India Tel : (91 22) 2216 3339 / 2218 6071 Website : artmusings.net 2 3 In the Colours of Particularity: meticulously rendered fruit in her paintings are symbolic of abundance; and the sheer materiality of the artist's light and colour, as though she were re-viewing the realm of nature Maïté Delteil: Paintings 2005-2007 through the stained-glass windows of a cathedral window, are symbolic of beatitude. The garden appears, in Delteil's paintings, as a stage set in a dream; she delivers this space, 'Flowering apple under cleared sky, at once public and private, through a play of scales and perspectives, phrased in variable leafing birches against the evening, shadows and sources of illumination. Anchored in this hortus, a setting calibrated green and rain fresh…. somewhere between the pastoral and the sylvan, are figures suggestive of classical statuary. And there, like an ark In Delteil's handling, Chirico meets Douanier Rousseau: we are offered a sense of security in the meadow sea of mist, here, as though we were revisiting scenes from childhood, and yet there is an aura of the barn floating mystery, a tinge of menace, to these paintings. a clouded red….' We come, finally, to the dreamer herself: one of the finest paintings in this exhibition portrays – Gunnar Ekelöf, 'To Remember' [1] a woman asleep, with the birds that are her dream images wandering on the coverlet, an image that dramatises the blurring of the line separating the routines of waking life from the phantasmagoric associations that the self makes as it travels across the territories of sleep.

    SAKTI BURMAN Born 1935, Kolkata Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata (1956) Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris Sakti Burman's characteristic imagery resembles weathered frescos. As he depicts his figures in hues that seem once vivid, and are now faded, he immortalizes his subjects. He transports his viewers into a dream- like world. Perspective and composition evoke medieval icons. Burman also uses a marbling effect, achieved by blending oils with acrylics, and applies the paint in a pointillist fashion. "Through my works I return to my native roots, to my childhood and that transitory world of innocence". Burman's mythical creatures tell ancient tales of courtly romances and enchanting worlds: comely maidens, children astride elephants, flutists, fruit laden trees, exotic flowers, birds and beasts. The artist lives and works in Paris.     MAïTÉ DELTEIL MAYA BURMAN 14.12.2016 - 19.12.2016 20.12.2016 - 10.02.2017 JEHANGIR ART GALLERY ART MUSINGS, MUMBAI THE ART OF MAÏTÉ DELTEIL & MAYA BURMAN The story of a familial lineage always elicits the image of a tree, broad in its trunk, with roots extending deep into the ground, displacing soil and earth as it grows. These are stories of patriarchal lines, linear codes often rigid in their telling. But how do we tell the other side, a story of the line of women, of the quiet matriarchal instructions from those who live their practice and pass it down? These teachings are revealed between bulb and flower, between flower and bulb. The image of the flower is not invoked here for its implications of femininity or fragility but indeed the opposite; its biological pervasiveness, its ability for lateral dispersal and cross-pollination. For mother and daughter Maïté Delteil and Maya Burman, painting forms a lineage, a bloodline, and inspiration originates from the inner lives of the artists. The resultant compositions are bound to personal histories and images from the unconscious, making for paintings replete with layered realities. Although both artists capture imagined spaces, plants or creatures in their works, the lines and edges are carefully made, as though they have been observed forensically, through a microscope. Living and working in France and India, both mother and daughter draw on the diverse aesthetics of these cultures. While it is almost impossible to unpack the different global influences that come together to make their works, one of the most impressive qualities of each artist is her assured use of color.

    Avid Learning x Art Musings Gallery present the third episode of the Beyond Contemporary Art Series – BCA#3 with a panel discussion on the dynamic and evolving landscape of identity politics and art For Immediate Release Identity as a construct is not a stable, constant, inherited social fact, but rather, is fluidly formed, varying with the imaginative and political agency of the individual – In relation to species, race, subjectivity, gender, ethnicity, geographical and cultural location. Contemporary identity, especially in Indian art is transitive and complex. New generations of Indian artists are interrogating the formation of identity through strategies such as co-creativity and personal histories, resistance to marginalisation, and practices that move beyond mythologizing and stereotypes. Many contemporary artists employ modes ranging from performativity to abstraction, to probe issues of selfhood in the context of culture and globalization, the role of participatory audiences in the creation of meaning, activism and aesthetics and the digital and the mediation of identity.     JAYASRI BURMAN Born 1960, Calcutta, India Burman studied at the Kala Bhavan in Shanti Niketan where she recieved her B.A. in Fine Art, and at the Government College of Art and Craft in Calcutta, where she completed her M.A. in painting. Following this, in 1984 she moved to Paris where she studied print-making under Monsieur Ceizerzi. Burman comes from an extended family of eminent artists. Along with her husband, Paresh Maity; her uncle Sakti Burman lives and works in France, though he is regarded as an Indian artist. Along with this is her cousin, Maya Burman. Burman, in 2005, helped create an exhibition entitled "The Family" featuring works by all these artists. The imagery in her work has a dream-like and lyrical quality with a unique sensitivity which, although inspired by the Indian folk element, retains a quality of refreshing candor and reflective honesty. She manages very successfully to weave the decorative and design element of the folk idiom into the intricate patterns of her canvas, without losing the natural charm and naiveté of her work, which is uniquely her own.
