to the attention of geographers. The island is annexed as a United States territory, preventing any future castaway incidents. Over the following year, Mr. Howell converts the island into a fully-functioning tropical resort linked to civilization, employing Gilligan, the Skipper and the others as silent partners in the hotel with added positions to entertain the guests. They now live again on the island with all the comforts of civilization and a link to the mainland. With the Howells as hosts, Gilligan and the Skipper escort and bring in guests, Ginger and Mary Ann cater to the female guests, and the Professor conducts personal experiments between tours of the island. Among the guests, Gilligan notices a young boy running loose without his parents, and the Skipper and Mr. Howell meet and deal with a workaholic named Henry Elliot unable to relax and forget about work. Gilligan tries to help the boy make peace with his parents pressuring him into academic pursuits as Mr. Elliot learns to relax and trust his employees back home. Tina Louise is the Last Surviving Cast Member of ‘Gilligan’s Island’ Tina Louise — who played movie star Ginger Grant — is the last surviving member of the cast of Gilligan’s Island . That became true when (“Mary Ann”) died on December 30, 2020. Here’s the full roll call of the cast by their date of death: (Thurston Howell III): Died on July 3, 1989, aged 76 Alan Hale Jr. (the Skipper): Died on January 2, 1990, aged 68 (Mrs. Howell, aka “Lovey”): Died on April 10, 1991, aged 90 (Gilligan): Died on September 2, 2005, aged 70 (the Professor): Died on January 16, 2014, aged 89 Dawn Wells (Mary Ann): Died on December 30, 2020, aged 82. Sherwood Schwartz , the creator of Gilligan’s Island (and, later, of The Brady Bunch), died on July 12, 2011 at the age of 94. If you prefer to rank the cast by longevity, it looks like this: Alan Hale Jr. : lived to age 68 : lived to age 70 Jim Backus : lived to age 76 Dawn Wells : lived to age 82 Tina Louise : Currently at 86 years Russell Johnson : lived to age 89 Natalie Schafer : lived to age 90. Add them up (excluding Tina Louise), and the average lifespan of a Gilligan’s Island actor is 79.17 years. (Toss in Sherwood Schwartz and the Gilligan -related lifespan rises to 81.29 years.) Our new biography of Tina Louise shows that the actress had a lot more game than many people realize. She was in the original Broadway cast of the musical Li’l Abner , which was a huge hit in its day, running for 693 performances from 1956 to 1958. She studied with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, which turned out alumni like Paul Newman and Al Pacino . She starred in movies in Italy and the US. And so on. She also recorded her own album of standards, It’s Time for Tina , in 1957. Her breathy alto, and her song selection — “Let’s Do It,” “Tonight is the Night,” “Hold Me” — did nothing to dispel her image as a sensual beauty on the rise. (Bonus fact: jazz legend Coleman Hawkins played tenor sax in the studio band.) Well, that was a long time ago. Gilligan’s Island ran from 1964 to 1967 on CBS Television, and then its 98 episodes went into reruns forever, reportedly earning $90 million for creator Sherwood Schwartz (though not for the cast). Tina Louise moved back to Manhattan full-time in 1992, and continues to live there today. She will turn 87 on February 11th. User Reviews. The second made-for-television movie has Gilligan and his buddies finally getting rescued but they then decide to turn their beautiful island into a resort. One of their first couples is a work-a-holic (Tom Bosley) and his wife (Marcia Wallace) who wants him to chill out and have some fun. Will the crew be able to change him? RESCUE FROM GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, somehow, turned out to be one of the biggest and most watched made-for-television movies ever made so it was obvious we'd get something else. Look, I'm really not a fan of the television show and I haven't watched it in probably twenty years. I never really found it all that funny but I will admit that it contained some sort of weird charm that might infect people to where they become fans. This film here is perfectly built like one of the shows because there are so many dumb moments but at the same time you can't help but be mildly amused by the stuff. The original Gilligan's Island cast members certainly fit back into their roles without any problem. Both Bosley and Wallace are fine as are the rest of the supporting players. The production values are obviously cheap and it looks like there wasn't much of a budget but if you're a fan of the series then it's likely you're going to be entertained with this. Television's Greatest Hits, Vol. 1. Includes the Gilligan's Island theme song - 65 total tv themes. For more information and to purchase from Amazon.com: Theme Song Lyrics: Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, A tale of a fateful trip That started from this tropic port Aboard this tiny ship. The mate was a mighty sailing man, The skipper brave and sure. Five passengers set sail that day For a three hour tour, a three hour tour. The weather started getting rough, The tiny ship was tossed, If not for the courage of the fearless crew The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost. The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle With Gilligan, The Skipper too, The millionaire and his wife, The movie star The professor and Mary Ann, Here on Gilligan's Isle. * Note: During the 1st season, the 2nd to last line was "and the rest" - this was because Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells didn't have it specified in their contracts that they would be credited up front with the rest of the cast. ---- So this is the tale of the castaways, They're here for a long, long time, They'll have to make the best of things, It's an uphill climb. The first mate and the Skipper too, Will do their very best, To make the others comfortable, In the tropic island nest. No phone, no lights no motor cars, Not a single luxury, Like Robinson Crusoe, As primitive as can be. So join us here each week my friends, You're sure to get a smile, From seven stranded castaways, Here on "Gilligan's Isle." The small charter boat Minnow had been on a sight-seeing party when it was caught in a storm and wrecked on the shore of an uncharted South Pacific island. Marooned together on the island were: the good-natured skipper; a somewhat blustery millionaire and his vacuous wife; a sexy movie star named Ginger; a high-school science teacher known as The