COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF MELINDA HYMAN CHANTICLEER CLUB DIRECTOR Melinda Hyman is in her eighth year at Coastal Carolina University and her sixth serving as director of the Chanticleer Club, Coastal’s athletic donor program. As the director, one of her top priorities is the coordination and hosting of the Cheers for Chanticleers Gala, the largest one-night fundraiser for Coastal Carolina Athletics. Prior to her current position, Hyman served as an Athletic Development Specialist, assisting the Director of Athletic Development in all booster club fundraising activities. She has also served as an administrative assistant in the department, as well as assisting with game management duties. She also spent 12 years as an elementary school teacher in the Horry County School District from 1989-2001. Before that, she worked for a local attorney, as well as for C&S National Bank. Hyman received her associate’s degree from Coastal in 1979 and earned her Bachelor of Arts in early childhood education in 1989. A native of Conway, Hyman lives in Conway with her husband Craig and the couple has a daughter Katherine.

BARRY LIPPMAN ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER Barry Lippman is starting his third year as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Coastal Carolina University, with primary responsibility for CoastalC Carolina’s nationally-ranked program. A member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Lippman joined the Coastal Carolina staff in August 2006 from UNC Wilm- iington,n where he was the Head Men’s Athletic Trainer and directly handled the baseball and women’s soccer teams from January 2005 uuntil his arrival in Conway. Prior to his tenure at UNCW, Lippman worked with the National Football League’s Detroit Lions from June 2004 tthroughh January 2005, assisting with the daily medical coverage of NFL football players. Lippman spent two years at Georgia Tech, earning his master’s degree in sports medicine in 2004. While there, he was also an graduate assistant athletic trainer, working with the football, baseball and men’s and women’s teams. He worked with programs that went to the 2002 Silicon Valley Classic Bowl, 2003 Humanitarian Bowl and 2004 NCAA Baseball Super Regional. Lippman earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Florida State University in 2001. As a student assistant trainer, he worked with the nationally- ranked football and baseball programs at FSU and eventually was a head student athletic trainer during his tenure.

LINDA LYERLY ASSOCIATE A.D.-FINANCE

Linda Lyerly is in her second year as Associate Athletics Director for Finance at Coastal Carolina University. Prior to her move to Athletics, she was employed in the Coastal Carolina University Office of Financial Services for 14 years, serving as Controller fforo 11 years and Associate Vice President for Finance for three. She was responsible for the transition of the accounting, accounts payable, payroll, student rereceivables, and purchasing systems from the University of to Coastal Carolina University’s own system following its establishment as an iindependentn public institution in 1993. Lyerly submitted the University’s financial report to be considered for its first Government Finance Officers’ Certificate oof Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting in fiscal year 2002, a certificate that was earned that year and in subsequent years through fiscal year 22007. She currently serves as a reviewer for that award. Lyerly has worked in various government and non-profit accounting positions since 1976. She graduated from the University of Tennessee with her bachelor’s degree, majoring in history with a minor in French. While at Tennessee, she was a member of the University’s women’s tennis team. She holds a master’s in higher education from Southern Illinois University and a Masters of Accountancy from the Culverhouse School of Accountancy at the University of Alabama. After receiving the Masters of Accountancy, she worked two years as a staff accountant at Alabama, specializing in tax reporting and data control. She served first as Finance Director and then Director of Coastal Carolina University’s Waccamaw Area Agency on Aging for three years prior to taking the position as the University Controller. JOHN A. MARTIN ASSISTANT A.D.-MEDIA RELATIONS John Martin is finishing his sixth year as the Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations at Coastal Carolina University. Martin joined the Coastal Carolina athletics staff in December 2002, after serving as the assistant sports information director at Eastern Michigan UUniversity for the previous four years. There, he was responsible for the many of the program’s 21 sports and the department’s web site. Prior to that, the 38-year-old Martin had been on the staff at the University of Detroit Mercy for two-and-one-half years, serving the final yyear and a half as the assistant sports information director. He also was the director of operations for the Oklahoma City Cavalry of the CContinental Basketball Association from 1994-96 and also spent two years with that team as an intern. A member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Martin also has extensive experience in media relations, hhaving worked as the results operations supervisor for team handball at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He was also a media relations and operations staff member at the 1993, 1994 and 1995 U.S. Olympic Festivals and international team handball events, while also working as a media relations director for a professional roller hockey team. A native of Oklahoma City, Martin earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oklahoma. He completed his bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1992 and his master’s in sports management in 1994. Martin, his wife, Lyndsey (Horton), and their sons, Cameron (5) and Alex (1), reside in Conway. 2008 MEDIA GUIDE 89 COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF JOEO MAZURKIEWICZ ASSOCIATE A.D.-ACADEMICS & STUDENT SERVICES Joe Mazurkiewicz is completing his fifth year as an the Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Student Services at Coastal Carolina University. Mazurkiewicz has been a part of the Coastal Carolina landscape for the past 21 years, working primarily in student affairs at the University. Most recently, he was the Director of Student Development, where he was responsible for the overall administration and coordination for many of the student services on campus, including Counseling Services, Women Student Services, Drug and Alcohol Services, Career Services and Student Health Services. During his tenure, he also had served as the Director of Counseling Services, head of Student Health Services. He also served as an academic advisor and instructor at Coastal Carolina University. A member of the American Counseling Association and American College Personnel Association, Mazurkiewicz has had a variety of experiences in his career, including working at Louisiana State University and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and schools and clinics in New Jersey. He studied abroad as a part of the Fulbright/Hays Summer Study in Poland both in 1992 and 2003. He also served a two-year stint in the Peace Corps as a teacher, volunteering in the Marshall Islands, Micronesia in the mid 1970s.

