We are delighted to have this outstanding event in our Welcome to the Waipa district and to welcome teams and spectators from New Zealand and around the world. district and to the UCI New Zealand Cycle Classic My Council is immensely proud of its ongoing support for cycling, including recreational cycling, in all its forms. road race. We are particularly delighted to support this world-class event; the first UCI-sanctioned road race to be held in Waipa. Over the next few days, as the five stages of the race traverse our district, please take the time to enjoy a part of New Zealand that some of our finest athletes call home. A number of high-performing sporting organisations, including Cycling New Zealand, are based here. We have a proud tradition of raising and nurturing world-class sports people across a range of disciplines including road, track and BMX cycling, rowing, equestrian, canoeing and triathlon. The district has more registered high-performance carded athletes than New Zealand’s biggest city, Auckland, with Olympic and world champions – past and present – part of our community. Cambridge, one of Waipa’s two main centres, has the highest concentration of domiciled Olympic Gold medallists of any town in the world. Given all this, it’s no surprise our district is known as the ‘Home of Champions’. However it’s not just our sporting prowess that we are so proud of. The Waipa district has much to offer visitors and residents. While you’re here enjoying the cycling, please take the opportunity to get out and about and see what we have to offer. We wish all of you a very pleasant stay here in the Waipa district. To those who live here and who are helping out at the event – thank you. To the cyclists, coaches, managers, support crew and spectators, best of luck for the competition and have a wonderful few days. Typically there may be more than one group of riders, each of which will be escorted by motorbikes and also accompanied by motorcycle marshals and TV crew.

Each group of riders may also be followed by several cars, including judging vehicles, neutral service and team support vehicles.

Behind the peloton will come the main convoy of vehicles, including further judging vehicles, team cars and ambulances before the famous broom wagon closing vehicle. Once this has passed, the road is re-opened and the normal rules of the road will apply.

BEST PLACES TO VIEW THE RACE

As riders will be completing eight laps of each circuit, there is plenty of opportunity to find a corner to stand on or move around during the race to get a different perspective of what is happening. This will be best achieved on foot or via bike as parking on the road- side is not advisable due to the traffic management plans implemented to meet the UCI requirements of the race.

If out on the course, allow yourself plenty of time to get back to the finish line at Victoria Square in Cambridge. During the last hour of the race, the stage will be livestreamed, with commentary on the big screen at Party in the Park. Food trucks, the Good George Pop Up Pub, a Kids Fun Zone, live music, a Freestyle BMX demo display and a heap more will be happening in the Park. An afternoon of fun for the whole family to enjoy.