Professor; a sweet, naive country girl named Mary Ann; and Gilligan. Gilligan was the boat's sole crew member, aside from the skipper. He was well-meaning but inept in his attempts to find a means of returning to civilization. As a result, and perhaps even more because this simple-minded farce became a top hit, the little band was stranded on that island for three full seasons. One question that never got answered, however, concerned the luggage. In the first episode, and in the theme song, it was pointed out that the cruise was only supposed to be for three hours. How, then, did the passengers have enough clothing to last three years? Gilligan's biggest fans were kids, and when the series finally went into repeats on local stations they made it one of the biggest rerun hits of the 1960s and 197s. An animated cartoon version called The New Adventures of Gilligan was produced for ABC, and ran on that network's weekend daytime schedule from 1974 to 1977. Then in 1978 NBC had the bright idea of bringing the original cast back together for a reunion special, in which they were finally rescued. All agreed to appear except Tina Louise (who wanted too much money, and so was replaced by Judith Baldwin). "Rescue From Gilligan's Island" aired in October 1978 as a two-part special, and was a phenomenal hit. They did finally get off the island, and returned to a triumphant homecoming. But then they made the mistake of going on a reunion cruise on the Minnow II, only to wind up stranded back on the same island-- the result of another freak storm! "Castaways on Gilligan's Island," a folow-up special aired in 1979, had them converting the island into a tourist resort. And in still another sequel in 1981, The Harlem Globetrotters dropped in. There was a talk of reviving the series, but audiences for the 1979 and 1981 sequels were not very large, and the plans never materialized. One of TV's great bits of trivia is Gilligan's first name. None was ever revealed on the show, but years later on a talk show claimed that he had talked the matter over with the show's creator/producer Sherwood Schwartz, and they had decided that if Gilligan ever did need a first name it would be "Willie." Jayne Mansfield turned down the role of "Ginger"; Carroll O'Connor tested for the role of The Skipper; Dabney Coleman tested for the role of The Professor. Raquel Welch auditioned for the role of Mary Anne. Jerry Van Dyke turned down the role of Gilligan. The first season had the cast using cups that were made from real coconuts. However, they found that the cups were porous and soaked through like they were sweating. Thus in the later seasons, the coconut cups were plastic replicas. The characters' full names: The Skipper: Jonas Grumby. The Professor: Roy Hinkley. Mr. Howell: Thurston Howell III. Mrs. Howell: Eunice Howell. Ginger: Ginger Grant. Mary Ann: Mary Ann Summers Gilligan's first name, the subject of some debate ever since the series first aired. 'Williams, John' (then known as Johnny) wrote the theme song for the unaired 1964 pilot. The ship's name, S. S. Minnow, was not named for the fish but rather for Newton Minow, head of the FCC in 1961. Minow was the one who called television "America's vast wasteland". Sherwood Schwartz did not care for Minow so he named the soon-to-be shipwrecked ship after him. The original pilot was filmed in November on 1963 but never aired until October of 1992. In the original pilot, the characters of the Professor and Ginger were player by a different actor and actress. There was no character of Mary Ann. In the pilot, there was a character called Bunny. Bunny was the buxom blonde and Ginger was a practical brunette. In the pilot, Ginger and Bunny were both secretaries. The music for the original pilot's theme song was written by (a young) John Williams. This music had a Latin sound and the lyrics were sung with a Spanish accent. In the pilot, it was a six-hour trip, not a three-hour tour. Originally slated to return for the 1967-68 television season but canceled at the last minute by CBS head William Paley, to make room for the long-running "Gunsmoke" (1955). The three man folk singing group, The Wellingtons, sang the theme song for the first season, but were replaced by a similar sounding group, The Eligibles, for the following seasons. The Wellingtons (plus one) also portrayed 'The Mosquitoes' in a classic episode of the series. The opening credits for the first season were shot shortly after the assassination of U.S. president, John F. Kennedy. A flag at half mast can be seen in the background. The character of the Professor was supposedly a graduate from SMU, TCU and UCLA, Thurston Howell III went to Harvard. Howell would call an inferior a "Yale Man". In the credits, 'Johnson, Russell' and Dawn Wells were relegated to being simply "The Rest". That changed in the second season when Bob Denver demanded that they be given an equal share in the credits thus changing the lyrics to "The Professor and Mary Ann." Sherwood Schwartz, who composed both themes, has said it didn't' occur to him the Professor and Mary Ann would turn into prominent characters. According to series creator Sherwood Schwartz, Gilligan's full name was Willy Gilligan. Bob Denver says he never heard the name Willy Gilligan until long after the show was off the air. The lagoon set was located at the CBS lot in Studio City, CA. If sequences there were filmed too early or too late in the day, microphones would record rush hour traffic noise from a nearby freeway. Phil Silvers was cast as a producer in a episode partly because his production company was actually producing the show. Creator Sherwood Schwartz said that he dreamed up the idea of the show because he wanted the castaways to represent a microcosm of society and he wanted to show how they worked together to help each other when in trouble. As the show progressed, producers planned to introduce a new character - a pet dinosaur - but decided against it because of the cost of special effects. The Skipper and Gilligan both were friends from the navy. The Skipper saved Gilligan after he fell overboard from the ship they were serving on. The premise required that the characters use various devices that had to be constructed from only the various materials found on a tropical island. Thus the props had to be specially made and the prop department enjoyed the challenge which was a change of pace from simply bringing in the standard props from storage. The bamboo foot pedal-powered car used in one episode was a particular favorite with the cast queuing up to try it out.