JJCOSH MCCORKLEO ASSISTANT TICKET MANAGER Josh McCorkle is in his second year as the Assistant Ticket Manager at Coastal Carolina University and his fourth within the athletic ddepartment at Coastal Carolina. Prior to working in the ticket office, McCorkle worked with Coastal Carolina’s Athletic Marketing and Promotions. He came to Coastal iinn January 2006 as the Marketing and Promotions Intern, where he was responsible for securing raffle items and donations for the 2006 AAthletic Gala, solicited for corporate sponsorships and assisted with game day promotions. McCorkle was promoted to Athletic Marketing aand Promotions Assistant and was responsible for all in-game promotions during the 2007 Coastal Carolina Baseball season as well as ccoordinated all game music and public announcements during men’s and women’s basketball games. Before coming to Coastal Carolina, McCorkle also worked game day operations for the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field for five years. McCorkle graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a degree in sport management in May 2006. McCorkle was married October 2007 to the former Jocelyn Bankes, and the couple resides in Myrtle Beach.

KELLY MOORE MARKETING ASSISTANT/HEAD COACH Kelly Moore is in her third full-time year on the Coastal Carolina University athletic department staff, serving her fourth year as the marketingm assistant and third as the head cheerleading coach. In 2005, Moore joined the staff as a marketing assistant, working on game-day promotions, marketing and advertising for the athletic department.d A 2005 graduate of Coastal Carolina, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in recreation and sports management while also beingb a member of the Coastal Carolina Cheerleading squad for each of her four years. She was a two-time member of the Presidential HonorH Roll, as well as being named the Student of the Year in 2005 for recreation and sports management. During her undergraduate work, she also interned with a variety of organizations, working with CCU’s Marketing Communications Department,D Media Services Division and Office of Alumni Relations, as well as spending a semester as an intern at WPDE-TV. Moore lives in Conway.

BRYAN PAAR ASSISTANT EVENT OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR Bryan Paar enters his second year as Assistant Event Operations Supervisor at Coastal Carolina. However, Paar is a familiar face around Coastal Carolina athletics. In 2006-07, he was the Assistant Athletic Event Coordinator. Paar originally came to Coastal as an Event Operations Intern during Spring 2006. Prior to coming to Coastal Carolina, Paar attended State University of New York College at Cortland. While there, he worked with Cortland’s Athletic Department during the 2003-04 academic year. Among his responsibilities were assisting with ticket selling, ushering, maintenance, security, event set-up and take down, scorekeeping, stats and operating the PA and music systems for men’s basketball and women’s softball games. Paar graduated from Cortland in May 2006, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in sport management and minoring in economics and management. While at Cortland, Paar was a member of the Sport Management Club, serving as treasurer in 2005. He was also the marketing and promotions co- chair in 2004 for the Wingate Tournament, an annual event held in memory of Susan Wingate, who founded Cortland’s Sport Management program. Paar assisted with the planning and organization of the tournament and helped secure hole sponsorships and auction items. Paar resides in Conway. 90 2008 MEDIA GUIDE COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF VICKI PIRHER STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMIC ADVISOR Vicki Pirher is completing her first year as a student-athlete academic advisor at Coastal Carolina University. Pirher arrived at Coastal Carolina in early 2008 from Monmouth University, where she had served as an athletic academic advisor forfo two-and-a-half years. During that time, she also was a program advisor for the School of Education and freshman seminar professor. She obtained a pair of degrees at Monmouth, earning her bachelor’s in English with minors in psychology, gender studies and healthh studies in 2005. As an undergraduate, she was also part of the dance team for two years. She then followed that with her Master ofo Science degree in educational counseling in 2007. A native of New Jersey, Pirher graduated from South River High School in 2001. She resides in Surfside Beach.

