Volunteer Trip Leader: Charlotte Carter Titans of the Ice Age - 3D IMAX Saturday, January 11, $24 pp Depart SCPL 9:15 a.m.; Return 3:30 p.m. Titans of the Ice Agetransports viewers to the beautiful and otherworldly frozen landscapes of North America, Europe and Asia ten thousand years before modern civilization. Giant screen technology of the Bob Bullock IMAX will let us peer though the 3D canvas to an ancient world of ice, the dawn of our species, a time when man shared the tundra with majestic woolly beasts. Dazzling computer-generated imagery will bring this era to life, from saber-toothed cats and cave bears to dire wolves and woolly mammoths - giants both feared and hunted by prehistoric humans. Following our show there will be time for "lunch on your own" at the Star of Texas Museum Cafe. Sandwiches, salads, chips and cookies along with sodas and coffees will be available. Next we visit the Texas Natural Science Center on the UT campus. See fascinating creatures that lived in Texas millions of years ago, including the 30 foot mosasaur that swam in the shallow sea that covered the Austin area. This creature, along with more than 4,000 rare and unusual specimens that define the Lone Star State fill this museum, a showcase of valuable specimens - many never before seen by the public. Ticket cost includes transportation, IMAX theater show, and museum fees. Volunteer Trip Leader: Jerilee Prather In Company with Angels – Waco Friday, January 17, $35 pp Depart SCPL 8:30 a.m.; Return 5 p.m. Making its Texas debut in Waco, this traveling exhibit of seven exquisite Tiffany stained glass windows is nothing short of inspiring. The eight foot high, backlit lancet windows depict the angels addressed in Revelation, chapters 2 - 3. Our visit will reveal the mysterious history of these windows and give us insight into the man who created them, Louis Comfort Tiffany, son of "The King of Diamonds." We will also take a tour of the Grand Lodge of Texas - Masonic Museum. Many of the men that fought for Texas freedom were Masons, and this museum houses artifacts ranging from a lock of Sam Houston's hair to Ben Milam's gun. Lunch will be on your own with a wide choice of fast food restaurants. No harm in a burger and fries once in a while, especially when you top it off with a Dr. Pepper Float, right? That’s what will complete our self-guided tour of the Dr. Pepper Museum. If you'd like to have fun with a scavenger hunt, we will provide you with a list of items to find as you tour. Everyone gets a float, but the best "scavenger" get the "prize"! Note: This is a walking tour with multiple stops. Please know your limitations. Ticket cost includes transportation, tour fees, and Dr. Pepper Float. Volunteer Trip Leader: Jerilee Prather Supper Club – Pecan Street Café Monday, January 20, $60 pp Depart SCPL 4:45 p.m.; Return 9 p.m. The Old Pecan Street Café first opened its doors on Sixth Street in Austin in a small structure built at the turn of the century. Previous tenants had included saloon owners, Chinese laundries, shoemakers and a drug store until the Café became the latest tenant in 1972. In 1978, they moved into their present location, a building that had been constructed by J. W. Simpson in 1905 for his new hardware store. The limestone rubble walls date back to 1872. Our sumptuous meal will begin with their tossed green salad. Followed by a half portion of Grilled Salmon with raspberry chipotle sauce and a half portion of their specialty, Chicken Poppicotti. The chicken breast is stuffed with cheese, spinach, pecans and topped with hollandaise sauce. Also included in the meal are roasted new potatoes, rice pilaf and veggie medley. Iced tea and coffee are included with an option to purchase other beverages. Our chef will decide on dessert. We always love a surprise! After dinner, weather permitting, we will walk along Sixth Street for the sights and sounds of this unique area. If the weather does not cooperate, then I will give you a driving tour complete with a history of Austin. Our transportation will be in the small bus without some of the usual amenities, but very cozy.
