Kihikihi Polo Club added another chap- ter to their proud history winning two sections of the Savile Cup tournament in Rangitikei. Returning home as winners of the McKenzie Salver and Riddiford and Levin Cup went a long way to cushioning the disappointment of the Bayleys Kihikihi A team having to withdrawal from the tourna- ment at the 11th hour due to transport and pony issues. Bayleys Kihikihi B’s triumphant line-up of Lochie Watson, Paul Kay, Edward Kay and Michael Kay upset Rangitikei 5-4 first up in the Riddiford and Levin Cup competi- tion. Rangitikei, playing in front of a parochial 2014-2015 hometown crowd, were the tournament favourites. However, Jenny Kay reports that the NATIONAL loyal Kihikihi supporters, as always, were a formidable force with their pink and black colours featuring prominently on the side- FINALS line. Kihikihi then breezed past Hawke’s Bay 5-0 and Wanstead 6-2 in the semi-finals to cement a berth in the final against local foes Cambridge. The playoff went down to the wire with Kihikihi prevailing 3-2 courtesy of a match- winning goal to Paul Kay with time almost up. All four players produced some excellent polo, both individually and as a team. Bayleys Kihikihi C team of Famke Watson, Chloe Kay, Stephen Kay and James Burrow were clearly the standout side in the McKenzie Salver section easily winning all three of their games. They swept aside Wanstead 8-3 in round one, Waimai 10-5 in the semi-final and Birchleigh (South Island) 6-3 in the final. The girls (Watson and Chloe Kay) attacked from the front, while the men odeo (Stephen Kay and Burrow) kept the ball o o flowing forward. R Kihikihi have always had a fantastic RHosted By Waikatoato RodeoRodeo AAssociationssociation compliment of ponies, mainly home bred, and this tournament was no exception. Paul Kay’s pony ‘Jade’ won Champion Pony in his section. Of the 15 ponies that took the field for Kihikihi B, only one hadn’t been broken in and schooled by Paul. Three members of the Kihikihi C team SATURDAY each played a horse that had also come from the Paul Kay stable. A fine tribute to the Kay family for their magnificent line of ponies. FEB. 21, 2015 It is interesting to note that Kihikihi last won the Savile Cup at Rangitikei in 2008 with a team comprising Andrew Parrott, KIHIKIHIKIHIKKIHI DOMDDOMAIN,OOMMAIN,MMAINAIN, 11A111AM1AAMM Robert Watson, Barrat Watson and Hamish Ormond. They will go down in history as the club’s first side without a member of the Kay family to win the Savile Cup. Kaipaki again showed championship winning qualities sweeping aside Cam- bridge by seven wickets in Waikato Valley Champions Trophy cricket. Having dismissed the home team for 148 in 35 overs at the Cambridge Town Square, Kaipaki waltzed to 149/3 in 19 overs. Fraser Kilgour, with an unbeaten 65, and Brad Leon- ard, 44, guided them to victory. Kilgour batted courageously, struggling with tendinitis in his feet. His six to finish the game cleared the main pavilion - a massive hit in any game of cricket. Leonard will be particu- larly happy with his perform- ance, having been frustrated with a lack of batting time this TC190215FP23 season. FLASHBACK: Kaipaki batsman Fraser Kilgour was back in the runs on Saturday top scoring with Bowling Cambridge out for an unbeaten 65 against Cambridge.