JEFF POUNDSS ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC TRAINER Jeff Pounds is in his seventh year on the sports medicine staff at Coastal Carolina University, having been promoted to Associate AthleticA Trainer in 2006 after four years as an assistant. He has primary responsibility for the school’s football program. Pounds came to Coastal Carolina from Davidson College, where he served as an assistant athletic trainer and the head football athletica trainer from 1998-2002. Prior to that, he was a staff athletic trainer for Healthworks Rehab and Fitness in Morgantown, West Virginia anda the head athletic trainer at Fairmont (WV) Senior High School. A member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association, Pounds has extensive experi- encee in athletic training, working various camps, including for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. He also served as the host athletic trainer forf the 1999 and 2000 NCAA Men’s Soccer Final Fours in Charlotte, North Carolina. Originally from Petaluma, California, the 34-year-old Pounds earned his Master of Science degree from West Virginia University in 1998. Prior to that, he received his bachelor’s degree from Sacramento State University in 1996. During his collegiate career, he played two years of baseball at Santa Rosa (CA) Junior College. Pounds lives in Myrtle Beach.

PATRICK RANSDELL ASSISTANT A.D.-MAJOR GIFTS Patrick Ransdell is in his second year as Assistant Athletic Director for Major Gifts at Coastal Carolina University. Ransdell arrived at Coastal Carolina in 2007 from the University of Mississippi, where he was responsible for a donor base of more than 22,000 UMAA Foundation members in northern Mississippi and Tennessee. He also assisted with the fund raising efforts for an $18 million baseball eexpansion and renovation, where he coordinated efforts to sell 880 club seats that will generate more than $1 million in yearly revenue. During hhis tenure at Ole Miss, the UMAA Foundation saw increases in the annual fund by nine percent in 2005-06 and an increase in basketball revenue oof 18 percent. Prior to joining Ole Miss, Ransdell spent two years at Ohio University working as a graduate assistant and volunteering in the athletic developmentd office while earning his master’s in business administration and sports administration. He also spent the summer of 2004 intern- ing at Georgia Tech in the Alexander-Tharp Fund, assisting with donor relations and working extensively with the 1st and 10 Young Alumni Program. He also spent a year at Western Kentucky University in both athletic marketing and the Hilltopper Athletic Foundation, working in group sales for football and basketball. A native of Clemson, S.C., Ransdell received his bachelor’s degree in mass communication with a minor in psychology from Western Kentucky in 2002. While at WKU, he was a member of the Hilltopper baseball team for four years. Ransdell and his wife Brooke just celebrated the birth of their son Walker in June 2008.

KENT REICHERT ASSISTANT ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS DIRECTOR Kent Reichert is in his sixth year as the Assistant Athletic Media Relations Director at Coastal Carolina University, now with primary responsibility for women’s soccer, men’s basketball and baseball. Reichert joined the staff in 2003 from Kent State University, where he served as the Assistant Sports Information Director since November 2000. There, he served as the primary media contact for KSU’s nationally-ranked field hockey and men’s golf programs, as well as women’s basketball, and softball. He also assisted with game day duties for football and men’s basketball. Reichert earned his bachelor’s in public relations in 1999 and master’s in sports administration in 2001 from Kent State, during which time he served as a student assistant and graduate assistant in the sports information office. He was the media relations coordinator for the 2001 NCAA Field Hockey Championships and assisted the men’s basketball SID at the 2002 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament when the Golden Flashes made their run to the Elite Eight. He also worked as the official scorer for five years with the Akron Aeros, the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. Reichert resides in Myrtle Beach. 2008 MEDIA GUIDE 91 COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF MARK ROACH SENIOR ASSOCIATE ATHLETICS DIRECTOR Mark Roach is in his sixth year as the Senior Associate Athletics Director at Coastal Carolina University. Roach came to Coastal Carolina in May 2003 after serving as the Athletics Director for the for the previous ffivei years. He was named to that position after spending one year as the Athletics Director at Carolina Forest High School. Prior to that, the 47-year-old Roach served as the head baseball coach at Socastee High School for three years. He also was the hhead baseball coach at Sumter High School from 1986-94. There, he led his team to the Lower State finals in 1992 and the State Cham- ppionship game in 1993. He was named the South Carolina AAAA Coach of the Year in 1993, as his team was ranked sixth in the nation bby USA Today, while his final squad in 1994 opened the year ranked 19th in the country. Born in Duluth, Georgia, Roach earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Coastal Carolina in 1984, playing on the 1982-83 basketball and 1983 baseball squads. He later earned his master’s degree in sports administration from the U.S. Sports Academy in 1994. Before that, he graduated from Peachtree (GA) High School in 1978, where he played baseball, football and basketball. Roach and his wife, Mary Beth, reside in Conway with their son Brandon (19) and daughter Casey (17).

