48: Cubs Recycling Night
Suitable for: Cubs
** Note not all councils recycle the same things, please tailor to your local situation **
1. Cubs fetch something from their kitchen recycling bin, or something that can be recycled.
- Chat about the different things they selected, talk about what each might be made into. Try to cover all categories (paper, plastic, aluminium, glass etc).
2. Make a 3D sculpture out of aluminium foil. While they're busy making, chat about aluminium and how efficiently it can be recycled compared to mined. How many cans do you think might make a roll of foil? When they're done, do a little show and tell, then straight into the recycling bin. (Note: could also do toilet paper roll craft here, but need more advance notice for this)
3. Talk about kitchen scraps. What can we do instead of put them in landfill? Does anyone have a compost heap? Anyone have a worm farm? Anyone keep chickens?
- Set them a challenge for the next week... collect all the kitchen peelings and recycle them in one of the following ways (we sent this further info to the parents afterwards)... a. Add to an existing compost heap, if you have one. Help to turn over the heap and/or spread compost on garden beds. b. Add to an existing worm farm, if you have one. Turn over and aerate some of the soil and/or spread worm castings on garden plants. c. Feed to the chooks, if you have any. Spread chook poo on the garden. d. Create a new compost heap or worm farm (only if you're feeling very motivated) e. Dig a hole in the garden near some plants that could do with extra fertiliser - bury the scraps with some dry or brown material, e.g. shredded paper or dead leaves, moisten it with a bit of water, then fill in the hole. Google "trench composting" for more info.

Expand this at a future meeting by asking all members to find an object of some sort, without telling them why. Then, start the story with the rule that they must include their object in their part of the story.