CARI ROSIEK EVENT OPERATIONS COORDINATOR Cari Rosiek is in her fifth year as the Athletics Event Operations Coordinator at Coastal Carolina University, but is very familiar with theth University. Rosiek was a four-year letterwinner for Jess Dannelly’s nationally-recognized softball program from 1996-99, starting every pos- ssible game of her career, a mark that reached 227. As a starter on the 1998 squad, she helped lead the Lady Chanticleers to the Big SSouth Conference Tournament title and the school’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. She currently ranks in the top-10 in four ssingle-season categories, including the top mark in sacrifice hits, and also ranks in eight career categories for the Lady Chanticleers. She ggraduated from Coastal Carolina in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. Prior to her return to Coastal Carolina in 2004, she was an operations manager for part of the Burroughs and Chapin Corporation for four years. There, she handled budgetary issues as well as supervising a 90-member staff for one of Burroughs and Chapin’s properties. Rosiek was married in 2006 to Jake Rosiek, the University’s Intramural Coordinator, and the couple resides in Conway with their infant son Caulin.

JJSENNIFER SPINDLER ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER Jennifer Spindler is in her fourth year as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Coastal Carolina University. Spindler arrived in the fall of 2005 after spending the previous two years as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at East Carolina University,U where she earned her master’s degree in sport management in May 2005. In her time there, she was responsible for the ,v men’s and women’s , men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s cross country teams. She also was responsiblere for various administrative roles, including student hour logs, budget/inventory database development and NCAA ISS injury trackingtr system. A member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Spindler got her start as a student at Grand Valley State University in Allendale,A Mich., working as an athletic training student for two years. While at Grand Valley, she worked with football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis and in the rehabilitation room. She graduated with her bachelor’s in movement science in December 2002. Among her other work, she was an assistant manager for the Gatorade Summer Camp at ECU, as well as being an approved clinical instructor and graduate teaching assistant in ECU’s Athletic Training Education Program. Spindler lives in Myrtle Beach.

SHARON THOMPSON NCAA FACULTY ATHLETIC REPRESENTATIVE Dr. Sharon Thompson is completing her first year as Faculty Athletic Representative at Coastal Carolina University. Thompson joined the Coastal Carolina University faculty as assistant professor in 1993 having earned an Educational Specialist degree iinn 1992 in the area of Educational Administration and an Educational Doctorate in 1993 in the area of Health Education Administration; bboth degrees conferred by the University of South Carolina. She is a professor and coordinator of the Health Promotion program at CCoastal Carolina. During her tenure at the University, Thompson has overseen the development, implementation and growth of the health promotionp major. Starting with only seven students in the major in 1997, the program has grown to more than 300 majors and minors underu her direction. Thompson has authored or coauthored numerous peer-reviewed articles in international, national and state journals on disordered eating and has presented at numerous national and local conferences. She has been the recipient of several awards, including the 2004 Coastal Carolina University Teacher-Scholar-Lecturer Award, The Sun News Volunteer of the Year Award 2002-2003, the Excellence in Community Nutrition Award by the Dannon Institute in 2003, the 1997 South Carolina Health Education Professional of the Year, the 1998 Coastal Carolina University Student Affairs Award, and in 1999 was named the Distinguished Teacher and Scholar for the Spadoni School of Education. 92 2008 MEDIA GUIDE COASTAL CAROLINA FOOTBALL ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STAFF SONYA WOODSO ASSISTANT STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH Sonya Woods is concluding her first year as the Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at Coastal Carolina University, working primarily with the volleyball, women’s tennis and women’s golf programs. Woods arrived at Coastal Carolina after serving as a sports performance specialist at Athletic Republic of Charlotte for six months. Prior to that, she was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Winthrop University for three years, working directly with 10 of the Eagles’ athletic programs and assisting with the remaining teams. She also worked for Winthrop as a graduate assistant with the women’s basketball program, working not only with the workout programs but also handling film exchange, student managers, practice schedules and other functions. Certified by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, Woods earned two degrees in her time at Winthrop, receiving her Bachelor of Science in sport management in December 2001 and following it up with her Master of Science in physical education in May 2007. Woods resides in Myrtle Beach.
